A senior official of Myanmar's National League for Democracy party has expressed resolve to confront the military by joining hands with likeminded members of the public.

In an online interview with NHK on Tuesday, lawmaker Phyu Phyu Thin said she and other senior party officials have continued to defy the military and police by changing protest hubs every day.

Myanmar's ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been detained since a military coup on February 1. Her detention is likely to be prolonged as she faces two charges.

Phyu Phyu Thin said she and her colleagues are encouraged by the many members of the public who are taking part in protests.

She called the movement Myanmar's last fight for democracy.

She also disclosed she has formed a new group mainly comprising lawmakers who were voted into office in the general election held last November.

She said she is calling on the international community to back a government made up of lawmakers chosen by members of the public, rather than a military government. She added she is seeking the support of the United Nations, Western embassies and others.

Coronavirus vaccinations are underway in Japan. About 40,000 healthcare workers will receive the jab in the first phase of the rollout.

The director at Tokyo Medical Center was the first person in the country to receive the shot. Araki Kazuhiro said, "I think the vaccine is the trump card in the coronavirus pandemic. If data from our shots is analyzed and used by public health officials, I would be very grateful."

About 800 staff members of the hospital will be inoculated in the initial round.

After the shots, the recipients will be monitored for 15 minutes. There have been no reports of any severe reactions so far.

The head nurse at Tokyo Medical Center said, "I think it will be great if I can work without feeling anxious for myself, or for society, so I am relieved that I'm vaccinated and can be part of this first step."

Healthcare workers at 100 hospitals across Japan are receiving Pfizer's vaccine.

The government will analyze data from the first 20,000 recipients to check for side effects.

The inoculations will eventually be expanded to about 3.7 million medical workers and then to elderly people.

President of Japan Medical Association, Nakagawa Toshio, said, "We should bring down the number of new infections as much as possible before the nationwide vaccination rollout. That will pave the way for getting the virus under control."

Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Mimura Akio welcomes the development. He says, "We are very much hopeful that we will be able to increase economic activities while preventing the spread of infection.

But a member of the government's expert panel is warning against being too hasty, because that may lead to unexpected problems or accidents.

Director General of Kawasaki City Institute for Public Health, Okabe Nobuhiko, said, "Speed and safety are equally important. We must try to have as many people as possible safely inoculated."

Health authorities across Japan reported more than 1,400 new coronavirus infections on Wednesday, with 79 deaths. Six-hundred seven people are currently in serious condition.

Japanese officials have released data that show the impact of coronavirus pandemic led to sharp declines in spending by domestic travelers during 2020.

The Japan Tourism Agency estimates that these consumers spent nearly 9.9 trillion yen, or about 93 billion dollars, at shops, hotels and restaurants. That's down 54.9 percent from 2019.

The decline was especially steep in the April-to-June quarter, when the government declared its first state of emergency, which called on residents to stay at home. Spending in the quarter plunged 83.2 percent from the previous year.

The agency is considering ways of helping out tourism-related businesses. Proposed measures include subsidizing their infection-control expenses.

Toyota Motor is halting a chunk of its production in Japan, after a strong earthquake last weekend delayed the supply of parts.

The car giant is starting to suspend 14 production lines at nine plants around the country from Wednesday.
Closures will last up to four days.

The factories usually churn out everything from sport utility vehicles to hybrids.

Company officials noted the quake had not hit supply of semiconductors. That comes as the industry grapples with a worldwide shortage of the chips.

Officials at one of Japan's major oil refiners say they are preparing to manufacture and sell an electric vehicle.

Idemitsu Kosan has been working with racing-car maker Tajima Motor to develop the compact EV. It seats four people.

The company plans to sell the car through its roughly 6,400 gas stations across the country from next year.

The target price is about 14,000 dollars, although the officials say it might go for even less.

The vehicle represents Idemitsu's efforts to diversify, while society tries to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

Idemitsu Kosan CEO, Kito Shunichi, said "Our company will continue to pursue its corporate mission of providing stable energy resources, but also develop new areas for its future business."

Idemitsu aims to continue developing its EV business as demand for gasoline is expected to decline in the future.

North Korean state media have reported the first public appearance in over a year of the wife of the country's leader Kim Jong Un.

The ruling Workers' Party newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, reported on Wednesday that Ri Sol Ju watched a performance with her husband on Tuesday.

Photos show the couple sitting next to each other, clapping and smiling.

North Korean media had not reported on Ri's activities since January last year.

South Korean intelligence agency officials say Ri appeared to be staying away from public view over coronavirus concerns.

Testifying before a parliament committee on Tuesday, officials of the National Intelligence Service said no unusual signs had been detected in North Korea.

The NIS revealed the North has built large-scale disinfection facilities at major customs points to prevent the coronavirus from entering the country along with imported goods.
