A senior US administration official says contact between the US and Chinese militaries is still shut down following the balloon incident but that diplomatic lines of communication remain open.

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby made the comments in a media briefing on Friday.

He said the military lines of communication are "unfortunately" not open after being curtailed in response to a visit to Taiwan by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed a visit to China this month after a suspected Chinese spy balloon flew across the US mainland.

The US military shot it down, drawing a sharp reaction from Beijing.

Kirby said the US side really would like to see the military lines of communication with China reopened.

He said President Joe Biden wants to have another conversation with his counterpart Xi Jinping when it is "appropriate."

The US government says it has successfully recovered almost all of the wreckage of a Chinese balloon that it shot down off the coast of the state of South Carolina on February 4.

The US military said it concluded the recovery efforts on Thursday, and the last of the balloon's debris was heading to an FBI laboratory in the state of Virginia for analysis.

The White House said that a significant amount of the debris had been recovered, including the payload structure, as well as "electronics and optics".

The US government plans to analyze them to try and figure out how the balloon worked and what it was capable of.

The US suspected the object was a Chinese spy balloon after it first began its flight over the US mainland before being shot down. China has criticized the downing of the balloon as an overreaction.

The US military also said on Friday that it had ended the search for the wreckage of two other flying objects that were shot down over the state of Alaska and Lake Huron, with nothing recovered. They are among three such objects that were shot down between February 10 and 12.

The US government said there is no indication that the three smaller aerial objects were part of China's intelligence collection efforts, but could be tied to commercial or research purposes by the private sector.

A British newspaper is reporting that a senior US Defense Department official is visiting Taiwan.

The Financial Times on Friday quoted sources as saying that Michael Chase, deputy assistant secretary of defense for China, had arrived in Taiwan.

He is expected to discuss security cooperation with officials there as Beijing increases its military pressure on Taiwan.

The newspaper says Chase is the first senior US defense official to travel to Taiwan since 2019, when a deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia visited during the Trump administration.

The paper says the Pentagon declined to comment on the trip. It quoted a Defense Department spokesperson as saying, "Our commitment to Taiwan is rock-solid and contributes to the maintenance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and within the region."

The US and China have been trading accusations over a balloon that recently passed over much of the US mainland.

Washington determined it to be a Chinese surveillance balloon and shot it down, calling the incursion a brazen violation of US sovereignty. Beijing reacted sharply.

Observers say the latest Taiwan visit could cause bilateral relations to deteriorate further.

A senior US government official has said about 9,000 fighters of the Russian military company Wagner Group have died in the fighting in Ukraine.

White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said, "We estimate now that Wagner has suffered more than 30,000 causalities, including approximately 9,000 killed in action."

Kirby said about half of the deaths have been concentrated in the period since mid-December, when fighting intensified in Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region. He added that about 90 percent of them are believed to be untrained convicts.

The UK defense ministry estimates that Russian troops and private military contractor Wagner Group forces have likely had 175,000 to 200,000 casualties since the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

The ministry said on Friday that the number likely includes approximately 40,000 to 60,000 killed.

It added, "The Russian casualty rate has significantly increased since September 2022 when 'partial mobilisation' was imposed."

Russia is believed to be keeping up its military offensive on various parts of Ukraine.

Ukraine says that a Russian missile strike on Thursday hit a fuel facility in the central region of Poltava.

But the Russian defense ministry said on Friday that the target was a Ukrainian military facility and the strike resulted in cutting the supply of fuel to Ukrainian troops.

Russian forces continue to launch heavy attacks in Donbass in the eastern part of Ukraine.

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk on Thursday called on about 6,000 civilians still in Bakhmut in the Donetsk region to evacuate immediately as they are in imminent danger.

Russia seems determined to capture Ukrainian strongholds despite its heavy casualties.

A former security guard at the British Embassy in Berlin has been sentenced to 13 years and two months in prison for spying for Russia.

A court in London ruled on Friday that David Smith abused his position and sold secrets to Russian authorities for about a year since 2020.

The judge said Smith took photographs of confidential documents at night, after the staff had gone.

Prosecutors said they found a draft letter at the defendant's home offering to hand over secrets to Russia, along with personal information on embassy employees.

Smith was arrested in 2021, reportedly in a sting operation by British and German authorities. Undercover operatives are said to have approached him, posing as Russian officials.

A similar case took place in Stockholm in January. A former Swedish intelligence officer charged with spying for Russia for more than a decade was sentenced to life in prison.

Authorities in Norway have seized 5.8 million dollars' worth of cryptocurrency allegedly stolen by the North Korean hacker group Lazarus.

Norway's national economic crime unit said on Thursday that Lazarus hacked a blockchain project linked to an online game in March last year.

It said the group is believed to have stolen as much as 480 million dollars' worth of cryptocurrency in the heist.

The investigators say they worked with specialists from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Lazarus is said to be controlled by the North Korean government.

Crypto assets stolen by the group are believed to help fund Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

The Norwegian investigators say they will return the seized assets to the victims and continue to investigate the North Korean group's activities.
