Japan will subject three more countries near India to tighter entry measures, due to the spread of a coronavirus variant that was first detected in India.

The government announced on Tuesday that people coming from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Maldives will have to stay at government-designated accommodations for the first six days of the two-week self-isolation period upon arrival.

Tokyo has already taken the same measures for arrivals from India, Pakistan and Nepal.

Taiwan is seeking to accelerate inoculations of coronavirus vaccines amid a recent surge in cases.

Officials reported 240 new cases on Tuesday, not including arrivals from abroad. Two fatalities were confirmed, bringing the total death toll to 14.

The authorities suspended face-to-face classes at all schools. Taiwan is also banning the entry of foreigners without a resident certificate in principle from Wednesday.

So far, 220,000 people, or only 0.9 percent of the population, have received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine.

The authorities say they have effectively procured about 20 million doses. But so far only about 300,000 doses have arrived.

President Tsai Ing-wen on Tuesday called on people not to worry, saying that vaccines procured abroad through various routes will arrive in batches.

She also said her government hopes the first vaccine to be developed in Taiwan will be made available by the end of July.

In the latest development on controversial changes proposed for Japan's immigration laws, the main ruling party says it intends to postpone any further debate on the bill until after the current session.

The issue of lengthy detentions became a political flashpoint as concern mounted over a Sri Lankan woman who became ill at an immigration facility in Nagoya and died.

Wishma Sandamali's family is in Japan calling on the government to provide more information about her death.

Members of opposition parties took up their cause. They were planning to block a vote on the bill in the Lower House Judicial Affairs Committee unless footage of the woman at the facility is shown to the bereaved family.

Members of the bloc decided on the move early Tuesday before the Liberal Democratic Party informed members of their decision.

Constitutional Democratic Party Diet Affairs Committee Chairperson Azumi Jun said, "I think that the Diet has effectively given up on enacting the bill."

While discussing the postponement of the debate to journalists on Tuesday, LDP Diet Affairs Committee Chairperson Moriyama Hiroshi said the tragedy in Nagoya requires further investigation into what really happened.

The draft revisions have also sparked considerable backlash from civil rights groups, who said the revisions would worsen the situation for asylum seekers.
