Thai authorities are preparing to rescue 12 members of a boys' soccer team and their coach who were found trapped deep inside a cave in northern Thailand.

The boys and the coach went missing in the cave in Chiang Rai Province on June 23rd but were found alive there on Monday.

They're about 5 kilometers from the entrance of the cave, which has been flooded by heavy rains.

The province's governor is leading rescue efforts but he declined to say when the operation to bring the team out can start.

He told reporters on Wednesday that the boys have been practicing wearing diving masks, but that the operation is unlikely to start on Wednesday unless it is completely safe.

A diver with the rescue team told reporters that they were told by Navy officials to bring 15 diving masks that cover the entire face.

The diver said such masks could be used by boys with no diving experience.

Full-face dive masks are filled with air from diving cylinders.

A State Department spokesperson has suggested that the United States will continue to demand North Korea's complete denuclearization.

Heather Nauert made the comment on Tuesday ahead of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang later in the week. He is expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and other officials.

Nauert said there will be no surprises in terms of what the US is asking North Korea to do. She added that the policy remains the same today as it was going into the US-North Korea summit in Singapore.

She said the administration of President Donald Trump has made a lot of progress, looking back to when North Korea launched what it called an intercontinental ballistic missile one year ago.

Some US media are reporting that Pyongyang is continuing its nuclear and missile developments after the Singapore summit.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono is visiting the International Atomic Energy Agency in Austria to discuss North Korea's denuclearization.

Kono left Tokyo on Wednesday for a 4-day tour of Austria and Poland.

Kono plans to meet IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano at the UN nuclear watchdog agency's headquarters in Vienna.

They are expected to discuss Japan's role in the case that North Korea accepts IAEA inspections as a step toward nuclear disarmament.

Kono plans to exchange views on possible financial assistance and technological support.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to visit Japan this weekend after meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang.

Kono hopes Japan can play a proactive role in the denuclearization process through cooperation with the US and the IAEA.

The US administration says the worsening situation in Syria will be a key issue at the summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin later this month.

Syrian government forces backed by Russia stepped up their attacks in the anti-government forces-held southwest part of the country on June 19th. The intense fighting has displaced an estimated 270,000 people.

US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters on Tuesday that the United States is extremely concerned about the situation.

Nauert said there are ongoing airstrikes, some humanitarian aid has been stopped, and that the situation is not safe.

She said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov have discussed the matter on the phone.

Nauert added that the United States intends to discuss a ceasefire with Russia, Syria and Jordan.

Trump and Putin are scheduled to meet in the Finnish capital of Helsinki on July 16th.

An idle nuclear power plant in Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo, has effectively cleared a safety test. But it must pass 2 more screenings before it turns 40 years old in November to avoid the prospect of decommissioning.

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority finalized a draft assessment of the Tokai No.2 plant in a meeting on Wednesday.

During the meeting, an explanation was made that the plant operator has secured funding of about 1.6 billion dollars needed to boost safety. All 5 commissioners from the nuclear watchdog who attended agreed that the plant meets the new regulations introduced after the 2011 Fukushima accident.

The Tokai No.2 plant is located about 110 kilometers from central Tokyo, and is the closest one to the capital. About 960,000 people live within 30 kilometers of the plant -- the most for a nuclear plant in the country.

Its reactor-cooling equipment was partially damaged by a tsunami that was triggered by the 2011 earthquake.

The plant operator, the Japan Atomic Power Company, submitted an application for screening to the nuclear regulator in 2014, hoping to restart operation.

The boiling-water reactor at the plant is the same type as those at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

This is Japan's second nuclear reactor of this type that has effectively cleared screening, following the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata Prefecture.

The nuclear regulator will officially approve the final assessment after gathering public opinion.

Japanese electronics maker Hitachi and its business partner plan to start full-scale clinical tests to confirm the viability of a cancer screening method that uses worms.

The firms aim to put the method into practical use in 2020.

Hitachi and venture firm Hirotsu Bio Science have been developing the method using worms called nematodes for 3 years.

The companies said clinical tests will be held at 17 medical institutions at home and abroad.

The one-millimeter-long worms have a sense of smell as good as that of dogs.

The nematodes move toward urine of cancer patients and away from that of healthy people.

The companies say the screening method can achieve accuracy of up to 90 percent in detecting early-stage cancer.

Such screening used to take a long time because worms attracted to urine samples were counted manually through visual checks using microscopes.

The companies say they have now come up with an image analysis device that allows automated counting, dramatically cutting the time and labor required for the process.

Takaaki Hirotsu, who heads the venture firm, said the cost of screening could be reduced to only dozens of dollars, raising sharply the probability of early detection of cancer.

French sommeliers and food specialists have taken part in a contest to choose the best brands of sake.

The Japanese drink is increasingly popular in France. Food lovers say it goes well with healthy vegetable dishes. Last year, sake exports to France exceeded 1.8 million dollars, marking a 3-fold increase over 5 years.

Sommeliers from top French hotels tasted 650 brands of sake at this year's event in May. The contest was first held last year.

This year's winners were announced in Paris on Tuesday.

The top prize went to sake made by the Nakano Brewery in Oita Prefecture. Later, sake fans were invited to sample the event's 100 prize-winning brands.

The brewery's president, Atsuyuki Nakano, said it means a lot to be acknowledged in Paris, the world's culinary capital.

Sommelier Xavier Thuizat, who headed the contest jury, said such events are necessary to provide customers with high-quality sake.

An international airport near Tokyo plans to accept more business jets during the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The operator of Narita Airport says it expects more such planes to fly into the country during the games.

Small jets are often used by business executives and wealthy individuals. Narita currently sees an average of 2 such aircraft land or take off there per day.

The number of parking spaces for business jets at Narita is to be more than tripled to 64 during the period. Additional security and immigration gates are also planned.

Some taxiways are to be closed, but the operator says this would not affect other passengers.

The firm says it will be ready to meet wide-ranging demand to help make the games a success.
