The US military is rushing to recover and analyze the debris from a Chinese balloon that its fighter jet shot down.

The US Department of Defense announced on Saturday that an F22 fighter jet fired an air-to-air missile at the balloon, which China describes as a civilian airship. It was shot down over waters about 11 kilometers off the coast of South Carolina in US airspace.

No damage to civilian aircraft or ships has been reported.

A senior US military official told reporters that the debris spread out over an area of about 11 kilometers. The official estimated that the recovery efforts would be completed in a relatively short period of time.

A senior defense official said that the balloon entered the US air defense zone north of the Aleutian Islands on January 28. After passing through Canadian airspace on Monday, it reportedly crossed back into the US territory over northern Idaho on Tuesday.

The official reiterated that the balloon was used for surveillance, saying that they managed to analyze devices in the balloon while it was flying. The official indicated that the balloon was apparently on a reconnaissance mission.

US military officials plan to examine the recovered debris with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to analyze its surveillance capabilities.

China continues to claim that the balloon, which they referred to as a "civilian airship," was flown mainly for weather research and was blown off course. But the country has protested the US decision to shoot it down.

China's foreign ministry has expressed "strong dissatisfaction and protest" against the United States' shooting down of its balloon.

A US military jet shot down the balloon, which China described as a civilian "unmanned airship," off the coast of South Carolina, on Saturday local time.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the ministry said that China had repeatedly told the United States that the aircraft had entered the US airspace by accident.

The ministry also said the use of force against the balloon was an "obvious overreaction" and violated international standard practices.

The statement added that China will "safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of relevant companies" and "reserves the right to make further necessary reaction."

As heavy fighting continues in the eastern regions of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the situation on the front is very difficult but remained defiant.

The Ukrainian defense ministry also noted on social media on Saturday that Russians are intensifying their war effort in the Ukraine's eastern regions of Donetsk and Kharkiv.

Zelenskyy talked of the difficult situation in Bakhmut, a stronghold of Ukraine in Donetsk, in his video speech on Saturday.

He said that "the occupier throws in more and more of its forces to break our defenses." He stressed the importance of resilience among Ukrainian soldiers.

Zelenskyy touched upon Challenger 2 tanks that Britain promised to provide, saying training has already begun in the UK to teach Ukrainian soldiers how to use them. He noted that this will be significant.

The United States on Friday announced more military aid to Ukraine, including long range rockets.

Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev reacted to the news by mentioning the potential use of nuclear weapons.

He said in a written interview with a Russian reporter on Saturday that Russia can use all kinds of weapons in accordance with the "basic principles of nuclear deterrence" and that the response will be fast and severe.

Medvedev is known for using hardline language on western military assistance to Ukraine.

A Japanese group supporting sexual minorities has criticized controversial remarks on same-sex couples by Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's former secretary.

Japan Alliance for LGBT Legislation said in a statement on its website on Saturday that the group found the situation extremely serious.

The statement added that the remark casts a shadow of doubt on the integrity of Japan in the international community, at a time when the country chairs the Group of Seven countries.

Kishida fired Arai Masayoshi on Saturday for making the remarks. He reportedly said he despises same-sex couples. Arai has been one of Kishida's secretaries since October 2021.

The group also said that Kishida's positions should be questioned even after the former secretary retracted his remarks.

It said while a nationwide survey shows an improved perception of sexual minorities, Arai's statement deviates from what many in society consider appropriate.

It pointed out that such outdated perceptions are behind the high percentage of attempted suicides by sexual minorities and the failure to sufficiently deal with the coexistence of careers and child-rearing.

The group called for a law that bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity during the current Diet session. It insists that the perceptions displayed in the latest gaffe result from outdated legal norms.

Philippine Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla says there is a possibility that his government will extradite four Japanese men to Japan as early as Tuesday.

Japanese police suspect the four men are linked to a series of robberies in Japan that left one person dead. They are being held at an immigration facility in Metro Manila.

In an interview with NHK on Saturday, Remulla said that efforts are being made to deport the four men on Tuesday.

President Marcos Jr. is due to visit Japan from Wednesday for the first time since he took office. The Philippine government has expressed hope to deport the four men before the visit.

Japanese police obtained arrest warrants for Watanabe Yuki, Kojima Tomonobu, Fujita Toshiya, and Imamura Kiyoto on suspicion of fraud and other cases separate from the robberies. The police requested the Philippine side to extradite them to Japan.

Watanabe and Kojima were charged in Manila in unrelated cases. They cannot be extradited unless their charges are dismissed.

Court proceedings for them will be held on Monday, one day earlier than initially scheduled. The date was moved up in response to a request by prosecutors. The Philippine government plans to extradite them to Japan immediately if their charges are dismissed.

The other two, Fujita and Imamura, were also charged in separate cases. But their charges have already been dismissed, effectively clearing the way for their extradition.

The number of airline passengers using Japan's Narita Airport has increased nearly threefold over a year, largely owing to the relaxation of border controls in October.

But the figure is only about one-third of the pre-pandemic level as the number of passengers from China has not recovered.

The airport operating company says that in 2022, 15.42 million passengers used Narita Airport east of Tokyo. The overall number was more than 10 million, up 2.9 times the previous year.

The number of international passengers was 9.03 million, 4.7 times more than the year before. The 2021 number was the lowest in the airport began operating in May 1978.

The figure for domestic flight passengers was 6.38 million, 1.9 times that in 2021.

Increased border controls have kept the number of passengers from China low.

The president of Narita International Airport Corporation, Tamura Akihiko, said visitors from China are the key for the recovery of the number of passengers.

He added that his company will work to maintain sufficient services, even if the number suddenly rebounds.

Ohtani Shohei, the Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels two-way star, is likely to leave for Japan in early March to join Japan's national team for the World Baseball Classic tournament.

The Angel's general manager, Perry Minasian, told reporters on Saturday that Ohtani is most likely leaving for Japan on March 1 although the schedule "could change a day or two."

Minasian's comments made it almost certain that Ohtani will skip the national team's training camp scheduled in Miyazaki Prefecture, southern Japan, from February 17 to 27. Ohtani will join his team's camp that will start on February 15.

The general manager also said Ohtani will take one start as a pitcher during spring training before leaving for Japan.

The World Baseball Classic tournament will start on March 8.

Minasian said they came up with a "pretty good plan" after having multiple discussions. He also expressed strong confidence in Ohtani, saying "He's doing everything he needs to do to be ready to go. He is the least of my concerns."

Asked about restrictions for Ohtani during the WBC tournament, the general manager said there will be no restriction from the Angels' side.

He said, "We expect him to play, and hit and pitch and do what he does, and show the world how good of a player he is."
