The US military says its first troops aimed at reinforcing defense capabilities in Eastern Europe arrived in Poland on Saturday.

The US administration of President Joe Biden decided to dispatch about 3,000 troops to Poland, Romania and Germany amid a Russian military build-up on Ukraine's border.

More US troops are being dispatched to Europe.

About 100 members of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, boarded a transport plane for Poland on Saturday.

Last month, 8,500 service members were also put on alert to deploy to Europe if necessary.

The United States is believed to be dispatching troops to countries around Ukraine to put pressure on Russia. Moscow is criticizing the US move, saying it will further raise tensions in the region.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Erdogan wrote on Twitter on Saturday that he and his wife had tested positive for COVID-19 and are experiencing slight symptoms of the Omicron variant.

The Turkish president met his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday in Kyiv amid Russia's military buildup along its border with Ukraine.

Erdogan also expressed his intention to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to Turkey in an effort to become a mediator to facilitate the easing of tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

While Erdogan tweeted that he would continue to work at home, it seems difficult for him to meet the Russian president in person for the time being.

Turkey is scrambling to deal with a record spike in the number of coronavirus cases. Its daily tally of new infections topped 111,000 on Friday for the first time.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed new senior aides following allegations that parties were repeatedly held at 10 Downing Street during lockdowns for the coronavirus pandemic.

Johnson announced on Saturday that he had appointed former Brexit minister Steve Barclay as his new chief of staff.

The initial results of a government investigation into the party allegations were released last week, and a police investigation is underway. Five of his aides resigned in protest.

Johnson is also being criticized for remarks he made in Parliament. He is hoping to turn around his scandal-tainted administration.

Johnson's head of policy resigned in protest on Thursday. Munira Mirza had been supporting Johnson for more than 10 years since he was Mayor of London.

Calls for the prime minister's resignation have kept coming from his own Conservative Party. Some Conservative lawmakers are demanding a vote of confidence in his leadership.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth marks the 70th anniversary of her ascension to the throne on Sunday.

The Queen assumed the throne on February 6 in 1952 at the age of 25. She is the country's longest-serving monarch.

As a symbol of unity of the United Kingdom, she has visited other nations, both inside and outside the British Commonwealth. In 1975, she visited Japan and deepened her relations with the Japanese Imperial family.

In recent years, the Queen has used social media in an effort to promote a royal family more accessible to the public.

She has spoken online to healthcare workers and volunteers as concern grew in society amid the coronavirus pandemic. She called for unity of people in a televised speech.

In an opinion poll conducted last year, 81 percent of respondents aged 65 or older said the monarchy should be preserved. But only 31 percent of those aged between 18 and 24 said so.

University of Buckingham Professor of History Jane Ridley described Queen Elizabeth as an important figure to Britons, calling her just like their grandmothers.

She also noted that the royal family is facing a challenge to become one fit for a new era while maintaining support from the public.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has told Chinese leaders that he expects the UN human rights representative to be allowed to make a "credible visit" to the country's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Guterres met with President Xi Jinping on Saturday during a visit to the country for the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing on Friday.

The US, Britain and several other countries have not sent any government officials to the Games as part of a "diplomatic boycott" over China's alleged human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

But a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said late last month that China extended an invitation to High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet what he said was "a long time ago."

The spokesperson said China welcomes for her trip to Xinjiang, stressing the purpose of the visit is to "promote exchange and cooperation."

The UN noted that Guterres made the comment so that the visit will not be a mere formality.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that Xi stressed that his country will continue to cooperate with the UN in its effort to tackle issues, including the pandemic.

But the ministry did not say whether the one-on-one meeting touched on the situation in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

A Uyghur athlete who lit the Olympic cauldron at the Beijing Games has finished in 43rd place in a cross-country skiing event.

Dinigeer Yilamujiang is from Altay in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. She was one of two final torchbearers at Friday's opening ceremony, alongside a male athlete from the Han majority ethnic group.

The US and several other countries have not sent any government officials to the Games as part of a "diplomatic boycott" against China's alleged human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

In Saturday's women's 15-kilometer cross-country skiathlon in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, the 20-year-old Dinigeer Yilamujiang finished about 6 minutes behind Norway's Therese Johaug who won gold.

Reporters were waiting to interview her after the race but she did not appear in the mixed zone.

An online outlet that specializes in Olympic coverage wrote that she "makes headlines as a symbol but not as a skier."

The Washington Post quoted an official with a human rights group as saying the Chinese government had exploited the Uyghur athlete and called for stronger action against the country.

Two Japanese medal hopefuls have fallen short in their quests for gold.

Iwabuchi Reira finished in 5th and Murase Kokomo 10th in the snowboard women's Slopestyle.

The event features 3 runs, with competitors ranked according to their best scores.

Iwabuchi was in 4th after her second run, raising hopes for a podium finish. But she missed a landing on her third attempt and was unable to improve her position.

The 17-year-old Murase had an impressive showing in Saturday's preliminary round, finishing in second. But she struggled on Sunday, slipping on every one of her runs.

New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski Synnott finished in first, winning her country's first ever gold at the Olympic Winter Games.

A strong winter pressure pattern and a cold air mass above Japan have brought heavy snow, especially along the Sea of Japan coast from Hokkaido down to the Chugoku region.

Some areas of Niigata and Nagano prefectures got more than 80 centimeters of snow in the 24 hours through Sunday morning.

As of 9 a.m. on Sunday, snow accumulation of 342 centimeters was recorded in the town of Tsunan in Niigata Prefecture, and 262 centimeters in the village of Nozawaonsen in Nagano Prefecture.

In the city of Sapporo in the country's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, 108 centimeters of snow was on the ground. The last time the city saw snow deeper than one meter was in March 2014.

Up to 65 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in the 24 hours through Monday morning in Niigata Prefecture, 60 centimeters in the prefectures of Nagano and Gifu, as well as the northern Kansai region.

Officials warn that the strong cold air mass is expected to move across to the Pacific Coast, bringing heavy snow to the plains in the Tokai region and elsewhere.

Weather officials warn the snow could cause traffic disruptions and power outages. They are calling for caution against snow falling from rooftops and avalanches.

Tanaka finished second among the 20 finalists on Saturday. She is from Osaka Prefecture and attends a ballet school in Switzerland.

She performed to tunes from Giselle in the classical category and received a big round of applause from the audience.
