A group of 31 United Nations member countries, including the United States and Japan, have called on North Korea to immediately return the people it has abducted.

Representatives of these nations issued a joint statement on Friday before a UN Security Council meeting on human rights in North Korea.

The closed-door meeting was held at the request of the US and others ahead of the UN's Human Rights Day on December 10.

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield read out the statement noting systematic human rights violations in North Korea.

It expresses concern about the North's abductions of Japanese and other nationals, and strongly urges Pyongyang "to resolve all outstanding issues with detainees, abductees, and disappeared and immediately return them to their homes."

The statement points out that Pyongyang is using its resources and revenue from forced labor in the country and abroad to fund weapons development. It says this is going on even as North Korean citizens suffer from severe economic hardship and malnutrition.

The statement says, "The modern world has no place for such brutality."

Last year, seven countries issued a similar joint statement.

Japanese UN Ambassador Ishikane Kimihiro told reporters that gaining understanding from the international community is necessary to resolve the abduction issue.

He added that it is important for more countries to make a joint appeal.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has hailed the country's first summit with Arab states as a milestone in the history of their relations, stressing close ties with the Arab world.

The summit in Saudi Arabia on Friday brought together Xi and leaders of Arab nations in the Middle East and Africa.

The Chinese side quoted Xi as saying the summit will bring friendship and cooperation for a better future.

The meeting was chaired by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He said it is important to work together in the face of global challenges over energy and food security.

He said Arab states have a great interest in China as an economic power, and expressed a willingness to strengthen cooperation with the country in various fields.

China described the summit as "the largest and highest-level diplomatic event between China and the Arab world since the founding of the People's Republic of China."

Observers say China wants to stress the importance of ties with Arab states and counter the influence of the United States in the region.

It was Xi's first visit to Saudi Arabia since 2016. He held talks with leaders and officials from over 10 states. He met with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and others.

China is believed to be trying to enhance its presence in the Arab world to secure a stable supply of oil. It is also promoting its Belt and Road initiative to create a vast economic zone.

The inaugural meeting of a forum launched by Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to discuss nuclear disarmament takes place this weekend in Hiroshima.

Delegates at the International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons, or IGEP, are from both nuclear and non-nuclear states.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and former US President Barack Obama are scheduled to send video messages on Saturday.

Kishida is set to deliver a speech at the closing session on Sunday. He is expected to reaffirm his commitment to realizing the abolition of nuclear arms.

Denuclearization initiatives have stalled recently. In August, delegates at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review failed to find broad consensus or adopt a joint document.

Kishida wants to use IGEP to revive global momentum ahead of the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima next May.
