A Japanese venture firm has successfully launched what could become the first privately-funded spacecraft to land on the moon.

The uncrewed lunar lander was developed by Tokyo-based startup ispace. The rocket carrying the lander was launched from Florida by US firm SpaceX at 7:38 UTC on Sunday.

The spacecraft was separated from the rocket 47 minutes after liftoff. It will cruise toward the moon, which is about 380,000 kilometers from the Earth.

It is expected to touch down on the moon's surface at the end of April next year. If successful, it will be the first time for a private company to land a spacecraft on the moon.

The launch had been postponed for about a month for additional inspections.

The lander is carrying small robots developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and other entities. It will conduct surface probes and experiment with various kinds of technology.

Research papers released in recent years suggest that there is water on the moon. It is now considered to be a potential base for human activity in space.

International competition in the field of space development has been intensifying with projects such as the US-led Artemis lunar exploration program.

Private businesses are also trying to expand the areas in space that can be used for commercial purposes.

The planned lunar landing could usher in a new era for business opportunities on the moon.

The policy chief of Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party has called for closer coordination among Japan, Taiwan and the United States, as China steps up military pressure on Taiwan.

Hagiuda Koichi made the call when he spoke at a gathering in Taiwan on Sunday.

He referred to remarks by former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo that a contingency involving Taiwan is a contingency for Japan and the Japan-US alliance.

Hagiuda noted that Japan plans to drastically enhance its defense capabilities within five years, raising defense and related spending to a level similar to NATO countries -- about two percent or more of the GDP.

The LDP executive said members of his party are looking at ways to secure stable revenue sources, including raising taxes. But he said using funds earmarked for government bond redemption could also be an option.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has told ruling coalition lawmakers to consider raising taxes to cover the increase in defense spending.

Hagiuda is the first LDP executive to visit Taiwan in 19 years.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of striking energy infrastructure in the southern region of Odesa with Iranian drones, causing a massive blackout.

In a video message on Saturday, Zelenskyy said, "The situation in Odesa region is very difficult. After the night strike by Iranian drones, Odesa and other cities and villages of the region are in the dark." He went on to say that more than 1.5 million people in the region were without electricity.

Zelenskyy claimed that Russia had used 15 drones against Odesa over one night. He said, "This is the true attitude of Russia towards Odesa, towards Odesa residents." He called Russia's actions "deliberate bullying" and "deliberate attempt to bring disaster to the city."

The US government says its intelligence analysis shows that Russia and Iran are considering setting up a drone assembly line in Russia. US officials also say Russia may be providing Iran with helicopters and air defense systems, in return for drones.

The US and European countries are wary of the deepening military ties between the two countries.

Russian drone attacks caused large scale blackouts in Ukraine's southern region of Odesa on Saturday.

Russia has been targeting energy infrastructures in various parts of Ukraine.

The head of Ukraine's state power company Ukrenergo told reporters on Friday that more than 1,000 missiles and drones had hit energy infrastructure facilities since October.

Odesa's regional governor said in a social media post that drones attacked energy facilities again on Saturday, cutting almost all power supplies in and around the region.

Deputy head of Ukraine's presidential office, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, noted on Saturday that repeated Russian shelling of hospitals and other buildings in the southern region of Kherson had killed two civilians.

Meanwhile the BBC's Russian language site on Friday claimed that around 10,000 Russian service members were confirmed to have died in Ukraine. About 400 of them are said to be mobilized reserve soldiers.

The site said the numbers were tabulated using death notices which were made public.

The report says that the real number of fatalities may exceed 20,000, and the total losses, including those who were injured or missing, could be as high as 90,000.

Russian defense officials said in late September that 5,937 Russian soldiers had died, and no updates have been made since.

Belgian media are reporting that a vice president of the European Union's parliament has been detained in connection with a corruption scandal allegedly involving Qatar, where the FIFA World Cup is now being held.

Belgian authorities say they searched 16 locations in Brussels on Friday as part of an investigation into alleged corruption.

Prosecutors said in a statement that investigators recovered about 600,000 euros, or about 633,000 dollars, in cash and seized mobile phones.

They say that a Gulf country is suspected of paying large sums of money or offering large gifts to people with a significant position within the European Parliament to influence decisions at the assembly.

Details have not been disclosed, but local media report that European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili was detained over a case allegedly involving Qatar.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in her Twitter account, "At this stage, we cannot comment on any ongoing investigations." She said her institution is fully cooperating with all relevant law enforcement and judicial authorities.

The EU parliament adopted a resolution in November on the human rights condition in Qatar. It urges the Qatari authorities to fully investigate migrant worker deaths that reportedly occurred during stadium construction and other preparations for the FIFA World Cup.

The resolution also calls for the investigations into the awarding of World Cups, which it says is tainted with corruption, to be continued.
