South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will visit Japan for two days from next Thursday to hold summit talks with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio. It will be the first visit to Japan by a South Korean president in about four years.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu announced the visit in a news conference on Thursday.
Matsuno said the countries are important neighbors that should cooperate in dealing with the various challenges facing the international community.
He said Japan's government decided to invite the president for a working visit as the two sides have had close communications since Yoon took office.
Matsuno said the government hopes the visit will help further develop Japan-South Korea ties on the basis of the relationship of friendship and cooperation they have had since the normalization of relations in 1965.
South Korea's Office of the President has also announced Yoon's two-day trip to Japan with his wife.
The office stressed that the visit will mark the resumption of the leaders' exchanges and will be an important milestone for the improvement and development of bilateral relations.
It expressed hope that through Yoon's visit, the two countries will expand their multifaceted cooperation in security, economy, society and culture and further enliven exchanges between their peoples so that they will overcome the unfortunate history of the past and move toward the future.
The governments of the two countries have been arranging Yoon's visit in view of Seoul's announcement on Monday of a plan aimed at settling the long-pending issue of wartime labor compensation.
The Japanese government is hoping that the presidential visit will lead to the improvement of relations with South Korea, which have been strained over wartime labor and other issues.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to be reelected for a third term on Friday.
China's National People's Congress passed a constitutional amendment in 2018, scrapping the limit of two five-year terms for president.
Xi's expected reelection at a plenary session of the congress would allow him to remain at the top of the party, state and military. Xi entered an unprecedented third term as general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party last year. He is also chairman of the Central Military Commission.
Xi is also expected to further cement his grip on power by filling key government posts with officials close to him.
Meanwhile, Vice President Wang Qishan is likely to be replaced by Vice Premier Han Zheng, who was a member of the Standing Committee of the party's Political Bureau until last year's National Congress of the party.

Malaysia's anti-graft agency says former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been arrested and will face corruption charges.
The agency said in a statement on Thursday that Muhyiddin was taken into custody after he was questioned about an economic recovery project launched by his government.
A crowd of supporters had gathered outside the agency building, chanting "Allahu Akbar," or "God is great" in Arabic.
Muhyiddin will face several charges related to alleged abuse of power and money laundering. He served as prime minister for 17 months until August 2021.
He and his party have come under scrutiny since his loss to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in a tightly contested election in November.
Anwar ordered a review of government projects approved by Muhyiddin, alleging that they did not follow proper procedures. These included COVID-19 relief programs.
In 2018, former Prime Minister Najib Razak was arrested over a corruption scandal involving the state fund called 1MDB. He was found guilty last year.

An Indonesian court has sentenced a soccer club's organizer and its security chief to prison over a deadly stadium stampede last October.
The incident occurred after a professional match in Malang, East Java province. Police fired tear gas after fans of the defeated home team stormed the pitch, causing a stampede of panicked spectators. A total of 135 people were killed and more than 600 injured.
Local media say the organizing committee chair of the home team was sentenced to 18 months in prison, and the club's security chief to 12 months for negligence causing death and bodily harm.
They were found responsible for selling tickets beyond capacity and hindering the evacuation process.
A government fact-finding team concluded that the firing of tear gas was the main cause of the stampede resulting in the high number of deaths. Panicked fans tried to flee the choking smoke and run for the exits, but several gates were still locked after the match was over.
Guidelines set out by soccer's world governing body FIFA on stadium safety ban the use of firearms or tear gas at matches.
Three police officials who allowed or ordered officers to use tear gas are also being tried on the charges of negligence.
