South Korea's defense minister says his country is ready to engage in active dialogue with Japan to strengthen their alliance with the United States to counter North Korea.

Lee Jong-sup delivered a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an Asian security forum meeting in Singapore, on Sunday.

He expressed deep concerns about North Korea's missile launches and a possible 7th nuclear test, saying its nuclear and missile development is beyond a threat.

Referring to defense cooperation with Japan, Lee pointed out there are many unresolved issues between the two countries.

But he said South Korea is ready to normalize security cooperation between Seoul and Tokyo and to strengthen trilateral cooperation with the US.

He said the defense cooperation with Japan will be centered around the North's nuclear and missile threats.
He added that the South will step up security cooperation through senior-level talks and sharing information as well as missile-attack warnings.

South Korea, Japan and the United States agreed on Saturday to resume joint exercises to deal with the North's ballistic missile launches.

South Korea has been working to strengthen the three-way alliance since President Yoon Suk-yeol took office last month.

China's defense minister says the country will fight to the finish if someone tries to separate it from Taiwan, an apparent warning against the United States stepping up its involvement in Taiwan.

Wei Fenghe delivered a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an Asian security forum meeting in Singapore, on Sunday.

The minister said Taiwan falls under China's internal affairs and unification with Taiwan must be achieved at all costs.

He noted "peaceful" unification is the greatest wish for the Chinese people, and his country is doing its utmost efforts toward that ambition.

Wei pointed out that certain countries run counter to the principle and commitment to "one China," and tolerate the movement toward separating Taiwan from China.

He stressed that the Chinese military's determination and enormous capability to protect the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity should not be overlooked.

The minister warned the US to stop smearing China, or trying to contain it or interfering in the country's internal affairs.

Wei said the militaries of the two countries should avoid making wrong decisions while enhancing each other's trust. He said both sides should control risks to prevent friction and confrontations.

He expressed hope that Beijing and Washington will build a healthy and stable bilateral relationship.

The officer in charge of the US Indo-Pacific Command says the security situation in the region and beyond is experiencing potentially the most dangerous period since World War Two.

Admiral John Aquilino made the remark in a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an Asian security forum meeting in Singapore, on Saturday.

The meeting has been underway since Friday with defense ministers and other government officials from Asian and Western countries taking part.

During Saturday's speech, Admiral Aquilino pointed out that China has been taking destabilizing actions throughout the Indo-Pacific, including coercion and unsafe intercepts against the US allies and partners.
He also noted that North Korea's nuclear and missile tests continue to destabilize the region and threaten the livelihood of all nations.

With China in mind, the admiral indicated the need of "a resolve to prevent conflict through maintaining open lines of communication to ensure that competition does not escalate into crisis".

China's Defense Minister Wei Fenghe is scheduled to deliver a speech on Sunday, the last day of the meeting.

Protesters have gathered in hundreds of places in the United States calling for a stricter gun control as mass shootings continue to take place in the country.

In May, an 18-year-old suspect shot and killed 10 people at the supermarket in New York state.

Later in the month 19 children and two adults were killed by an 18-year-old in an elementary school in Texas.

Thousands of people came to Washington on Saturday and demanded that lawmakers approve gun control bills.

A former student of a Florida high school where 17 people were killed in a gun attack in 2018 called on senators for immediate action on gun control.

The US House recently passed bills regulating gun sales including raising the age limit to buy certain highly lethal weapons. But the Republican controlled Senate is unlikely to pass the bills.

One of the protesters said that loud noises frighten her and that guns have to be controlled as she is tired of living in fear.

The Philippines' Foreign Ministry has issued a diplomatic protest about Chinese fishing boats operating illegally in its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea and Chinese government boats for shadowing Philippine transport ships.

In a statement released on Friday, the ministry reported that Chinese fishing boats illegally operated around a reef in the Spratly Islands, which is in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.

The ministry said the boats also blocked navigation by other ships by spreading fishing nets and floating buoys.

The ministry added that private transport boats hired by the Philippine government were also shadowed by Chinese coast guard vessels while navigating toward the reef.

The ministry says, "China has no right to fish, monitor or interfere with the Philippines' legitimate activities therein." It urged the Chinese side to comply with international law.

The reef is nearly 200 kilometers west of the Philippines' western island of Palawan.

An arbitration tribunal in The Hague in 2016 rejected China's claim on almost all of the South China Sea and acknowledged the reef as being within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.

Last Thursday, the ministry issued a separate protest relating to more than 50 Chinese fishing boats that had stayed for nearly two months in a different part of the South China Sea, urging them to leave the zone immediately.

Key words : evacuation order lift katsurao

Residents of part of a district near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant designated as a "difficult-to-return" zone have been allowed back in for the first time since the 2011 disaster.

A total of more than 300 square kilometers of land in seven municipalities of Fukushima Prefecture is still designated as a "difficult-to-return" zone.

The Japanese government lifted the evacuation order for part of the village of Katsurao on Sunday morning.

Vehicles passed through on the road connecting the village and other areas after workers opened the barricade.

Residents of the Noyuki district, which makes up 20 percent of the village, were forced to leave their homes due to high levels of radiation after the accident.

About six percent of the district was prioritized as a special zone for decontamination work and infrastructure projects.

Village officials say 82 people from 30 households are registered as residents, but only eight people from four households have so far expressed an interest in returning.

Village Mayor Shinoki Hiroshi said residents have gone through various hardships in living as evacuees for more than 11 years. He added it is difficult to decide whether to return or not, but he hopes the area will be a place where people can live with peace of mind.

One resident, Hanzawa Fujio, had long prepared to return home. He had refurbished his house situated in the Noyuki district.

The 69 years old said he is happy about the lifting of the evacuation order, but said many challenges remain over how to rebuild the district.

He added that he is attached to the place and hopes to live peacefully while enjoying the changing of the seasons.

Scientists in Japan say that their research suggests that some members of the largest species of flying reptiles could fly only a short distance.

The reptiles, known as pterosaurs, lived in the dinosaur-era.

They lived on earth until 66 million years ago and were believed to fly by soaring on updrafts in the same way as modern large birds do.

A group of researchers from the graduate school of Nagoya University and other institutions conducted aerodynamic analysis of pterosaurs to see how they could soar and glide.

The researchers used a model and calculated the performance of soaring for different species based on estimated wing sizes and body weights. They compared the data to that of modern day birds.

The study suggests that Pteranodon with an estimated wingspan of five meters could soar high on updrafts and fly freely.

On the other hand, Quetzalcoatlus, the gigantic flying reptile, could not fly so far because of the extra load on their wings. Quetzalcoatlus is presumed to have a wingspan of 10 meters and weighed about 250 kilograms.

Researchers say Quetzalcoatlus and other similar sized pterosaurs were likely to spend most of their time on the ground.

Designated Assistant Professor Goto Yusuke said while people may imagine that large pterosaurs were freely flying around, that may not be the case.
He said the results of the analysis could prompt a rethinking of the ecology of pterosaurs.
