It's been a week since the third state of emergency came into effect in Japan in four prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka. Far fewer people are out in downtown areas of Osaka than usual during the spring holiday period.

Osaka officials reported 1,057 new cases on Sunday. It is the sixth day in a row that the number has topped 1,000.

Dotonbori district is usually crowded with tourists during the long holiday period and some shops are open.

But bars and restaurants are not serving alcohol. Operating hours have also been shortened in line with the request of the prefectural government.

Pub owner Okada Keiji says sales are about a tenth of what they usually are during the period.

He says, "The spring holiday period is the best time for us to earn money. It's such a pity."

In Tokyo, 879 people have been confirmed to be infected with the virus on Sunday.

It is the first time in more than three months that the number has topped 800 on a Sunday.

North Korea says US President Joe Biden made a "big blunder" by calling Pyongyang's nuclear program a serious threat to American and global security.

The chief of the North Korean Foreign Ministry's US affairs department, Kwon Jong Gun, made the remarks in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Sunday.

This comes after Biden presented his foreign policy towards North Korea in his Congressional address last week.

The statement says the US has been posing a nuclear threat to North Korea. It says the US calling the North's deterrence for self-defense a threat is an encroachment upon its right to self-defense.

The official said now that the keynote of the new US policy on the North has become clear, his country will be compelled to push for corresponding measures. He warned that the US will find itself in a serious situation.

North Korea also reacted to US State Department spokesperson Ned Price's accusation that Pyongyang is taking increasingly draconian measures to tighten control of its people under the guise of fighting COVID-19, including shoot-to-kill orders at the border with China.

A North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement that the accusation is a violation of the country's state sovereignty. The statement says that insulting the dignity of the "supreme leadership" is a sign that the US is preparing for an all-out showdown with the North. It warns that the US will surely regret such an action.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister has criticized the South Korean government for failing to stop defectors from flying anti-Pyongyang leaflets to the North recently.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Kim Yo Jong called the action by defectors a provocation against the North.

She also accused South Korean authorities of not stopping what she called the reckless acts.

She warned that Pyongyang can no longer remain an onlooker and will look into corresponding action against what it regards as a serious provocation.

Kim Yo Jong added that the responsibility for the consequences will entirely rest with the South Korean authorities.
A defectors' group in South Korea flew 500,000 leaflets criticizing Kim Jong Un toward the North via balloons in late April.

After defectors lofted similar leaflets in May last year, Pyongyang blew up an inter-Korean liaison office in the border city of Kaesong.

Four astronauts, including Japan's Noguchi Soichi, have returned to Earth on board the SpaceX Crew Dragon, after spending more than 150 days at the International Space Station.

The capsule entered the Earth's atmosphere shortly after 2:40 a.m. US Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday.

The craft deployed parachutes to slow its descent and splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida coast at around 2:57 a.m.

The capsule was retrieved by a recovery ship that had been on standby. The astronauts came out of the hatch one by one, being supported by crew members.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, says all the four astronauts are safe.

The four astronauts on board the spacecraft arrived at the ISS last November. Their return means the end of the Crew-1 mission -- the first operational crewed flight using a spacecraft developed by a private firm.

This was Noguchi's third spaceflight. He ventured outside the ISS to install modification kits for mounting solar arrays and conducted experiments to cultivate iPS cells and grow plants in zero gravity.

Four astronauts, including Japan's Noguchi Soichi, are expected to return to Earth on Sunday after spending more than 150 days at the International Space Station.

The four astronauts on the Crew-1 mission arrived at the ISS aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon last November.

During the five-and-a-half month period, Noguchi conducted various scientific experiments and completed a fourth spacewalk outside the station.

Another Japanese astronaut, Hoshide Akihiko, and three other crew members arrived at the ISS on April 24, Japan time. As a result, two Japanese astronauts were on the ISS for the first time since 2010.

Noguchi has spent a total of 344 days in space. The current record by a Japanese astronaut is the 347 days set by Wakata Koichi.

NASA says Noguchi and the three other astronauts will leave the ISS at around 8:30 p.m. US Eastern Daylight Time Saturday on board the Crew Dragon.

The spacecraft is scheduled to splash down in waters off the coast of Florida at around 3 a.m. Sunday after it gradually descends and re-enters the Earth's atmosphere.

Top officers from Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the US military have agreed to stand firm against any attempts to change the status quo in the East China Sea.

The Chief of Staff of Japan's SDF, General Yamazaki Koji, talked with the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, in Hawaii on Friday. They were there to attend a change of command ceremony for the US Indo-Pacific Command.

Japanese Defense Ministry says Yamazaki and Milley discussed the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, where China is increasing its presence.

The ministry says they reaffirmed the United States' unwavering commitment to Japan's defense under the Japan-US Security Treaty, including defense of the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Japan controls the islands. China and Taiwan claim them.

The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.

Chinese government ships have repeatedly entered Japan's territorial waters around the islands.

Yamazaki, Milley and their South Korean counterpart agreed on Thursday to work closely to deal with North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

NHK has learned that a quarter of the foreigners granted refugee status in 2020 in Japan were Chinese.

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan says eleven Chinese received refugee status last year out of the total 47.

That was the highest figure since Japan began accepting refugees in 1982.

China has been increasingly criticized for its treatment of ethnic minorities, including the Uyghur people in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The international community alleges that China is committing human rights abuses.

The greater number of Chinese who were granted refugee status in Japan could well be linked to the situation.

Japan grants refugee status, in accordance with the UN refugee convention, to those people who are likely to be persecuted in their own country for such reasons as ethnicity, religion, and politics.

Currently, Japan's Diet is deliberating a revision to the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act as it was pointed out that the criteria for granting refugee status in Japan are stricter than those in the US and European countries.

Although some people are allowed to stay in Japan on humanitarian grounds even though they were not recognized as refugees, the planned revision is to give clear legal criteria for those who do not fully merit refugee status.

Strong winds have battered the city of Makinohara in central Japan, leaving three people with minor injuries and damaging at least 40 buildings.

Atmospheric conditions became extremely unstable in Shizuoka Prefecture on Saturday. The Meteorological Agency issued a tornado advisory at one time, saying that a tornado appeared to have occurred in central parts of the prefecture.

About 200 Makinohara city officials began investigating damage on Sunday morning.

Significant damage was seen along a straight line, with houses and factories affected. At least 5 vehicles were knocked over and nearly 600 houses lost power.

A team of local weather officials is also studying damage to determine what phenomenon caused the gusts.

City officials say three people were injured by shattered glass. Residents are busy removing debris from roofs and walls torn off by winds, some of which is scattered around a nearby tea farm.

Ten years have passed since the US military killed the leader of the international terrorist group Al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden.

The mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States was killed by US special forces on May 2, 2011, at his hideout in Pakistan.

The US military operation in Afghanistan followed the Taliban-led Afghan government's rejection of its request for the extradition of Osama bin Laden in 2001.That led to the collapse of the Taliban government.

In a years-long manhunt for Osama bin Laden, the US military launched air raids on suspected hideouts using unmanned reconnaissance aircraft and deployed ground forces.

It took about 10 years for the military to finally locate his whereabouts.

Osama bin Laden had been living in a house in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, 60 kilometers north of the capital Islamabad.

The house was demolished by the Pakistani government after the Al-Qaeda leader was killed there. The site is now a vacant lot.

Pakistan's military and intelligence agencies are monitoring the site to block Muslim fundamentalists who are sympathizers of Osama bin Laden from entering the area.

A 25-year-old local resident said no one could approach the former safe house after the 2011 US raid as the compound was guarded by the Pakistani military.

He said no one in the neighborhood knew that Osama bin Laden and his family were living there and that he still can't believe it.

Most of the US-led international forces withdrew from Afghanistan after his death, allowing the Taliban to regain a foothold in the country.

In recent years, Al-Qaeda has become more active in Afghanistan in cooperation with the Taliban.

In April, the US decided to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by September 11, the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

President Joe Biden noted that the US has attained its goal of ensuring that Afghanistan would not be used as a base from which to attack the US homeland again.

But the international terrorist group still poses a threat. Al-Qaeda has expanded its activity in Yemen, where a civil war continues, and the West African Sahel, which is located south of the Sahara Desert.
