The Association of Southeast Asian Nations has submitted to Myanmar's military a list of nominees for the post of ASEAN's special envoy to the country.

ASEAN's secretariat said the chairman of its foreign ministers' meeting and the bloc's secretary-general visited Myanmar and met the country's senior officials late last week, including the military chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

The secretariat said they discussed the appointment and role of the ASEAN chair's special envoy to Myanmar, and presented the list of nominees proposed by the bloc's member countries for the position.

The secretariat did not disclose the names of the nominees.

The envoy will be tasked with mediating dialogue between the country's military and its pro-democracy entities.

Participants in the ASEAN Leaders' Meeting in April agreed to the "Five-Point Consensus" for a peaceful solution to the situation in Myanmar. It calls for the envoy's dispatch and the immediate cessation of violence.

But Myanmar's military, which launched a coup in February, appears hesitant to agree to a swift implementation of the Consensus.

The military leader recently indicated that he would consider the possibility of a visit by the envoy after the domestic situation has stabilized.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has apologized to the bereaved family of a female Air Force officer who committed suicide after alleged sexual harassment by a male colleague.

The officer took her own life last month after reporting that she had been sexually assaulted in March. Suspicions have surfaced that the military had attempted to cover up the case, leading the Air Force chief to offer to step down.

Moon met the female officer's family on Sunday amid growing criticism of the military's handling of the case.

The presidential office says he told them that he was sorry the country had failed to protect her, and promised a thorough investigation.

Earlier in the day, Moon delivered a speech at a ceremony dedicated to the war dead, including those killed during the Korean War.

He acknowledged that evil practices remain in the military, and pledged to address the problem not just for the human rights of soldiers, but also for their morale and national security.

South Korean media have been giving extensive coverage to the case daily. Yonhap News Agency called for gender equality in the military, saying some anachronistic perceptions must be corrected.

Nineteen-year-old Saso Yuka has won the US Women's Open golf tournament after a playoff with fellow Japanese golfer Hataoka Nasa.

Saso started the final round on Sunday in second place, one stroke behind the leader.

After back-to-back double bogeys on the second and third holes, she recovered by birdying the 16th and 17th holes. She finished tied with 22-year-old Hataoka at four-under.

The playoff went to a third hole, where Saso made a birdie to edge out Hataoka.

Saso was born to a Japanese father and a Filipino mother and has dual nationality.

She has become the third golfer with Japanese citizenship to win a major women's title, following Higuchi Hisako at the US LPGA Championship in 1977 and Shibuno Hinako at the 2019 Women's British Open.

The tournament organizer says Saso matched the 2008 winner Inbee Park from South Korea as the youngest US Women's Open champion at 19 years, 11 months and 17 days.

A state-run, large-scale coronavirus vaccination site in Osaka will begin inoculating senior citizens from the neighboring prefectures of Kyoto and Hyogo starting on Monday.

The central government opened two large-scale venues, one each in Osaka and Tokyo, on May 24 to accelerate vaccine rollouts for elderly people.

Their combined daily vaccination capacity began at 7,500 shots and increased to 15,000.

Eligibility at the Osaka site was initially limited to Osaka City residents aged 65 or older and later became available to residents of Osaka Prefecture in the same age group.

Eligibility at the Tokyo venue was originally restricted to elderly residents of the capital's 23 wards.

It was later expanded to include senior citizens living in other areas within Tokyo, as well as those living in the surrounding prefectures of Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa.

The expansion of services at the Tokyo venue came one week earlier than scheduled.

Starting on Monday, both venues will begin accepting reservations from June 14 through June 27.

Many schools in Japan's southern prefecture of Okinawa are temporarily closing starting Monday to curb the spread of coronavirus infections.

Okinawa has been under a state of emergency since May 23. Prefecture officials confirmed 183 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday. That's 88 fewer than a week ago, but is the second-highest daily count for a Sunday. Teenagers and younger children made up about 20 percent of total new cases.

Many schools are closing to prevent the spread of infections among children. Prefectural schools, which include high schools and junior high schools, will be closed until June 20, with the exception of four schools in the north and on a remote island, which have few cases.

Elementary and other junior high schools, mostly in the central to southern part of the main island, will also be closed until June 20.

The city of Ishigaki, which is on a remote island and has declared its own state of emergency, closed its schools last Wednesday and will keep them shut through Sunday.

Meanwhile, most municipalities in the main island's northern area and on other remote islands are keeping their schools open.

The surge of coronavirus infections in Okinawa is overwhelming the medical system in the prefecture. Okinawa has the highest number of new cases per capita among Japan's 47 prefectures.

NHK has learned that about 3,500 out of more than 40,000 "City Volunteers" recruited to act as city guides during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo have withdrawn.

This is in addition to the approximately 10,000 out of 80,000 "Field Cast" volunteers, due to work at event venues and the athletes' village, who had withdrawn by Tuesday.

Nine out of the 11 prefectural governments that recruited City Volunteers submitted their withdrawal numbers.

Chiba Prefecture topped the list with 1,083 withdrawals by the end of last month, followed by Miyagi with about 800 and Fukushima with about 630.

The total is expected to increase when Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture confirm their numbers.

The prefectures say many volunteers' life situations, such as their work or studies, have changed since the games were postponed.

They say many withdrew because of concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.

Some said they no longer had any reason to participate as there will be no overseas spectators. Others were worried about public opinion, with municipalities split over holding the games.

The prefectures say the withdrawals will not affect the running of the games. They say they will work to ease volunteers' anxieties by explaining during training sessions the measures being taken to prevent infections.

The Australian women's Olympic softball team has started practicing at its training camp in Ota City, Gunma Prefecture.

They have been staying in a hotel since they arrived on Tuesday but, as none of the players developed any symptoms, they were able to travel to a ball park in the city on Saturday morning.

City officials say the team members threw pitches and practiced fielding and batting. The practice was closed to the public as part of anti-infection measures.

The officials say they hope to be able to start allowing people to watch the team from the stands.

The team's head coach, Laing Harrow, thanked the city for its efforts, and said the players were happy to be able to start preparing for the games.

Local officials in central Japan have prayed for the safety of trekkers on Mount Ontake as the climbing season opened for the area. The mountain erupted seven years ago, causing the country's deadliest volcanic disaster since World War Two.

The mountain straddling Gifu and Nagano prefectures erupted in September 2014, leaving 58 people dead and five missing. Volcanic activity has since subsided and the number of trekkers on the mountain is starting to increase.

A ceremony to pray for climbers' safety took place on Sunday at the foot of the mountain in Gifu's Gero City. The number of participants was limited to about 10 to prevent coronavirus infection.

They observed a moment of silence to remember the victims of the eruption.

The leader of a local tourism association said mountain trails will be repaired while measures are taken to secure climbers' safety. He added that he wants trekkers to enjoy climbing Ontake.
