Japan's Defense Ministry says a Chinese naval ship sailed inside Japan's territorial waters off the southern prefecture of Kagoshima on Sunday morning.

Defense officials say the survey ship was first spotted traveling northward in Japan's contiguous zone south of the island of Yakushima around 12:50 a.m.

Officials say it entered Japan's territorial waters southwest of the island at around 2:30 a.m. and left the territorial waters around 4:10 a.m., heading west.

The officials say this is the first time this year that Chinese government ships have been sighted in Japan's territorial waters off the island of Yakushima. They say the Japanese government used diplomatic channels to convey its concerns to China.

Chinese naval vessels last year navigated inside Japan's territorial waters around the island five times.

The Defense Ministry is monitoring the activities of Chinese vessels and is analyzing the purpose of their navigations.

A White House official says a US fighter jet has shot down a high-altitude object flying over Alaska on the order of President Joe Biden, as it posed a "reasonable threat" to the safety of civilian aircraft.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby on Friday said the object went down on the far northeastern part of Alaska near the Canadian border.

Kirby said the object was the size of a small car and was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet, or about 12,000 meters.

He also said the object did not appear to be maneuverable and was at the mercy of the wind.

He added the object differed in size and altitude from the Chinese balloon that the US shot down last week.

Kirby said the origin and purpose of the unidentified object was unclear. The US military plans to recover the debris of the object.

The governments of Canada and the United States announced that an unidentified object was shot down by a US F-22 fighter jet in Canadian airspace.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on his Twitter account on Saturday that the object that violated Canadian airspace was shot down over the Yukon territory in the northwestern part of the country.

Later, Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand said at a news conference that an aircraft assigned to North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, successfully took down the high altitude airborne object.

She added that the cylindrical object "was flying at an altitude of approximately 40,000 feet" or about 12,000 meters.

The minister also explained that it was downed because it "posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight."

Anand added that "it appears to be a small cylindrical object and smaller than" the Chinese balloon that was downed off the US state of South Carolina.

She said that it was similar in appearance to the downed balloon, saying that Canadian forces will recover and analyze the wreckage.

US Department of Defense says NORAD detected the object over Alaska late Friday evening and that two fighter jets monitored and tracked it. NORAD is a US-Canada bi-national organization that defends North American airspace.

The Pentagon said in a statement that they continued to monitor on Saturday, together with Canadian fighter aircraft, as the object crossed into Canadian airspace.

It added that President Joe Biden authorized the downing of the object, following a call with the Canadian prime minister.

This follows the downing of another unidentified object by US forces on Friday over US territorial waters in northern part of the state of Alaska.

The death toll from Monday's earthquakes in Turkey and Syria has surpassed 28,000, while rescuers are increasingly concerned about the deteriorating security situation in the quake-hit area.

The magnitude 7.8 quake and the tremors that followed have resulted in the deaths of 24,617 people in Turkey and at least 3,575 people in Syria.

Rescue efforts continue.

On Saturday, a 5-year-old girl was pulled out of debris in the province of Kahramanmaras, southern Turkey, and a 7-month-old baby was saved in Hatay province, also in the country's south.

Emergency workers are facing the risk of secondary disasters in Hatay. One rescuer was clearing debris from a building that collapsed on Saturday.

Rescuers from Germany and Austria reportedly suspended operations in Hatay, citing security problems.

A German emergency official said that water and food supplies are running out, and reported that supermarkets and other stores had been destroyed.

The official added that the security situation there has gradually worsened as time has gone by since the quake.

The German rescue team says it will keep in touch with Turkish authorities and plans to resume operations as soon as they classify the situation as safe.

The number of foreign workers in Japan hit a record high of more than 1.82 million last year.

The labor ministry says there were 1,822,725 foreign workers as of the end of last October. That's an increase of about 95,504, or 5.5 percent, from a year earlier.

The figure has been on the rise since record-keeping began in 2007. The annual rate of increase fell to 0.2 percent in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it expanded again in the latest data.

By nationality, Vietnamese workers top the list at 462,384, or about a quarter of the total. Chinese nationals account for 385,848, followed by 206,050 people from the Philippines.

The number of technical trainees was 343,254, down 2.4 percent from a year earlier. The figure declined for the second year in a row, possibly due to anti-coronavirus border controls.

Labor ministry officials say that although the number of technical trainees has fallen, the overall rate of increase is recovering to pre-pandemic levels.

The officials say they will consult with companies to ensure that foreign nationals can work comfortably in Japan regardless of language or customs.

A Japanese court has released a video showing the final days of a Sri Lankan woman who died in detention.

Wishma Sandamali passed away at a detention center in Nagoya City in March 2021, after she complained that she felt ill.

The five-hour clip that is available for viewing is part of a 295-hour video. The footage was captured by a security camera mounted on the ceiling of the solitary cell in which she was detained. It was taken between February 22 and March 6, when she died.

The video shows Wishma lying on a bed, and she can be heard moaning. Conversations that she had with immigration guards and nurses can also be heard.

Last December, in response to the court's request, the Japanese government submitted as evidence five hours of video footage showing Wishma at the center.

The video can be watched at the court by anyone who completes the steps required to view official records from civil court cases.

The 33-year-old was being held for overstaying her visa.
Her family members filed a damages suit at the Nagoya district court. They are seeking compensation from the Japanese government. The bereaved family members say that the immigration authorities illegally held Wishma at the detention center and failed to provide her with adequate medical care, even though her condition became worse.

The government has argued that the actions taken by the authorities were not illegal.
