A fire at a fuel depot in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta has killed at least 15 people, injured dozens of others and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate.
The fire started after 8 p.m. local time on Friday at the fuel depot operated by a state-run oil company. It spread to a nearby residential area.
Local media say that 15 people, including two children, have been confirmed dead and eight others remain unaccounted for. About 50 people have been treated at hospitals for burns and injuries.
The flames and a foul odor sent residents in the densely populated area around the facility into a panic. The disaster forced about 640 people to evacuate.
An official of the oil company told reporters that the blaze may have been caused by a lightning strike after a pipeline had been damaged by heavy rain.
There have been concerns about the safety of the depot due to its proximity to the residential area.
The Indonesian government has instructed the company to promptly investigate the incident.

Ministers of Japan and its Asian neighbors gathered in Tokyo on Saturday to discuss their economies and the environment. They are looking at ways to accelerate sustained growth, as well as decarbonization in the region.
The group's first-ever ministerial meeting involves ministers from nine Southeast Asian countries and Australia.
Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio sent a video message to the event.
Kishida said ensuring stable energy supplies while making efforts toward decarbonization is a major policy challenge.
Kishida said he hopes Japan and Asian nations will work together to establish wide-ranging supply chains.
In the meeting, Japan's industry minister Nishimura Yasutoshi said various realistic approaches toward carbon neutrality should be taken, with consideration for the circumstances of each country.
He also said Japan will work to develop zero-emission technologies and expand markets for them, thereby reducing costs.
Participants discussed how to promote decarbonization in Southeast Asian countries, which are highly reliant on coal for power generation. Energy consumption is rising in emerging economies as they grow.
Japanese officials said Japan will help countries develop methods to mix coal with ammonia or hydrogen, which do not produce CO2 when burned.
They also said Tokyo will provide financial assistance for such efforts.
Achieving both carbon neutrality and economic growth is also likely to be on the agenda for the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima in May.
As G7 chair, Japan apparently hopes to take the zero-emission initiative through joint efforts by the public and private sectors.

Construction of public housing is underway for people who have lost their homes in quake-hit southern Turkey.
On Wednesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said there will be enough for 468,000 households.
Workers were seen using large machinery to prepare the ground on Friday in the Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province.
The area was hit hard by the February 6 earthquakes.
Local officials say construction is scheduled for completion in November.
They plan to build 41 units that can accommodate about 20 households each for a total of about 800.
Some people expressed eagerness to move in, but others are skeptical about earthquake resistance.
One woman said she does not want to live in public housing that has not been confirmed safe by experts.

Russian forces claim they are about to seize the key Ukrainian city Bakhmut, and are calling on Ukraine's president to withdraw his troops.
The head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said on social media on Friday that his units had "practically surrounded Bakhmut," a stronghold of Ukrainian forces in Donetsk, a region in the country's east.
He added, "Only one route is left" for the Ukrainian soldiers who remain.
In a video released the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed defiance.
He said repelling the enemy is a "prerequisite for the success of our defense operations in the coming months."
The president expressed his gratitude to Ukrainian soldiers defending Bakhmut for their bravery.
Zelenskyy attended a meeting in the western city of Lviv on Friday. Also present were the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, and other top legal officials from the United States, Britain and the European Union.
The Ukrainian president asked for further cooperation to hold Russia accountable for its crimes and human rights violations.
He said, "True justice is when all the people who are guilty are brought to justice according to the law."
In the United States, the Defense Department on Friday announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth up to 400 million dollars.
The package includes additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, as well as portable armored vehicle-launched bridges to move tanks and other vehicles across rivers.
The equipment is apparently aimed at enabling the prompt deployment of military vehicles supplied by Western countries.
The department says the United States and its allies will continue to work together to provide Ukraine with important military capabilities.

The leaders of US and Germany have been in "lockstep" over their support of Ukraine. And they say they will continue to coordinate military aid. However, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says the situation has become "very complicated."
On Friday, Scholz visited the White House for the first time since the start of the invasion. US President Joe Biden welcomed him and said that, together, they have made good on their promise to Ukraine. He thanked Scholz for stepping up to provide "critical military support."
Scholz said it is very important they drive home the point that they will continue to support Ukraine for "as long as it takes."
Biden's national security advisor has revealed that Germany agreed to send its Leopard battle tanks only after the US pledged to send its own Abrams tanks. Jake Sullivan said Biden made the decision to accept the condition "in the interest of alliance unity."
However, German officials deny Scholz made such a demand, saying the move was a "joint agreement."
The two leaders have been increasing their pressure on China to refrain from providing any weapons to Russia. Scholz has been calling on the Chinese to use their "influence" to urge Moscow to withdraw troops.
However, China is Germany's biggest trading partner, and US leaders have said they will target Beijing with sanctions if it supports Russia's war efforts.

The agency says more than 1,000 pupils had complained of such problems by the end of last month.

On Friday, President Ebrahim Raisi blamed Iran's enemies for what he described as a plan to instill fear and insecurity among parents and students.
On Thursday, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby called for a "thorough and complete" investigation.
And on Friday, a spokesperson for the UN human rights office called for transparency.

The White House doctor says President Joe Biden's biopsy in February confirmed he had a kind of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma. The physician said the cancerous tissue was successfully removed.
Physician Kevin O'Connor said in a memorandum on Friday that a skin lesion was removed from Biden's chest as part of his comprehensive health assessment last month, and the tissue was sent for biopsy.
He said the site of the biopsy has healed and no further treatment is required.
The memorandum said basal cell carcinoma lesions do not tend to spread, and that the president will continue dermatological surveillance.
At 80, Biden is now the oldest president in US history.
