The United States has decided to send about 3,000 additional troops to Poland amid growing military tensions over Ukraine.

US defense officials disclosed the plan on Friday.

The move is aimed at bolstering defense capabilities in eastern Europe. The US is sending troops to Poland, Romania and Germany.

President Joe Biden's administration earlier decided to send 1,700 troops to Poland, mostly members of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The additional troops, also Airborne personnel, will leave Fort Bragg in a few days and join the first unit in Poland.

The latest decision will bring the number of US troops dispatched to Europe to about 5,000. A senior defense official stressed that the move will reassure NATO allies and contribute to a wide range of contingencies.

The US is on high alert against Russia's possible invasion of Ukraine. A White House senior official said on Friday that the invasion could begin at any time, including during the Beijing Winter Olympics.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has reiterated the alliance's readiness to defend its eastern members amid rising tensions along the Russia-Ukraine border.

Stoltenberg said NATO is strengthening its presence in Eastern Europe.

On Friday, he visited a military base in Romania that is due to host an additional 1,000 US troops. Italian and German fighter jets are already deployed there for air patrol activities.

Stoltenberg says Spanish fighter jets are expected to arrive in Bulgaria on Friday.

NATO defense ministers are due to meet next week to discuss ways of further bolstering defenses.

US President Joe Biden has hosted an online meeting of transatlantic leaders to discuss the crisis in Ukraine.

The meeting took place on Friday with Biden and the leaders of Canada, the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, the UK, and NATO.

Russia has amassed about 100,000 troops along the border with Ukraine. It is also holding military drills with soldiers in neighboring Belarus.

Biden told the leaders to prepare for any scenario. He warned Moscow that military escalation will come with "massive consequences and severe economic costs."

The leaders say they are still pushing for a diplomatic solution to the crisis, but they warn an attack could happen "any day now."

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that, despite speculation that an invasion would only happen after the Olympics, it could begin during the Games.

Russian officials have denied that they have any plans to invade. However, Sullivan warned Americans in Ukraine to evacuate as soon as they can, and he says an invasion would likely start with airstrikes and missile attacks.

He said the leaders will continue cooperation among themselves and various organizations, including the UN.

A Kremlin spokesperson has announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will talk on the phone with Biden on Saturday. Dmitry Peskov says the US initiated the call.

With tensions rising over the Ukraine crisis, one of its athletes at the Beijing Winter Olympics has used his platform to call for peace.

After a run in Friday's skeleton event, Vladyslav Heraskevych showed the TV cameras a sign in the colors of his country's flag, bearing the words "No War In Ukraine." The 23-year-old from the capital city of Kyiv finished in 18th place.

After the competition, he reportedly described the news of guns, weapons and armies around Ukraine, as "not OK." Heraskevych added that, like normal people, he does not want war and that he would "fight for peace."

International Olympic Committee rules ban "political, religious or racial propaganda" in Olympic sites, venues or other areas.

However, the IOC said Heraskevych was making a "general call for peace," so would face no repercussions.

The United States says it will strengthen cooperation with allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region in a wide range of areas to counter China's growing influence.

President Joe Biden's administration unveiled its Indo-Pacific strategy on Friday. It described China as seeking to become "the world's most influential power."

The administration said that Beijing is "combining its economic, diplomatic, military, and technological might as it pursues a sphere of influence in the Indo-Pacific."

The document said it is important for the US to increase its presence and cooperation in the region. It said the US will enhance connections through frameworks such as the Quad partnership with Japan, Australia and India, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN.

The plan also includes strengthening ties with Taiwan, which China claims as its territory.

The document said the US will work with allies and partners in the region to deepen their interoperability to deter China, and launch a new regional economic partnership in early 2022.

Sources say the Biden administration initially planned to release the Indo-Pacific strategy around last summer, but it was delayed due to increased tensions over Ukraine and other factors.

The foreign ministers of Japan and Australia have agreed to deepen their countries' bilateral security and defense cooperation.

Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and his Australian counterpart, Marise Payne, talked for about an hour in Melbourne on Saturday.

With China in mind, the ministers shared the view that the security environment surrounding both Japan and Australia is becoming more severe.

They also agreed to work to swiftly draw up a new joint declaration on security cooperation. The two countries' leaders pledged last month to issue such a declaration.

The ministers confirmed that Japan and Australia will speed up their domestic procedures to enact their reciprocal access agreement at an early date. The deal facilitates joint drills between Japan's Self-Defense Forces and Australia's military.

Hayashi and Payne also agreed that their countries will work together on recovery efforts in the Pacific island nation of Tonga, following a huge undersea volcanic eruption in January.

Hayashi arrived in Australia on Friday to attend meetings including foreign ministerial talks of the Quad framework, consisting of Japan, the United States, Australia and India.

He is scheduled to join a trilateral meeting with his US and South Korean counterparts in Hawaii later this weekend.

The administration of US President Joe Biden has decided to use part of the frozen assets of Afghanistan's central bank in the United States to extend humanitarian assistance for the Afghan people.

Biden signed an executive order on Friday in view of a deepening humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

The order will block property of Da Afghanistan Bank, or DAB, held in the US by US financial institutions and require them to transfer the property into an account held at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

DAB assets worth 7 billion dollars have been held in the US since the Taliban retook power last year.

Biden administration officials say half of the assets, or 3.5 billion dollars, will be used for the benefit of the Afghan people and for Afghanistan's future.

The officials say a trust fund will be established within several months and that consultations will be held to decide how to use the money.

The administration says the remaining sum of the frozen assets, or 3.5 billion dollars, will be kept in the US so that it can be used for payouts for the victims of the September 11 attacks and their relatives who are seeking compensation from the Taliban in federal court.

The Taliban has lashed out at the US move. Taliban spokesperson Mohammad Naeem tweeted on Friday that stealing the blocked funds of Afghanistan by the United States and its seizure of those funds shows the lowest level of humanity of a country and a nation.

US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has announced it is postponing its application with the US Food and Drug Administration to expand the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for children aged six months through four years.

In making the announcement on Friday, Pfizer said it will wait until data becomes available from an ongoing clinical study on the efficacy of a third dose of the vaccine for children in the age group.

Earlier this month, Pfizer began the procedure to apply for the expansion of the vaccine's emergency use for children under five years of age. The FDA said it would start assessment of the two-dose inoculation for those children.

Pfizer announced in December that preliminary data showed that the immune response generated one month after the second shot in children two to four years old was inferior to the response in adults. The firm has continued its examination into the efficacy of a third shot.

Amid the spread of the Omicron variant, the United States has seen a spike in cases where young children not eligible for vaccination have developed serious symptoms after becoming infected.

Some experts say the vaccination program should be quickly expanded to cover young children. But others say the authorities are in too much of a rush in their effort to approve the expansion.

An FDA expert said it makes sense to wait for the safety and efficacy data on all three doses to be available before making a decision.
