The Japanese government is expected to expand its state of emergency on Wednesday in an effort to counter a steep rise in coronavirus infections.

The declaration currently covers Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures. It went into effect last Friday and will remain in place until February 7.

The government is likely to include seven more prefectures in the measure -- Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Aichi, Gifu, Fukuoka, and Tochigi. The duration of the declaration for those prefectures is expected to be the same as the one in effect now.

The government is planning to listen to experts' opinions at an advisory panel meeting on Wednesday afternoon before finalizing its plan.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide is expected to hold a news conference later in the day to explain the reasons for the expansion and ask for cooperation.

The state of emergency measure includes shortening business hours at restaurants and bars to 8 p.m., asking people to refrain from non-essential outings, and reducing the number of commuters by 70 percent by promoting telework. Attendance at various events will also be limited.

Indonesia has authorized the emergency use of a coronavirus vaccine being developed by Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech.

Indonesia's National Agency for Drug and Food Control said on Monday that the vaccine had an efficacy rate of 65.3 percent in tests in the country, meeting WHO requirements.

Agency officials say they have examined data from ongoing clinical tests in Indonesia, as well as data from similar tests in Brazil and Turkey.

They say large-scale inoculations are scheduled to start later this week, prioritizing healthcare workers. They say they will closely watch for any side-effects, or other problems.

President Joko Widodo is expected to be the first person to be vaccinated, to demonstrate its reported safety.

An Islamic organization in the predominantly Muslim country has given the vaccine halal certification, ensuring that it adheres to the religion's rules.

Sinovac's vaccine has yet to gain official approval in China, but 3 million doses arrived in Indonesia last month.

Indonesia has the largest number of coronavirus cases and deaths in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia's King has declared a nationwide state of emergency to deal with the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Royal Palace said in a statement on Tuesday that the COVID-19 situation in the country is at a very critical level, and stressed the need for the declaration.

In a televised address on Tuesday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the emergency will last until August 1 -- or earlier if the situation can be brought under control.

The decree came just a day after Malaysia announced new travel restrictions for six states for a period of two weeks, starting Wednesday.

The prime minister also said that under the emergency decree, there will be no elections or sessions of parliament or state assemblies.

But he emphasized that the country will continue doing business as usual.
He said there will be no curfew but that the period of emergency will give Malaysia much needed calm and stability to focus on economic recovery and regeneration.

Malaysia has been experiencing a spike in cases since a third wave of infections began to sweep across the country in September. The number of daily infections reached a record of over 3,000 last week.

The country now has a total of more than 138,000 cases and over 550 deaths.
