The Japanese government is considering a request from the US to divert some of its imports of liquefied natural gas to Europe.

The administration of US President Joe Biden wants to prevent disruptions to Europe's supply amid tensions surrounding Ukraine.

Europe gets LNG from Russia through pipelines. The US and its European allies have suggested they will impose sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine.

Some observers say sanctions could prompt Russia to reduce supplies to Europe.

The Japanese government has been carefully studying the request from the US. LNG accounts for 39 percent of the electricity generated in Japan, which is more than any other energy source.

Furthermore, utility companies in Japan have been trying to secure more than the usual amounts of LNG to prepare for a possible increase in demand this winter.

Cambodia says the Association of Southeast Asian Nations has asked Myanmar to send a non-political representative to the bloc's foreign ministerial meeting later this month, instead of its military-appointed minister.

A Cambodian foreign ministry spokesperson said on Thursday that ASEAN members had not agreed to invite Myanmar's military-appointed foreign minister. Cambodia holds the bloc's rotating chair.

He cited little progress on the "Five-Point Consensus" concerning Myanmar's situation following the military coup in February last year. The consensus was agreed to at an ASEAN summit-level meeting last April attended by Myanmar's military leader.

The document calls for, among other things, the immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar and dialogue among all parties concerned mediated by an ASEAN special envoy.

Cambodia had been working to invite foreign ministers from all ASEAN countries to a meeting planned to begin on February 16.

But Cambodia is believed to have suspended the effort in the face of opposition from nations such as Indonesia and Malaysia. They argue that ASEAN should maintain its stern posture toward Myanmar's military.

ASEAN did not invite Myanmar's military leader to its summit last October. The military responded by not sending a representative.

Four candidates in South Korea's presidential election scheduled for next month have clashed in their first TV debate, which touched on foreign policy, the economy and other topics.

The session was hosted on Thursday by three broadcasters, including KBS.

It brought together Lee Jae-myung of the ruling Democratic Party and Yoon Suk-yeol of the main opposition People Power Party. Opinion polls show Lee and Yoon running neck and neck.

The other participants were Sim Sang-jung of the progressive Justice Party and Ahn Cheol-soo of the minor opposition People's Party.

Yoon, a former top prosecutor, said the administration of President Moon Jae-in has allowed relations with the United States and Japan to falter, while it has been submissive to China and North Korea. He added that he will prioritize restoring ties with the US and Japan.

Lee, a former governor of Gyeonggi province, stressed the importance of balanced diplomacy, adding that relations with the US, an ally, should be further enhanced.

He said it is preferable to keep ties with China as friendly as possible because it is impossible to withdraw from the economic relationship. But he added he would stand up to China when necessary.

Several more TV debates are scheduled in the run-up to the March 9 election.
