The Japanese government is ending the coronavirus state of emergency on Sunday for Tokyo and eight other prefectures. Only Okinawa Prefecture will remain under the measure through July 11.

Seven of the nine prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka, will have the state of emergency replaced with focused restrictions that begin Monday.

In the areas with focused restrictions, restaurants and pubs which meet certain conditions will be allowed to serve alcohol until 7 p.m.

In Tokyo, alcohol can be served to customers who are alone or in groups of two and who stay no longer than 90 minutes.

The government is determined to work closely with prefectures to make sure the rules are observed, as the virus has been seen to spread where food and drinks are served.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide exchanged views on the outbreak in Tokyo with Governor Koike Yuriko on Saturday.

They confirmed that the vaccination rollout, which is the key to curb the outbreak, should be accelerated.

Workplace vaccinations will go into full swing on Monday.

Japan's minister in charge of the coronavirus vaccine rollout has expressed hope that elementary and junior high school students will be vaccinated during their summer break, if they choose to. He added that the education ministry will likely announce its plan on inoculations for schoolchildren in the near future.

Kono Taro appeared on a program from a commercial TV broadcaster on Sunday.

Kono said it is now known that age has little impact on the efficacy or safety of the vaccine.

The minister said he doesn't expect vaccinations to take place during classes, as they will not be mandatory.

But Kono said he hopes students will be vaccinated during the summer holidays if they choose, so that they will be able to attend the second term without worries.

Kono denied that vaccinations could make people infertile. He said the government should provide scientific explanations to refute such misinformation.

The health ministry decided late last month to expand the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in its public inoculation program to include children aged 12 through 15.

Members of Uganda's Olympic team have arrived in Japan to start gearing up for the Games at their training camp. But their preparations suffered a setback, when one person tested positive for the coronavirus at an airport quarantine station.

A plane carrying the nine teammates touched down at Narita Airport near Tokyo on Saturday. The athletes will participate in boxing, weightlifting and swimming.

Officials say the players and staff were vaccinated before they came to Japan. But one member of the group tested positive for the coronavirus during a screening at the airport. That individual is staying at a government-designated facility.

The others are traveling to their host city, Osaka Prefecture's Izumisano. They will hold their training camp there.

The Ugandan squad is the second foreign team to arrive in Japan. The Australian women's softball squad arrived on June 1.

Members of the media have received a tour of the Olympic athletes' village in a waterfront area of Tokyo.

There are three zones -- an operations zone, a large residential zone and a village plaza -- within the 44-hectare village in Harumi in Chuo ward.

Organizers of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games have shown the media around the plaza which spans over 5,000 square meters on Sunday. It has a bank, a cafe, a post office and a general store.

The building features about 40,000 pieces of timber from various municipalities in Japan.

The residential zone can house up to 18,000 athletes and staff. A village clinic is installed in the zone. As coronavirus infection is a major concern, a fever outpatient center and a station to collect specimen for testing will be set up separately near the clinic.

Olympic participants can arrive in the village five days prior to their competition and leave within two days after their competitions.

Paralympic participants can begin their stay at the village seven days prior to their competition.

The village will officially open on July 13.

A member of Myanmar's national soccer squad who made a protest gesture against a military crackdown before a match has visited a Buddhist temple in Japan to pray for the safety of his family in his home country.

Pyae Lyan Aung displayed a three-finger salute before a World Cup qualifier match in Japan last month to protest the deadly crackdown that has been launched by Myanmar's military on civilians since a coup in February.

He refused to fly back home with his teammates last Wednesday. He expressed intent to seek asylum in Japan, saying he could be punished if he returns to Myanmar.

On Sunday, Pyae Lyan Aung went to a temple in Japan's western prefecture of Osaka, where he has been staying.

He offered prayers for the victims of the crackdown. He was seen putting his palms together and wiping tears off his face while the chief priest was reading a sutra aloud.

Pyae Lyan Aung said he also prayed for an early return of peace to Myanmar. He called on people in Japan to give support to that end.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has condemned Iran's newly elected president Ebrahim Raisi, saying he is committed to the regime's nuclear ambitions and campaign of global terror.

Raisi is a conservative Islamic law scholar and judiciary chief. He won a convincing victory in Friday's presidential election, with about 62 percent of the ballots.

Lapid said on Twitter on Saturday that Raisi is an extremist responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iranians. He was apparently referring to Israel's assertion that Raisi has been involved in repression of the opposition.

Lapid added that Raisi's election "should prompt renewed determination to immediately halt Iran's nuclear program and put an end to its destructive regional ambitions."

Raisi has indicated he intends to abide by the nuclear deal, while sticking to a hardline stance of not easily compromising with the United States.

Israel sees the nuclear deal as insufficient to stop Iran's nuclear program.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who took office this month, said in a speech that Israel will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons, and that his country has complete freedom of action.

A Belgian court ruled on Friday that pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca failed to fulfill its coronavirus vaccine supply contract with the European Union. The company has been ordered to deliver about 80 million doses to the EU by September 27, including the amount it has already shipped to the bloc.

If the firm misses the deadline, it will face a penalty of 10 euros, or some 11.8 dollars, for each dose that is not delivered. This deadline is about three months later than the one sought by the EU.

The EU launched the legal action in April after it had received only around 30 million doses from AstraZeneca despite its promise to supply 120 million by March under their contract.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that the court ruling supported the EU's view.

AstraZeneca said in a statement that the court judgement acknowledged that the difficulties experienced by the firm in the "unprecedented situation" had a "substantial impact" on the delay in deliveries.

Guinea has declared an end to the latest Ebola outbreak in the West African country, about four months after the virus started spreading.

Health minister Remy Lamah made the declaration at a news conference on Saturday.

The World Health Organization says it confirmed 23 infections, including probable ones, and 12 deaths.

The WHO began collaborating with Guinea's government from the early stages of the outbreak. The organization helped vaccinate about 10,000 people and sent experts to provide assistance for treatment.

The previous Ebola outbreak in Guinea and its neighboring countries of Liberia and Sierra Leone from 2014 to 2016 killed more than 11,000 people.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement that based on the lessons learned from the previous outbreak, "Guinea managed to control the outbreak and prevent its spread beyond its borders."

A group of gunmen has attacked a school in northwest Nigeria and abducted five teachers and dozens of students.

Nigerian media reported that the attack took place on Thursday at a college in the state of Kebbi, killing one police officer.

Nigerian troops tracked down the group and rescued five students and two teachers following a gunfight on Friday. One student was found dead.

Other students and teachers are believed to be still held by the abductors.

In Nigeria, a number of attacks have taken place since Islamist militant group Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls in 2014.

Schools have been targeted and students have been taken for ransom.

A school in a neighboring state was attacked on May 30 and 136 students were taken away. They have not been released yet.

Amnesty International reports that more than 600 schools in northern Nigeria are closed as security there cannot be maintained.
