The Tokyo Olympic softball and football events are set to start on Wednesday, two days before the opening ceremony.

Most of the Olympic events will be held without spectators, due to a resurgence in coronavirus infections in Tokyo and other parts of the country.

The opening round of the softball event will start at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, ahead of all the other events. Japan will play against Australia at a stadium in the northeastern city of Fukushima.

Ueno Yukiko is the Japanese team's ace pitcher. The squad is hoping to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the sport. The team won the top prize at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Japan is ranked second in the world. The eighth-ranked Australian team won the bronze in Beijing. The two teams are tied in previous Olympic face-offs, with four wins and four losses each.

The group stage of Women's football starts later on the same day. A match between China and Brazil will take place in the northeastern prefecture of Miyagi. It will be the first Tokyo 2020 Olympic event that spectators will be permitted to attend. The match is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m.

Japan will play against Canada on the same day in the northern city of Sapporo. But spectators will not be able to watch at the venue.

Captain Kumagai Saki and ace striker Iwabuchi Mana will lead the Japanese squad. The team is aiming to win the country's first Olympic gold medal in the sport.

Kumagai and Iwabuchi were on the national women's team that won the 2011 World Cup. Japan is ranked 10th in the world. Canada is the world's eighth-ranked team.

Officials in Tokyo confirmed more than 1,800 new infections in the capital on Wednesday. It marks the highest daily tally in more than six months.

The figure rose more than 680 from last Wednesday. Health experts are warning that the daily case number could surpass the all-time high recorded in early January.

Tokyo's governor is concerned about the current spike. Koike Yuriko said she should share a stronger sense of crisis than ever with everyone.

New cases are also rising in Tokyo's neighboring prefectures, as well as in Osaka, Hokkaido and Okinawa. Tokyo and Okinawa will be under a state of emergency until August 22.

Authorities reported more than 4,900 infections across Japan on Wednesday.

Japan's Imperial Household Agency says Emperor Naruhito will attend the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics unaccompanied by any other member of the imperial family.

The agency made the announcement on Tuesday.

As Honorary Patron of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the Emperor is due to declare the Olympics open at the ceremony to be held on Friday at the National Stadium in Tokyo.

The agency says Empress Masako will not be joining the Emperor. The decision was made in keeping with the plan for other Olympic officials, who are to attend unaccompanied by their spouses.

The opening ceremony, along with most events, will be held without spectators due to a resurgence in coronavirus cases in Tokyo and other parts of the country.

On the day before the ceremony, the Emperor will receive a courtesy call at the Imperial Palace from senior officials of the International Olympic Committee, including IOC President Thomas Bach.

On the day of the ceremony, the Emperor will also receive foreign VIPs at the palace.

Past Olympic competitions in Japan have seen members of the Imperial Family viewing events in person, but none will be graced with their presence on this occasion.

The crew members of a South Korean navy destroyer that was hit by a coronavirus outbreak returned home by plane on Tuesday. They were on an anti-piracy mission in the waters of the Gulf of Aden off Somalia.

The South Korean military said on Monday that 247 of the unit's 301 members had tested positive. That figure represents about 80 percent of the unit.

The South Korean government dispatched two transport aircraft. The 301 members all arrived at an airport in the suburb of Seoul on Tuesday. Those infected with the virus are expected to receive treatment at hospitals and other medical facilities.

The government has come under criticism for its delayed response to the outbreak.

Local media outlets say authorities failed to conduct sufficient tests when some crew members first exhibited common cold-like symptoms. The outlets say the crew members were only given medicine for their symptoms.

President Moon Jae-in said that the government cannot escape the criticism that the measures it took were insufficient. He also said that he is taking the criticism seriously. Defense Minister Suh Wook has issued an apology.

Ozeki champion Terunofuji has been promoted to sumo's highest rank of yokozuna.

The Japan Sumo Association formally made the decision at an extraordinary meeting of its board of governors on Wednesday.

The association's messengers delivered the news to the Mongolian-born wrestler at his stable in Tokyo.

Terunofuji said he will "strive to maintain an unflinching spirit, and enhance the dignity and ability" as a yokozuna grand champion.

Terunofuji is the first new yokozuna since Japanese-born Kisenosato won promotion in 2017, and the first in the Reiwa era, which began in 2019.

The 29-year-old's career is marked by a stunning comeback. After first reaching the rank of ozeki in 2015, he was marred by injury and illness, and dropped to the second lowest rank of jonidan at one point.

Thanks to hard work, he reclaimed the ozeki title in March, and won the subsequent tournament in May. He narrowly missed the title in the most recent tournament in Nagoya where he finished with a 14-1 record.

Terunofuji is the seventh foreign-born yokozuna, and the fifth from Mongolia.
