Rain in some parts of Nagasaki Prefecture reached an intensity seen only once every few decades.
The cities of Tsushima and Goto received more than 100 millimeters of precipitation during a one-hour period on Saturday morning.

There have been numerous reports of landslides.
Officials say there is a continuing risk of floods, high winds and more landslides.

Police say a man suspected of an arson attack that killed dozens of people at an animation studio in Kyoto may have held a grudge against the firm.

Shinji Aoba allegedly started the fire at the Kyoto Animation studio on Thursday morning by pouring a flammable liquid at the entrance to the first floor and igniting it. The death toll has risen to 34.

Police say when officers apprehended the suspect, he shouted that he started the blaze because the studio stole material from his novel.

An eyewitness says the man yelled something about the studio stealing a plot from his novel, and that he also demanded to talk to the president of the company.

Police say the suspect has never worked for the company. They say they cannot confirm that he has ever published a novel.

Aoba was transferred on Saturday morning from a hospital in Kyoto City to another facility in Osaka Prefecture that specializes in treatment for burns.

Police have been joined by the president of Kyoto Animation, Hideaki Hatta, for inspections of the burnt-out building.

Hatta told reporters that he has never heard of the suspect, and that the suspect had not previously visited the studio.

He said he does not remember seeing any email to the company bearing the suspect's name.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps says it has seized a British-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, for what it described as a violation of international maritime regulations.

The corps made the announcement on Friday through Iran's state-run broadcaster. It said the ship had been transferred to the country's maritime authorities.

The development comes amid heightened tensions between the two countries.

The British territory of Gibraltar detained an Iranian tanker on July 4 on suspicion of transporting oil to Syria, in breach of European Union sanctions.

Iran denies the vessel was headed for Syria, and has demanded its release.
Iran's seizure of a British-flagged tanker is seen as a retaliation.

In Britain, reports say the government's emergency committee is meeting over the incident.

British media quoted Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt as saying Iranian authorities have also seized a Liberian-flagged tanker. He said the participants in the meeting will review what they can do to secure the release of the two vessels.

Hunt reportedly said Britain's ambassador in Tehran was in contact with Iran's foreign ministry to resolve the situation. He added that his country was working closely with its international partners.

But Iranian media quoted a military official as saying the Liberian-flagged tanker was only given a warning. The British firm operating the ship said the vessel and its crew have been released.

The US government has held a meeting with foreign diplomats to discuss its plan to form a coalition to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump's administration announced the initiative earlier this month amid growing tensions with Iran.

Officials from countries, including Japan, attended the closed-door gathering at the State Department on Friday.

Details of the meeting are not known, but State and Defense Department officials are believed to have explained the need to form a coalition, and what roles participating countries are expected to play.

The political minister at the Japanese Embassy in Washington, Keiichi Ichikawa, told reporters that he can only say that he will brief Tokyo on the talks.

Diplomatic sources say the US and other countries plan to hold another meeting on Thursday in Florida to continue discussions.

Observers say that by forming the coalition, the US apparently intends to enhance monitoring around the Strait of Hormuz, and step up international pressure on Iran.

Iran has reacted sharply against the US plan and asked countries not to join the coalition.

A tour guide on a cruise ship in Japan's northern prefecture of Hokkaido has recorded footage of a rare white orca off the Shiretoko Peninsula, a World Natural Heritage site.

The orca was spotted on Friday afternoon while the ship was on a sightseeing tour of marine creatures. It was among a school of orca in waters around seven kilometers off the town of Rausu.

The guide said the ship came within range of about 50 meters of the animals at one time. Video shows the white orca bobbing out the water surface several times.

In May, researchers captured images of a white orca in waters off the same town. Scientists said it was likely the first time that such an orca had been sighted in Japan.

Researcher Shigeo Saino says white orcas have been spotted mainly in waters off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula and surrounding areas. He says sightings of white orcas occur only once in several years.
