Businesses began reopening across parts of Japan on Saturday, as dozens of prefectures entered their first weekend since being released from a state of emergency for the coronavirus pandemic.

The government announced on Thursday that it was lifting the measure in 39 of the nation's 47 prefectures.

In the northeastern prefecture of Miyagi, department store Sendai Mitsukoshi reopened on Saturday after closing all sections apart from its food floor for about a month.

Employees are wearing masks throughout the store, which has special cameras installed at the entrance to monitor body temperatures. Disinfectant is also freely available to customers.

A woman in her 70s said she's relieved that her favorite shop is open again.

In Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo, major shopping complex Aeon Mall Takasaki has also reopened its doors. The store is limiting the number of shoppers who can be inside at any time, and plans to close about two hours earlier than usual.

The western prefecture of Osaka is still subject to the state of emergency, but the prefectural government is no longer asking some businesses to remain closed.

Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street in Kita Ward is drawing more people than it has on recent weekends.

The owner of a restaurant in the area said he's grateful that he can now open until 10 p.m. He said he'll comply with physical distancing rules by setting tables sufficiently far apart.

Austria and Germany came a step closer to resuming normal life on Friday, as restaurants and bars were allowed to open for the first time since coronavirus lockdown measures went into effect two months ago.

A restaurant in Vienna that specializes in a boiled beef dish called Tafelspitz was fully booked for the occasion.

Management is complying with physical distancing rules by setting tables one meter or more apart and limiting the number of people per table to four adults.

The owner said it felt like he was opening for the first time. He said restaurants play an important role in society.

In Berlin, people gathered at a beer garden in the city center to celebrate the easing of restrictions.

One customer said it was great to be relaxing under the sun for the first time in two months.

The owner said he's being careful to follow practices that will prevent infections. He said he's happy he can pour beer for his customers again.

Many people in the neighboring countries remain fearful of contracting the virus at restaurants. The anxiety has stopped some businesses from reopening.

Businesses in the US state of New York have partially reopened under the first step of a plan to ease restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus.

Operations in the construction and manufacturing sectors resumed in some rural areas on Friday.

Under the four-phase plan, each region in New York must meet certain criteria regarding the number of new hospitalizations and bed availability.

The reopening of retail stores, restaurants and financial services will occur in the later phases. Activities in the central part of the state are still heavily restricted.

Maryland and Virginia also allowed some businesses to restart operations on Friday. It means 47 states have reopened to a certain extent.

However, there have been more than 15,000 new coronavirus cases confirmed in the US every day this week.

In the state of California, some retail businesses resumed on May 8. They include supermarkets, pharmacies and bookshops.

In Los Angeles, a florist reopened for the first time in about two months, but with limits to how transactions take place. The owner said sales have dropped by 90 percent compared to before the outbreak.

US President Donald Trump says his administration will fast-track efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine by year-end.

Trump announced the project at the White House on Friday.

He said the objective is to "finish developing and then to manufacture and distribute a proven coronavirus vaccine as fast as possible." He said, "We would love to see if we can do it prior to the end of the year."

The president boasted the effort is unlike anything the US has seen since the Manhattan project, referring to the World War Two program to build the first atomic bomb.

Trump pledged full financial support for vaccine development and to simplify procedures for regulatory approvals.

But scientists have expressed skepticism about the prospect. Most expect vaccine development to take until next year at the earliest.
