A member of Myanmar's national soccer team who appears set to file for asylum in Japan says he fears for his life if he returns to his country.

Pyae Lyan Aung spoke to reporters on Thursday at Kansai International Airport after refusing to board a plane back to Myanmar with his teammates late Wednesday.

The player told reporters that he informed an immigration officer in English that he does not wish to return to Myanmar.

He said he has decided to stay in Japan until the situation in his country changes because he believes his life would be in danger if he returns.
He also said he is worried his decision may cause trouble for his teammates and family members.

Asked why he flashed a three-finger salute before his team's match against Japan last month, the player said it took a lot of courage to do what he did.

He added that he wants to tell many people about the situation in Myanmar.

Japan's government officials plan to lift a coronavirus state of emergency in parts of the country. But they'll keep some restrictions in place. Only Okinawa will remain under the declaration.

The government is considering ending the emergency and replacing it with rigorous measures involving focused steps to contain the virus. They would be applied in seven of the 10 prefectures, including Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi and Hokkaido, till July 11.

The state of emergency in Okinawa will be extended till July 11 as the medical system there remains acutely strained.

Currently, five prefectures are placed under intensive anti-virus measures. They will be lifted in Gifu and Mie prefectures on Sunday, but extended to July 11 in the three prefectures surrounding Tokyo, namely Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa.

The government plans to consult a panel of experts on Thursday before formally adopting the policy at the government task force.

The government plans to keep the capacity limit for large events at 5,000 in prefectures under a state of emergency or intensive anti-virus measures.

Even after the measures are lifted, officials are considering capping attendance at 10,000 as a transitional measure.

Based on the plan, final arrangements are underway to hold the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games with spectators in attendance.

The government plans to consult the organizing committee of the Tokyo Games and others how to deal with the number of spectators.

The Japanese government plans to allow municipalities to issue "vaccine passports" -- documents certifying coronavirus vaccinations -- starting next month.

The European Union is considering introducing vaccine certificates. Business leaders and others in Japan want such certificates to be issued to people who travel abroad as soon as possible.

The government says that by late July, local government offices will start issuing the certificates, based on vaccination records, to people with valid passports.

The documents will show the traveler's name, nationality, passport number and vaccination date.

The government says it may also issue digital versions of the certificates that can be applied for online.

A shipment of some 1 million doses of a coronavirus vaccine that Japan sent to Vietnam has landed in Hanoi.

The AstraZeneca vaccine produced in Japan arrived at an airport in Hanoi shortly before 10 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

Health minister Nguyen Thanh Long was among those that welcomed the arrival of the vaccine at the airport.

Vietnam, which had been successful in curbing the spread of the virus through stringent measures, has seen the number of new cases soar since late April as virus variants gained ground.

But as of Tuesday, only over 1.6 percent of the population had received at least one vaccine shot. The figure is the lowest in all of Southeast Asia.

Long expressed his gratitude for the vaccine, which was provided free. He expressed determination to make good use of the doses, saying vaccinations will take place in the country's southern city of Ho Chi Minh, where the number of those infected is high.

About 4 million doses of vaccine have been delivered to Vietnam so far, including those provided by Japan.

Vietnam has a population of 97 million. The Vietnamese government is stepping up efforts to call on governments and pharmaceutical companies to secure enough vaccine for 70 percent of the country's people by the end of the year.

Thailand's prime minister says he wants to ease travel restrictions by mid-October so that the country's economy can recover after being hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a televised speech on Wednesday, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha announced a plan to receive fully vaccinated travelers from overseas without quarantine within the next 120 days.

Prayut said given the economic needs of the people the time has come to take a calculated risk. The pandemic has dealt a serious blow to the country's core industry of tourism.

Daily confirmed new cases have been above 2,000 in Thailand after the coronavirus variant known as Alpha, first detected in Britain, led to an increase from around March.

Fully vaccinated people accounted for only 2.6 percent of the Thai population as of Tuesday. Prayut says he will make sure that 75 percent of the population will get at least one shot by early October.

Key words : chinese dismiss radiation
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20210617_01/

The Chinese government has dismissed a report from a US media outlet that a leak at a Chinese nuclear power plant in the southern province of Guangdong posed a radiological threat. It also claimed that damage to a small number of fuel rods caused an increase in radiation levels.

CNN on Monday reported that a French company that helps operate the Taishan nuclear power station warned of an "imminent radiological threat" in a letter sent to the US government.

In response, China's nuclear safety watchdog, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, on Wednesday posted on its homepage contents of its question-and-answer session with reporters.

The statement reads damage was found at about five of more than 60,000 fuel rods at the plant's No. 1 reactor.

It says environmental monitoring in the vicinity of the Taishan plant found no abnormal parameters, showing no leak has occurred.

The ministry also says the increase of radiation was caused by damage that is normal during the production, transportation and loading of fuel.

But authorities made no mention of claims by the French company, EDF, that the Chinese power station treated and released radioactive gases into the atmosphere in accordance with regulations.

The effects of the global semiconductor shortage are being felt in more and more sectors in Japan. As well as major automakers, even home appliance companies are turning away disappointed shoppers.

A number of carmakers have already been forced to cut output due to the chip shortage. Toyota Motor dealerships say customers currently face a 5- to 6-month wait to get behind the wheel of the popular Yaris Cross model.

At a car accessory store in Tokyo, many navigation and audio systems are out of stock and staff say they don't know when products will become available.

Meanwhile, home appliance retailers are running short of goods as diverse as washing machines and telephones.
