South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that North Korea launched 8 short-range ballistic missiles eastward toward the sea on Sunday from 9:08 am to 9:43 am.

South Korea said it will convene an emergency national security meeting.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio condemned Pyongyang's latest move.

He said, "North Korea has repeatedly launched ballistic missiles, including new ICBMs, at high frequency since the beginning of this year. A series of North Korean actions threaten the peace and stability of the region and the international community, and cannot be tolerated."

North Korea has launched missiles 17 times this year. Kishida added he has already lodged a protest with Pyongyang.

South Korea says the missiles were fired from several locations including Sunan, North Korea.

The Japanese prime minister says the missiles apparently fell into the Sea of Japan, outside the country's exclusive economic zone.

The South Korean and the US military have just concluded a three-day joint drill on Saturday. It was the first time in 4 years and 7 months that they used a nuclear powered aircraft carrier in a joint drill.

The missile launch is believed to be part of North Korea's reaction to the drill as well as to the close collaboration of the US, Japan and South Korea.

The Ukrainian president has condemned Russia for destroying a historic monastery in the eastern region of Donetsk. Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the international community to expel Russia from the UN cultural agency UNESCO.

Zelenskyy wrote on social media that no other country in Europe has destroyed so many monuments of cultural heritage since World War Two as Russia did in its invasion of Ukraine.

In the neighboring region of Luhansk, the situation is direr as the Russian military has boasted that it dealt a fatal blow to Severodonetsk -- Ukraine's last stronghold in the region.

Luhansk Governor Serhiy Haidai said on Saturday that most of the city has been taken by the full-scale Russian assault launched on it.

He added that Russian forces blew up bridges to prevent Ukraine's bringing in military reinforcements.

The Russian military said on Saturday that their strikes caused Ukrainian forces to lose a maximum of 90 percent of their units.

The international community is concerned about global food shortages as the war stopped grain exports from Ukraine.

The Russian military says 70 foreign ships are stuck at six ports along the Black Sea including Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Odesa. It claims that ships cannot move for fear of shelling by Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine has blamed Moscow for the blockade, saying Russians left naval mines at sea.

A traditional embroidered shirt worn by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has fetched 100,000 dollars at an auction to help his country defend and rebuild itself.

The auction was held in Washington on Friday, which marked 100 days since Russia launched its invasion.
The Ukrainian government was among the organizers.

Zelenskyy, in a video message, thanked the participants. He said that the event is not only for fundraising but it is also one way to prove to Russia that evil will not win.

Lots included the national flag of Ukraine with Zelenskyy's autograph and fragments of the world's largest cargo plane that was destroyed in a Russian attack.

The president launched a crowdfunding site in May to collect charitable donations for Ukraine. It says more than 50 million dollars have so far been donated.

Authorities in Hong Kong have again prevented an annual vigil for victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident, which had been held for years in the Chinese territory.

Tens of thousands of people had gathered for an annual vigil at Victoria Park and lit candles in remembrance of victims of the deadly incident.

On Saturday evening, police officers sealed off access to the park and checked people's belongings in a nearby shopping area.

Since 2020, Hong Kong authorities have banned the annual gathering, citing measures being taken for the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2020, China imposed a national security law on Hong Kong aimed at criminalizing anti-Beijing protests.

No groups applied for permission to hold an event for this year's anniversary after an organizing group of the annual vigil was forced to disband last year. Many pro-democracy activists have been arrested or charged.

The annual commemoration was viewed as a symbol of Hong Kong's freedom of speech and assembly guaranteed under the "one country, two systems" framework.

A man who had taken part in the vigil every year said that it's extremely difficult not to be able to say what he wants to say and that he has to hold his feelings back.

A civic group in Taiwan unveiled a replica of the "Pillar of Shame" statue honoring the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident on its 33rd anniversary on Saturday.

The original sculpture created by a Danish artist had been on the University of Hong Kong's campus since 1998. Memorial services were held in front of the statue every year.

However, the university removed the statue last December following a series of arrests under the territory's national security law that is designed to clamp down on anti-government activities.

With permission from the Danish creator, the civic group in Taiwan has reproduced the statue using a 3-D printer.

About 500 participants, including Hong Kong people living in Taiwan, observed a silent prayer for 64 seconds from 8:09 p.m. that represented June 4, 1989.

The deadly incident unfolded after the Chinese military opened fire on pro-democracy students and other demonstrators who had gathered around the square.

Beijing says the incident left 319 people dead. But critics say the fatalities could be several thousand.

The organizers of Saturday's event said military aircraft and vessels of the same government which cracked down on students and deprived Hong Kong of its freedom are now deployed around Taiwan.

They said that if Taiwan people want citizens of other countries to think about Taiwan, they should regard what happened to those oppressed by the Chinese Communist Party as what they will experience.

Japanese Foreign Ministry officials say a Chinese ship was spotted releasing what was likely observation equipment into the sea in Japan's exclusive economic zone near the southern prefecture of Okinawa.

The officials said a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted the research vessel on Saturday about 73 kilometers north of Ishigaki Island.

The ministry lodged a protest with Beijing through diplomatic channels, saying that if the country was conducting a maritime survey without Japan's consent, it would be extremely regrettable. It said if that were the case, China should immediately stop the survey.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20220605_07/

The number of visas issued by Japan last year marked a record low since statistics became available in 1999.

The Foreign Ministry says embassies and consulates issued about 90,000 visas in 2021. That is only about one percent of the figure from 2019, when a record-high of over 8.2 million visas were issued.

The significant decrease was largely due to the country's border control measures against the coronavirus pandemic.

Most of the visas were granted to foreign technical trainees, or cases based on humanitarian grounds.

By nationality, Vietnam topped the list with more than 15,000 visas, followed by China with over 12,000.

The Japanese government began easing border controls in phases in March. It plans to accept more new arrivals, while keeping the spread of the coronavirus under control.
