The Tokyo Olympic organizing committee has confirmed that two athletes who tested positive for the coronavirus are players of South Africa's men's soccer team staying at the Athletes' Village.

The committee on Sunday identified the two players as defender James Monyane and midfielder Kamohelo Mahlatsi.

The committee had reported the two infections earlier in the day, but revealed no details. These were the first positive cases reported among athletes staying at the village.

The committee is not disclosing details of other infected athletes and staff.

But it decided to make the information on these two athletes public after South Africa's Olympic Committee confirmed the infections of the two players, as well as a video analyst.

South Africa is scheduled to play Japan in a group stage match on Thursday.

The committee says the three people are being isolated in a hotel outside the Olympic Village.

South Korea's defense ministry says 68 sailors on a navy destroyer deployed on an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The ministry says some crew members showed symptoms resembling those of a cold after the ship stopped at a port in a nearby country, and that all of the approximately 300 sailors have had PCR tests. The results for about 200 are still pending.

The crew had not been vaccinated for the virus, as the ship had left South Korea in February.

President Moon Jae-in ordered that a medical team and necessary supplies to be dispatched to the ship. Transport aircraft left on Sunday to retrieve the crew.

In a similar case, Britain's Royal Navy reported a coronavirus outbreak in its carrier strike group headed to Indo-Pacific earlier this month. The group includes the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.

Protesters rallied in the Thai capital Bangkok on Sunday, demanding Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha step down over the government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Thailand reported 11,784 new cases on Monday, setting a new high for the fourth day in a row.

Critics blame the surge on the government's inadequate responses, including slow procurement of vaccines.

Gatherings of more than five people are banned in Bangkok to prevent infections, but police say about 1,000 people took part.

Some demonstrators clashed with police. Authorities say at least two protesters were injured and treated at hospital.

People in Thailand have taken to the streets almost every week since June as the coronavirus continues to spread in the country.

Vietnamese authorities are stepping up anti-virus measures as a record 5,926 new coronavirus cases were confirmed on Sunday in the country.

Vietnam had managed to keep infections under control with strict measures. But the case count has been surging since the end of April with the Delta variant, first detected in India, spreading in the country.

Many of the infections have been reported in the southern areas of the country. The largest city Ho Chi Minh imposed tough social-distancing rules from July 9, including restrictions on nonessential outings. But infections continue to spread.

Some of the measures introduced in the nation's capital Hanoi include a 14-day self-isolation period for people coming from Ho Chi Minh and other localities. Checkpoints have also been set up on main roads connecting to Ho Chi Minh. Starting Monday, gatherings of more than five people are prohibited in public places.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing off the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan after 18 fishing boats were swamped by high waves last week.

Local authorities in Pontianak in the province say the boats capsized in a storm that struck during predawn hours last Wednesday.

Of the 138 fishermen on the boats, 80 were rescued by Sunday, 15 were confirmed dead, and 43 others are missing.

The storm brought heavy rain and strong winds to the area on Tuesday and Wednesday. Waves reached as high as five meters.

The authorities have been searching for the missing with the navy.

This is the latest in a series of accidents involving Indonesian vessels.

Last month, a ferry sank with 57 people on board when it was heading from eastern Java Island for Bali Island. At least 10 people were killed.

Japan and Panama have agreed to strengthen communication and coordination between the two countries and promote economic cooperation.

Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu met his Panamanian counterpart Erika Mouynes during his visit to the Central American country on Sunday.

Motegi and Mouynes exchanged opinions for about an hour on China's growing influence in East Asia and Central and South American countries.

Panama severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 2017 and established ties with China the same year.

Motegi said Japan wants to work with Panama for a free and open international order based on the rule of law, as the two countries share basic common values.

Mouynes said that Panama shares Japan's interests and concerns. She said Panama acknowledges the importance of multilateralism and wants to strengthen communication and coordination with Japan.

The two ministers agreed to hold economic dialogue at an early date involving government officials and business leaders from both countries.

They also agreed to promote economic cooperation in digital technology and investment for high-quality infrastructure.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday to mark two years since the deadly arson attack at a studio of the Kyoto Animation production company in western Japan.

Thirty-six employees were killed and 32 others suffered injuries in the attack that shocked anime fans at home and abroad.

The memorial service will be held at the site in Kyoto City where the studio once stood. Families of victims will offer prayers, along with Kyoto Animation President Hatta Hideaki and other employees.

Fans have been asked not to visit due to the coronavirus pandemic. Kyoto Animation says it will stream a 10-minute memorial video on its YouTube channel from 10:30 a.m., Japan time.

Prosecutors have indicted 43-year-old Aoba Shinji on murder, arson, and other charges. But it remains unclear when his trial will start.

Key words : consultation trainee
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20210718_10/

Japan's labor ministry and other entities have jointly developed a smartphone app that allows foreign technical trainees to seek consultation about their work environments.

Japan has a system designed to enable trainees from developing countries to learn skills, technologies, and expertise while working in the country. As of the end of last year, Japan had more than 370,000 such trainees.

The Organization for Technical Intern Training, or OTIT, offers consultation to trainees in their native languages regarding matters such as violence or excessively long work hours. It gave advice in about 7,400 cases in the fiscal year through March 2020.

But groups supporting trainees say many of them have not sought advice from the OTIT, as they do not know about the existence of the consultation service.

The app jointly created by several entities, including the labor ministry and the OTIT, allows trainees to easily connect with the consultation service.

The app is available in 10 languages, including Vietnamese and Chinese. It displays the phone number of the consultation service, letting users call it with a single click.

The app also gives users information in their native tongues about issues such as the coronavirus pandemic and natural disasters.

The labor ministry and others plan to promote the app on their websites and social media, and will encourage trainees to download it when they enter Japan.

The French film festival ended on Saturday.
