Coronavirus variants with the L452R mutation that were first detected in India are spreading at a fast pace in Tokyo.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government on Wednesday confirmed 55 new cases of variants with the mutation. The daily figure is the second largest for infections by such variants and brings the total number of such cases in Japan's capital to 349.

Variants involving the mutation were found for the first time in Tokyo on April 20. The number of cases exceeded 300 in 72 days.

Meanwhile, cases involving variants with the N501Y mutation that were first identified in Britain reached the 300 mark about 80 days after being first found in Tokyo in January.

Cases of variants carrying the mutation topped 1,000 nine days after passing 300.

Experts of the metropolitan government say L452R mutation variants are reportedly more transmissible than the N501Y type. They add that in light of situations overseas, L452R variants may quickly replace the N501Y type.

As L452R cases increase, the total number of coronavirus infections in Tokyo is also rising.

The metropolitan government on Wednesday confirmed 714 new cases of the coronavirus, up 95 from a week earlier. This is the first time since May 26 that the daily tally has topped 700. The average for the seven-day period ending Wednesday stood at 508.4. The average has been on the rise since June 20.

China's Communist Party has wrapped up its centennial that included a highly choreographed spectacle designed to highlight the party's role in the country's progress.

President Xi Jinping gave a keynote speech on Thursday to talk about the party's strategy for further prosperity and securing its presence in the world.

A 100-cannon salute kicked things off at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Xi watched the military march at the venue.

Xi took to the podium to stress the party's success in uniting the country. He added the nation's rejuvenation couldn't have happened without the Communist Party's presence.

The Chinese President said the Chinese Communist Party has achieved the goal they have had for a hundred years. He added, "We have built a moderately prosperous society. This means that we have brought about a historic resolution to the problem of absolute poverty in China."

Xi also looked ahead to the future. He said the party will build what he called a "great" country in the years ahead.

He also made it clear that China will upgrade its military to safeguard sovereignty, security, and development.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed that the country has become the world's second-largest economy under the Communist Party as the party celebrates its 100th birthday.

Xi delivered a speech at the party's centenary ceremony on Thursday in front of a crowd of over 70,000 people in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

Xi said the party had resolved the problem of poverty that had been its goal for a hundred years.

He also said China had accomplished historic progress by turning a country that had poor manufacturing power into the world's second-largest economy.

Xi added that without the Communist Party, the People's Republic of China would not have been founded and the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" would be impossible. He said history and people chose the Communist Party and stressed its legitimacy.

Xi noted that the country must be profoundly aware of the new contradictions brought about by a complicated international environment, suggesting that China will stand up to international criticism.

Under single-party rule, China made a transition to a market economy while upholding socialism. In 2010, it became the world's second-largest economy following the US.

But China is facing challenges including an economic slowdown, a rapidly aging population and rising tensions with the United States.

Xi's speech was apparently aimed at stressing the importance of the party's leadership in addressing such challenges and enhancing his authority with an eye to long-term rule.

Myanmar's military announced the release of about 2,300 people on Wednesday, including those detained for protesting against its February coup. The military did not clarify the reason for the move.

In front of Insein Prison in the country's largest city of Yangon, those freed were welcomed by friends and family members with hugs and handshakes.

Security forces in Myanmar have continued their crackdown against civilians opposing military rule, including using lethal force. Many protesters have been held in detention.

The human rights group Assistance Association for Political Prisoners says that over 5,000 people had been detained nationwide as of Tuesday.

The group released a statement on Wednesday. It says in part, "The junta is releasing people whilst arrests go on. The international community must not accept this as a relaxation."

The United States and Taiwan have resumed trade and investment talks after a five-year hiatus.

Senior trade officials from both sides held an online meeting of the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement Council on Wednesday.

The Office of the US Trade Representative said in a statement that the two sides emphasized Taiwan's role as a partner with the US in reforming the multilateral trading system. It added the officials expressed support for joint work to enhance critical supply chain security and resilience.

The participants also discussed the worker-centered trade policy advocated by US President Joe Biden's administration and agreed to set up a working group to support that policy.

At a news conference after the meeting, a Taiwanese official said the two sides also agreed to continue talks to simplify procedures for exports and imports of coronavirus vaccines and other medical supplies. Taiwan is lagging behind others in the effort to procure COVID vaccines.

The bilateral talks had been suspended during the administration of former US President Donald Trump.

Taiwan hopes the talks will lead to a free trade agreement with the US.

Washington has been reluctant to sign free trade deals with other countries and territories, even under the Biden administration.

The US revived talks with Taiwan to deepen bilateral ties and counter China, which Biden regards as his country's most serious competitor.

The head of the International Olympic Committee has called on everybody engaged in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics to strictly follow anti-coronavirus protocols.

IOC President Thomas Bach sent a letter to national Olympic committees and international sports federations on Tuesday, before the influx of athletes into Japan gets into full swing.

Bach says in the letter, "We are well into the delivery phase of safe and secure Games," which he describes as "unlike any that we have experienced in the past."

He says, "now more than ever, we have to work together as one team" to "keep our efforts and energy focused on achieving the best results."

Bach stresses that "the eyes of the world will be on us, scrutinizing our every action." He urges strict adherence to anti-coronavirus rules set out in Olympic Playbooks.

In the letter, Bach assures that close to 100 percent of IOC members and staff, 84 percent of athletes and some 70 to 80 percent of media representatives will be vaccinated before they arrive in Japan.

Overseas athletes have been arriving in Japan ahead of the Olympics, which start on July 23. The Australian softball team arrived on June 1, followed by teams from Uganda and Singapore.

An athlete and a coach from Uganda tested positive for the coronavirus after arriving on June 19.

North Korean media is reporting that the country's leader Kim Jong Un said a "grave incident" had occurred due to lapses in anti-coronavirus measures. Kim also reportedly accused senior officials of being incompetent and irresponsible.

The ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun said on Wednesday that Kim had attended an extended politburo meeting of the party the previous day.

The paper quoted Kim as saying that by neglecting the party's decisions, in the fight against the virus, officials in charge had caused a "grave incident" to occur that poses a danger to the safety of the nation and its people.

The paper did not give detailed information about what Kim described as the "grave incident."

North Korea has maintained that no coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the country.

The paper also carried a photo of the leader's sister, Kim Yo Jong, speaking before microphones during the meeting. This suggests that she has an important role in the party.

Meanwhile, North Korea's state-run television recently broadcast footage of a citizen expressing concerns about Kim Jong Un's apparent weight loss.

In the interview aired last week, a man said people were heartbroken to see the leader looking slimmer.

It is unusual for North Korea's state-run TV to air footage in which Kim's health is mentioned.

Isozaki Atsuhito is a professor at Japan's Keio University and an expert on North Korea. He says he believes the footage is aimed at prompting citizens to persevere amid the economic hardships and shortages of food supplies, so as not to burden Kim.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency has quoted the country's unification ministry as saying that it is keeping an eye on Kim's health, but that it has nothing to say about his weight loss.

Japan's Mitsubishi Electric has apologized following revelations it has been faking inspection data for its train air conditioning systems. The misconduct could span three decades.

The electrical appliance maker says it discovered irregularities at a factory in Nagasaki Prefecture during the revision of a product check system.

An internal investigation uncovered falsified data for safety and performance inspections.
Mitsubishi maintains there are no problems with products that have already been shipped.

The firm supplies train air conditioners to operators in the United States and Europe, as well as Japan.

Mitsubishi will investigate further and is in the process of interviewing employees.
