Officials are celebrating a successful launch of a Japanese rocket. It's part of the United Arab Emirates mission to Mars. Scientists and researchers in the UAE hope it will shed new light on the red planet.

The Hope probe began its 7-month journey to Mars on Monday morning. It was carried into space by an "H2A" rocket from Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan.

The explorer is about 8 meters wide and weighs roughly 1.5 tons. The UAE plans to put it into Mars' orbit in 2021, when the country celebrates 50 years since its founding.

One of the missions' goals is to help reduce the country's dependence on oil and transition to a knowledge-based economy.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries conducted the launch. It is the fourth time the Japanese company has used the H2A vehicle to launch a foreign satellite into space.

Monday's launch was originally scheduled for last week, but was postponed due to bad weather.

Japan's health ministry has expanded the criteria for people eligible to undergo coronavirus testing using public funds.

People deemed at high risk of contracting the virus at their workplaces or residential neighborhoods can now take such tests.

Previously, among those who had no suspected coronavirus symptoms, publicly financed tests were only available for people recognized as having come into close contact with infected ones.

People who take such tests are usually asked to refrain from outings for 14 days, even if they test negative. But this will not apply to those who have become newly eligible to be tested using public money.

The health ministry hopes the new arrangement will further encourage more groups of people to undergo testing.

Health officials in Tokyo have been testing staff at establishments such as night clubs to prevent the spread of the virus from cluster infections detected in some of those places.

But people wanting to be tested to partake in social, economic, or cultural activities have to bear the costs themselves.

Included in these categories are professional sports athletes and company workers planning to take business trips abroad.

Officials of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 188 cases of coronavirus infection on Sunday.

This is the first time in four days that the number of new cases in the capital has fallen below 200.

The total number of confirmed cases in Tokyo now stands at 9,411.

Beijing will lower its coronavirus alert level after the Chinese capital saw no new cases for nearly two weeks.

City authorities said on Sunday that the level will be lowered to the third-highest degree on the four-tier scale from Monday.

They say 335 cases were confirmed between June 11 and Saturday, but there have been none in the last 13 days.

The alert level was raised to the second-highest degree in June 16 after a number of cases were found among people who visited a large food wholesale market.

Officials say lowering the level means that gatherings involving 500 people can be held on the condition that anti-infection measures are in place.
They also say exhibitions, sports events and cinemas will be gradually restarted or reopened.

But Chinese public health authorities are wary of a resurgence of infections after 30 cases were found in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region over the three days until Saturday.

European Union countries are wrangling over a massive fund to help the economy recover from the coronavirus pandemic. After talks unexpectedly dragged into a third day, politicians are still divided over the size of the package and how to distribute it.

The initial plan was for a fund of 750 billion euros, or around 860 billion dollars. Two-thirds of that would be given as free grants, with the rest distributed as repayable loans.

France and Germany led this proposal with support from Italy, where the infection spread widely.

But the Netherlands and some other northern European countries are against it. They want a smaller fund and to reduce the proportion given through grants.

European Council President Charles Michel hoped for a breakthrough by meeting separately with the nations opposed to the original plan. But there's been no agreement and the debate continues.

US President Donald Trump said in a television interview aired on Sunday that he does not believe in a national mandate forcing people to wear face masks.

Trump told Fox News Sunday that he does not agree with the statement that if everybody wears a mask, everything disappears.

The president said he believes masks are effective but will leave the decision to mandate them up to state governors.

He was asked about Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease specialist on the White House's coronavirus task force. Trump said that Fauci made a few mistakes, such as advising him not to wear a mask and "not to ban China."

But Trump added that he has a very good relationship with Fauci.

On the association of slavery with the Confederate flag that is being banned at an increasing number of places, the president was critical of the movement.

He said that the flag is not a symbol of racism but represents the South and is a matter of freedom of speech.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has warned that the island will face intensifying pressure from China.

Tsai gave a speech on Sunday at the convention of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. She was returned as party leader after winning a second term as president in a January election.

She said Taiwan had overcome the coronavirus crisis with its democratic system, but will continue to face challenges from abroad in the next few years.

She added that freedom and human rights are under serious threat in Hong Kong.

Tsai said the Democratic Progressive Party has a responsibility to defend freedom, democracy and human rights, and must not yield to authoritarianism or intimidation.

An opinion poll conducted by a local broadcaster in May showed that 52 percent of respondents were satisfied with Tsai's China policy, the highest rating in three years.

Voters in Syria cast their ballots in a parliamentary election on Sunday. But the poll provoked an outcry from opposition forces and close scrutiny from the international community.

The election came due to the expiration of the term of office for the current members of parliament. The country's state-run news agency said authorities have set up polling stations in all provinces.

Prime Minister Hussein Arnous said, "Today is a political victory that is added to the military victories." He also said the election will lead to genuine democracy.

President Bashar al-Assad's ruling party is expected to win the election by a landslide as most candidates are supporters of his government.

Furthermore, only residents in government-controlled areas could vote. Neither people in opposition-held areas nor those who fled overseas as refugees are believed to have been able to vote.

The Syrian National Coalition, a main opposition alliance, said the poll was a "theatrical election by the Assad regime" as the number of refugees from the nation and the internally displaced totals 13 million.

In the Syrian civil war, Assad's government forces are now in control of much of the country after recapturing wide portions of opposition territory. On the other hand, opposition forces have been cornered in a northwestern area.

Iran's state-run media says authorities have suspended the execution of three anti-government protesters to give a court a chance to review their case.

The media broke the news on Sunday, the same day that one of the lawyers for the three men also tweeted that a court accepted their request for a review of the case.

Judicial authorities said on Tuesday that the three were sentenced to death for setting fire to banks and other buildings during demonstrations last November. The nationwide protests erupted after the government hiked gasoline prices.

The announcement sparked protest rallies and numerous online calls for a halt to their execution.

It is rare for Iran's judiciary to review a decision. Analysts say authorities may have sought to allay the public backlash at a time when inflation has been spiking due to US economic sanctions.

Japan's three leading mobile phone carriers have launched a messaging service to help foreign visitors stranded in the country during a natural disaster to ride out the emergency.

NTT Docomo, KDDI and SoftBank provide text messages to travelers on international roaming services to tell them where they can find vital information.

The texting service -- in three languages -- was used during the torrential rains that caused floods and landslides in parts of Japan this month.

The text will be automatically delivered in English, Korean and traditional and simplified Chinese, based on visitors' home mobile carriers.

The message gives the phone number of a multilingual call center at the Japan National Tourism Organization, and information on free Wi-Fi hotspots.

It also has a link to the website of NHK World-Japan, which provides news in multiple languages.

Japanese beverage firm DyDo Drinco is testing vending machines that use facial recognition technology developed by electronics company NEC.

To make a purchase, customers have their face scanned and enter a passcode. They must have their facial image and a credit card registered first.

DyDo Drinco wants to roll out the machines in the next fiscal year if the trial goes well.

Their main targets are offices, as well as places like factories where workers often don't carry wallets or smartphones. Beaches are another possible venue.
