The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has confirmed 1,592 new cases of the coronavirus as of 3 p.m. on Sunday in the Japanese capital.

The figure is the highest for a Sunday, surpassing the 1,494 cases reported a week ago.

The number of new cases has exceeded 1,000 for five days in a row.

The total number of people who have tested positive in Tokyo now stands at 85,470.

Japan's health ministry plans to expand antigen tests for coronavirus to people with no symptoms.

Antigen tests are simpler and faster than conventional PCR tests. Currently they are limited to those with symptoms as they are said to be less accurate than the PCR tests.

The ministry says researchers in Japan have found that there is no significant difference in the level of accuracy of test results between the two methods as long as there is sufficient virus present.

The ministry has now decided to conduct antigen tests at medical institutions and care homes on staff, patients and elderly residents. If a test result is positive, a PCR test will be conducted to confirm it.

Ministry officials say that conducting mass testing regularly at such facilities will help find carriers early and prevent cluster infections.

Japan's health ministry plans to establish a system to effectively track foreign nationals who tested positive for coronavirus after entering the country.

The authorities currently register the names and nationalities of foreigners entering Japan at quarantine stations.

But the database is separate from the nationwide system called HER-SYS, which was launched last May to grasp the country's coronavirus situation in real time.

The ministry is now working to link the two data systems using the passport numbers of travelers so that health authorities across the country can share the information swiftly.

Officials plan to connect the two systems later this month.

Forty-seven tennis players who arrived on Friday in Melbourne for the Australian Open have been placed under stricter COVID-19 restrictions after other people on their flights tested positive for the virus.

Some of the players are complaining that they are not able to go out and practice during their two-week quarantine in hotels.

The annual Grand Slam tennis event in Australia was originally scheduled to start this month. But the opening was postponed to February 8 due to the pandemic. Players and officials have been arriving on chartered flights.

Tournament organizers say three people on chartered flights from the United States and the United Arab Emirates were confirmed as infected with the coronavirus.

The organizers imposed a strict two-week hotel quarantine without practice outside on 47 players, including Japan's Nishikori Kei.

Players who have arrived on other flights are allowed to attend up to five hours of outside practice a day, even during their quarantine periods.

Swiss player Belinda Bencic tweeted that this amounts to unequal practice conditions before quite important tournaments.

Serbia has received one million doses of a coronavirus vaccine developed by a Chinese firm. It's the first European country to obtain the Chinese-made vaccine.

A chartered aircraft carrying the drug made by Sinopharm arrived on Saturday at an airport in the capital, Belgrade.

President Aleksandar Vucic welcomed the shipments at the airport. He expressed gratitude to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese leadership.

The country has already rolled out inoculations of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine and Russia's Sputnik V vaccine.

Vaccinations with the Chinese drug are expected to start as early as Sunday, after being approved by Serbian authorities.

China has deepened its ties with Serbia through its "Belt and Road" initiative and the so-called "mask diplomacy," in which Beijing sent a large amount of medical supplies to the Balkan nation.

Hungary, which has close economic ties with China, is also making arrangements to receive the Sinopharm vaccine.

People in western Japan are marking the 26th anniversary of a major earthquake that left widespread destruction and 6,434 people dead.

The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake on January 17, 1995, damaged more than 600,000 homes and caused widespread fires.

In the worst affected city of Kobe, people gathered at a park to remember the victims at 5:46 a.m.--- the exact moment the magnitude 7.3 quake hit.

Lanterns have been arranged in the park to read "1.17" and the Japanese word "Ganbarou," meaning "Don't give up."

The word was chosen to encourage people to overcome difficulties together as anxiety hangs over much of the population amid the coronavirus pandemic.

This year, the lanterns were lit a half day earlier to avoid crowding as part of infection prevention measures.

Memorial events for the disaster are scheduled to be held in many places on Sunday. But a survey by a local civic group shows that the number of planned events is 42 -- 30 percent less than last year due to the pandemic.

Handing down memories and lessons from the earthquake to future generations is becoming a major issue as an increasing number of people have no first-hand knowledge of the disaster.

Sunday marks 30 years since US-led international coalition forces launched a military campaign against Iraq.

The Gulf War operations were carried out in 1991 in response to the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq under then President Saddam Hussein.

The coalition forces overwhelmed Iraq with advanced weaponry such as cruise missiles and liberated Kuwait.

Videos of missiles hitting targets in real time became stark symbols of the war at that time.

Following the war, Iraq faced economic sanctions and payment of 52.4 billion dollars in reparations to Kuwait.
Iraq is still paying damages from its oil revenues.
Iraq and the United States continued to be at odds and the Hussein administration collapsed during the 2003 Iraq War.

The country has remained unstable with religious sectarian conflicts and the rise of the Islamic State militant group.

Iraq's long-time rival Iran has been increasing its influence, and confrontation between Iran and the United States over Iraq has been intensifying.

The power balance in the Middle East has changed dramatically during the past three decades.

Sarmad Al Bayatti, a security and strategic expert at an Iraqi think tank, said that Iraq used to be called the last bulwark against Iran. He added that it is not playing that role anymore, instead it is closely tied to Iran now.
Bayatti said that as Arab countries lost the protective wall against Iran, Saudi Arabia appears to be ready to fill the role Iraq once played.

Key words : Britain announced

Britain has announced a plan to hold an in-person G7 summit meeting in June in a seaside village in Cornwall, southwestern England.

Britain, the G7's current president, will host the meeting from June 11 to 13 in Carbis Bay.

The meeting is going to bring together leaders of seven industrialized nations face to face for the first time in about two years. The United States, which was last year's G7 host, did not hold an in-person meeting due to the coronavirus pandemic.

US President-elect Joe Biden will be participating in the annual summit for the first time after his inauguration.

Britain has invited Australia, India, and South Korea with the aim of using the occasion to boost cooperation among democracies.

The leaders are scheduled to discuss their countries' common challenges, such as the pandemic and climate change.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement that it is only right that the world leaders approach the challenge of building back better by uniting with a spirit of openness to create a better future.
