A White House official says a US fighter jet has shot down a high-altitude object flying over Alaska on the order of President Joe Biden, as it posed a "reasonable threat" to the safety of civilian aircraft.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby on Friday said the object went down on the far northeastern part of Alaska near the Canadian border.

Kirby said the object was the size of a small car and was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet, or about 12,000 meters.

He also said the object did not appear to be maneuverable and was at the mercy of the wind.

He added the object differed in size and altitude from the Chinese balloon that the US shot down last week.

Kirby said the origin and purpose of the unidentified object was unclear. The US military plans to recover the debris of the object.

A senior US State Department official says the Chinese balloon that recently flew across the United States was equipped with antennas capable of collecting intelligence signals.

On Thursday, the official revealed new information about an image analysis of the balloon, which was eventually shot down by US military jets last Saturday.

The official said images captured by US military surveillance planes show the balloon had multiple antennas that are capable of detecting communications. The images also show that solar panels were used to power intelligence collection sensors.

The official denied China's claim that the balloon was a "civilian unmanned airship."

The senior official also said the US is confident that the manufacturer of the balloon has a direct relationship with China's military and is an approved vendor of the People's Liberation Army.

The official added that China has conducted similar surveillance balloon flights over more than 40 countries.

The official mentioned the US will take action against entities linked to China's military that enabled the balloon to enter the US's airspace.

The US government has added six Chinese entities connected to Beijing's aerial surveillance program to its export blacklist.

The move follows the shoot-down of a Chinese balloon off the coast of the US state of South Carolina last Saturday. It had travelled across the continental US for several days. The FBI has been analyzing the balloon's debris salvaged from the sea.

The administration of US President Joe Biden suspects the balloon was for reconnaissance and that companies with direct links to the People's Liberation Army were involved in its production.

The export blacklist regulates companies and organizations that undermine US national security and foreign policies.

The US Department of Commerce said the six entities that were added to the list support the PLA's aerospace programs including airships and balloons. It also said the PLA is using high-altitude balloons for intelligence and reconnaissance activities.

A senior commerce department official said the balloon violated US sovereignty and called it a threat to national security. The official also said Friday's action will prevent the six entities from accessing US technologies.

The Chinese Communist Party's No.4 in leadership lineup has met with the deputy head of Taiwan's largest opposition party, the Kuomintang.

State-run China Central Television says Wang Huning, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, met with Kuomintang vice chair Andrew Hsia in Beijing on Friday.

CCTV reports that Wang told Hsia he will implement Chinese President Xi Jinping's instructions and achieve the historic mission of national unification and rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Chinese media said Wang urged the KMT to oppose, together with the Communist Party of China, the independence of Taiwan and the interference of foreign forces. They say Wang urged Hsia to maintain peace and stability together in the Taiwan Strait.

Observers say Wang probably wants to join hands with the KMT to keep Washington in check as the US government is increasing its involvement in Taiwan affairs. They say the talks are also seen as a move to counter Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

Next month, Wang is expected to assume the head the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, whose mission includes covert operations to reunify Taiwan.

Some Taiwanese media quoted Chinese sources as saying that the timing of the talks shows Wang is keenly interested in Taiwan issues and is leading the management of cross-strait affairs.

The KMT is apparently hoping that Friday's talks with the communist party leadership will cast itself as the party capable of easing tensions through dialogue.

The opposition party also hopes the talks will provide momentum to its goal to return to power in next year's presidential election.

Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party accuses the KMT of pandering to Beijing's reunification efforts.

Rescue crews in Turkey and Syria are refusing to give up five days after earthquakes devastated towns and cities along the border. More than 23,000 people are confirmed to have died, and millions are in dire need of help.

The 72-hour window is said to be crucial to rescue anyone trapped under the rubble. But even days later, victims are being found alive. Crews know they are running out of time to find others and to give them the care they need.

One survivor in the Turkish province of Hatay said, "God forbid anyone goes through this sorrow, this pain. We have thousands, tens of thousands, dead."

Doctors and nurses are struggling to keep up. They are working in facilities without electricity and running water. And they are running out of medicine.

Survivors from the Turkish city of Kahramanmaras are being flown to the capital, Ankara, for treatment. They include families, small children and infants.

Thousands who remain in the city have lost everything. They have been moved to a makeshift camp set up by the government and international organizations.

Aid workers and relief supplies have also begun arriving from abroad. However, staff are struggling to help those in need as they, and the survivors, deal with below-freezing temperatures.

Many people in rebel-held areas of Syria desperately need more support following Monday's devastating earthquakes. United Nations aid officials say food is running out.

World Food Programme Regional Director for the Middle East Corinne Fleischer said, "Northwest Syria, where 90% of the population depends on humanitarian assistance, is a big concern. We have reached the people there, but we need to replenish our stocks."

Fleischer says its essential to create more border crossings from Turkey. There is currently just one. It was shut after Monday's quakes but reopened on Thursday.

Syria has been ravaged by 12 years of civil war. The International Committee of the Red Cross urges both sides to cooperate with the delivery of vital supplies.

ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said, "What is most important now is that we gain access to all parts of northern Syria to help people who need our urgent support. Impartial humanitarian assistance should never be hindered, nor politicized. We have to get access."

On Friday, state media said the government of President Bashar al-Assad has approved the movement of aid across the civil war's frontlines.

The death toll from the quakes in Syria stands at more than 3,300.

A Russian TV journalist who denounced the invasion of Ukraine live on air has spoken about her escape to France.

Last March, Marina Ovsyannikova interrupted a news program holding a sign reading, "No war".

She escaped house arrest the following autumn.

At the headquarters of Reporters Without Borders in Paris on Friday, she explained how she used seven different vehicles before leaving the country on foot.

She revealed that she chose a night on the weekend because there would be less chance of being chased by security forces.

Ovsyannikova said the Russian people do not know the truth about the situation in Ukraine.

She said they live in a "propaganda bubble", and consider the reports elsewhere about Bucha and Mariupol to be fake.

Ovsyannikova fears Russia is becoming increasingly brutal and aggressive. She called on the international community to unite and provide Ukraine with more support.

A Japanese animated film based on a popular basketball comic series has become a hit in South Korea. "The First Slam Dunk" has attracted audiences of more than 2.5 million people since its release on January 4.

The film was written and directed by Inoue Takehiko, the author of the "Slam Dunk" comic books.

As of Thursday, the movie was at the top of South Korea's box-office rankings for two weeks in a row. It has become the third most-watched Japanese animated film in the country.

The manga series enjoyed popularity among schoolchildren of all ages after it was first published in South Korea in the 1990s.

An estimated nearly 70 percent of those seeing the movie are people in their 30s and 40s who read the original. But the number of viewers in their 20s and younger is also said to be increasing.

A woman in her 20s said she saw the film three times. She said it helped her to relate to people from older generations with whom she usually does not talk much.

The popularity of the movie has helped boost the sales of the original comic series and other related products. About 600,000 copies of the repackaged version of the comics have been sold since the release of the film.

Some culture critics in the country say the film is winning the hearts of younger generations at a time of uncertainty. They say they sympathize with the characters of the movie who never give up.

Tokyo prosecutors are learning that leading Japanese ad agency Dentsu played a larger role in a bid-rigging scandal involving the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Sources have told NHK that Dentsu is suspected of advising the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Organizing Committee on how to write a document about specifications with detailed terms and conditions for bidders. Dentsu was a bidder and was awarded some projects.

According to the sources, in the autumn of 2017, the year before the bidding took place, Henmi Koji, a former senior Dentsu official, set up an in-house team to support the organizing committee. Henmi was said to be virtually leading the team.

Mori Yasuo, who was the deputy director of the committee's operations bureau at the time, had requested such a team to Henmi.

Previous investigations had revealed that Dentsu provided Mori with its research results on the past tendering records of each bidder.

Dentsu is also suspected of developing for the committee an assignment list of bidders to specific sports.

Tokyo prosecutors are believed to be investigating the case, suspecting that Dentsu, which participated in the bidding, and the organizing committee, which placed the order, worked together to manage the bidding.

They have arrested four people, including Henmi and Mori, in connection with the bid-rigging for Games projects worth 40 billion yen, or about 304 million dollars.

The biddings covered work to develop plans for test events and the operation of main events.

The four are suspected of violating Japan's Anti-Monopoly Act.
