Palestinians on Saturday commemorated what they call the "Nakba," or the Palestinian Catastrophe, amid Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip.

Seventy-three years ago, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced following the founding of Israel.

On Saturday, Palestinians clashed with Israeli security forces in West Bank cities, including Ramallah, causing injuries.

The Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas, which effectively controls the Gaza Strip, fired several tens of rockets toward Israel's largest commercial city, Tel Aviv, and its surrounding areas.

Some rockets landed on commercial facilities and residential areas, killing one person. The group said the attack was in retaliation for airstrikes earlier in the day.

In response, Israel bombarded multiple targets, including a building that houses foreign media outlets, saying it had served as a base of Hamas.

The death toll in Gaza has climbed to 145, including children. Nine people have been killed in Israel.

The Israeli military is considering a possible ground operation in Gaza in response to rocket attacks from the territory.

Israel destroyed a building in the Gaza Strip housing the offices of the foreign media, including the Associated Press and the Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera, on Saturday.

The AP released a memo by a reporter who was in the building immediately before it collapsed.

According to the memo, the reporter was taking a nap before a night shift when he was awoken at 1:55 p.m. local time by a colleague wearing a helmet who came in shouting to evacuate.

The Israeli authorities had warned of the airstrike, urging the building's owner to evacuate those inside.

The reporter said in the memo that he was upset to be told he had only 10 minutes to escape. He grabbed his laptop, some electronic equipment and family photos before putting on a helmet and leaving the building around 2 p.m.

Israeli drones and F-16 fighters attacked the building soon afterward, bringing it crashing down.

The AP had used the building since 2006. The reporter from Gaza was living in it.

The AP says all 12 people working in the building escaped, and no one was injured.

AP President and CEO Gary Pruitt strongly condemned the attack, saying in a statement: "The world will know less about what is happening in Gaza because of what happened today."

He disputed Israel's assertion that the building was used by the Islamist militant group Hamas: "We have had no indication Hamas was in the building or active in the building."

With 100 days to go before the Tokyo Paralympics, organizers are making preparations to lower the risk of coronavirus infection during the Games.

The Tokyo Paralympics will open on August 24. Up to 4,400 athletes from as many as 180 countries and territories are scheduled to take part.

More than 80 athletes in Japan have qualified for the Games, and about 70 percent of athletes worldwide have so far secured their berths.

The organizers have been refining anti-virus measures through test events, as some para-athletes have a higher risk of developing severe symptoms once infected.

However, medical experts and others have expressed concern about athletes coming from across the world as Japan is seeing a continued surge in coronavirus infections. They also cited the possible impact of the Games on the country's health care system.

An NHK poll this month asked how the Olympic and Paralympic Games should be held.

Two percent of the respondents said they should take place in the way past Games did. Nineteen percent called for a limit on spectator numbers.

Twenty-three percent supported the idea of holding the Games without spectators while 49 percent said the events should be canceled.

There has also been criticism online of athletes being provided with vaccines, while businesses are asked to shorten hours or close due to the pandemic.

The Tokyo organizing committee and the International Paralympic Committee are being tested as to whether they can set out clear steps to ensure the Games' safety, explain its possible impact on the healthcare system, and gain public support.

Greece and Italy are opening up to holiday makers who are vaccinated, exempting them from the quarantine requirement.

Greece on Friday lifted the 10-day post-entry quarantine for visitors from 53 countries, including EU members, Britain and the United States. They, however, need to present a vaccination certificate or a negative PCR test result.

Milos, one of the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, welcomed a ferry which carried foreign holiday makers on Saturday.

A German man who came with his family said that he made a reservation two months ago and was looking forward to the trip.

He added that opening up to tourists is great and he and his family are happy to be there.

A municipal leader of Milos said more than half of the residents' livelihood is dependent on tourism and they were longing for the reopening.

Italy plans to accept vaccinated tourists from the EU, the US, Japan and other countries beginning Sunday.

European countries are accelerating their inoculation effort as reopening of tourism could trigger another surge of COVID-19 infection.

A Japanese journalist who was released from detention in Myanmar has given a description of interrogation by the country's military.

Kitazumi Yuki was taken away by Myanmar's security police in April while covering a demonstration against the military in Yangon. He was indicted for spreading false information and other charges.

He was freed from prison on Friday, for the first time in about a month, and arrived in Japan.

On Saturday, he gave an online interview to NHK.

Kitazumi said the military authorities persistently questioned him about the names of people whom he worked with, and of his clients.

He noted that when he told them their descriptions of events were false, they tried to force him to admit they were true. He also found that his clear denials had been altered in the military's case report.

He said the authorities didn't correct those descriptions, saying it is of no use in doing so unless he cooperates with their investigation.

Kitazumi noted the authorities didn't inflict violence on him as he was a foreigner. But he said many of the local political detainees with whom he talked in prison were hit with clubs, or interrogated for long periods of time while being blindfolded.

He said he was able to come out of prison with the help of many people, but there still are more than 3,000 political prisoners.

He added he will disseminate information about the matter in the hope of seeing all of them freed.

A Japanese journalist who was detained in Myanmar has been released and returned to Japan.

Myanmar's state-run media reported the move was in consideration of future bilateral ties.

Kitazumi Yuki arrived at Narita airport near Tokyo on Friday evening.

He thanked the people who have worked for his release, adding that he regrets he had to leave Myanmar because he wanted to keep reporting from the country.

He said in English, "I continue to tell the situation in Myanmar to the people in Japan and other countries."

Kitazumi had been based in Myanmar since 2014.
He was arrested nearly a month ago after covering demonstrations against the military.

He was indicted on charges of fueling anxiety among citizens and spreading false information.

The governing Liberal Democratic Party is to launch a Diet group to develop a mid to long-term strategy for strengthening Japan's semiconductor industry.

Semiconductors are in high demand worldwide, but Japanese companies that used to be global leaders are lagging behind their US and Taiwanese counterparts.

The new group is scheduled to hold its first meeting on May 21.

The members will put together proposals on cooperating with the US and other friendly nations on semiconductor production. They will also tackle the issue of how to improve the sectors where Japan still has a competitive edge, such as equipment for manufacturing semiconductors.

The chairperson of the LDP's tax system research commission, Amari Akira, is tapped to head the new group. Deputy Prime Minister Aso Taro and former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo are likely to be top advisers.

Amari told reporters that the country that controls the semiconductor industry controls the world. He added that the sector is an important foundation of Japan's economic security and it needs to be urgently rebuilt.

Japan's transport ministry is set to study ways to make it easier for people to commute to work by bicycle. They include financial assistance for companies which build a parking space for bike commuters.

The ministry has come up with a draft plan through fiscal 2025 to promote the use of bicycles in commuting. It is part of the ministry's effort to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, revitalize regional economies through tourism and promote the health of workers.

Under the plan, the ministry aims to increase the use of bicycle in commuting to 18.2 percent of all means of transport in fiscal 2025, compared with 15.2 percent in fiscal 2015.

Officials will look into budgetary and tax measures, including assistance for companies to build a bicycle parking space.

The plan also includes promoting bicycle tourism as well as designating a "national cycle route" in an effort to boost regional economies.

The ministry plans to draw up the plan by late May.
