Former US President Donald Trump has blasted the federal indictment against him as "ridiculous and baseless" in his first public appearance since the charges were announced.
The indictment unsealed on Friday charges the former president on 37 counts, including willful retention of national defense information.
In a speech at a Republican convention in the southern state of Georgia on Saturday, Trump asserted his innocence and accused President Joe Biden of trying to undermine his presidential campaign for 2024.
"The ridiculous and baseless indictment of me by the Biden administration's weaponized Department of Injustice will go down as among the most horrific abuses of power in the history of our country," Trump said.
He added that "the only good thing about it is it's driven my poll numbers way up."
Trump is the current front-runner for the Republican nomination in the presidential election next year.

Knowledgeable sources have told NHK that the United States is expected to announce its return to UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which it left five years ago.
Former President Donald Trump decided in 2017 to pull the United States out of the UN cultural body on the grounds that it was biased against Israel.
The Trump administration at the time clearly showed its pro-Israeli stance, and made an official withdrawal in 2018.
A spokesperson at the US State Department has told NHK that it has already sent a letter to UNESCO on June 8 notifying its plan to rejoin.
UNESCO sources say an extraordinary meeting of ambassadors is scheduled to be held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on Monday to formally inform them of the US decision.
Sources say the UNESCO secretariat usually informs its member countries of the meeting's agenda ahead of its opening. But they say this time unusual steps have been taken, including providing no such prior information.
The government of US President Joe Biden, prioritizing international cooperation, has already returned to a number of entities the United States withdrew from during the Trump administration.
They include the Paris Agreement on climate change, and the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Four children who were aboard a small plane that crashed last month in Colombia's Amazon jungle have been found alive about 40 days later.
Colombian forces searching the area rescued the indigenous children aged 13, nine, four and one, on Friday.
The plane went down on May 1 in southern Colombia. Three adults on board, including the children's mother and the pilot, had been found dead.
Soldiers and other searchers continued looking for the children. They thought the siblings were likely alive as discarded pieces of fruit that looked like they had been bitten by humans were spotted near the crash site.
The children are now being treated in a hospital. Local media say none of them is in life-threatening condition although they suffered dehydration and insect bites.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro called their survival "a joy for the whole country."

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says his country's troops have already started a counteroffensive against Russia's forces.
Zelenskyy made the announcement during a joint news conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The news conference was held on Saturday, after their meeting in the capital, Kyiv.
Zelenskyy said that counteroffensive and defensive actions against Russia's forces are underway.
But he refrained from providing any details. He said that he would not mention which stage or phase they are in.
Zelenskyy said he was confident the operation would be successful. He mentioned that he speaks with the commanders every day, and that they are all in a positive mood.
Russian President Vladimir Putin noted on Friday that Ukraine's forces have started their expected counteroffensive.
The British Defense Ministry said on Saturday that "in the last 48 hours, significant Ukrainian operations have been taking place in several sectors of eastern and southern Ukraine."
It said, "In some areas, Ukrainian forces have likely made good progress and penetrated the first line of Russian defenses. In others, Ukrainian progress has been slower."
Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said on Saturday that, over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian forces have been trying to carry out counteroffensive operations in the southern Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, and on the outskirts of Bakhmut.
But Konashenkov said the Ukrainian forces have continued to fail. He stressed that Russia's forces have been repelling their attacks.

A spokesperson for Ukraine's southern region of Kherson says Russia is obstructing relief efforts in areas flooded after the collapse of a dam.
Oleksandr Tolokonnikov spoke online with NHK on Friday.
The Kakhovka hydroelectric power-generating dam in Kherson collapsed on Tuesday, and massive amounts of water were released.
Tolokonnikov said water levels are coming down in inundated areas, but that at least 2,300 people in the northwestern side of the Dnipro River were forced to evacuate.
He said about 70 percent of the flooded areas are on the southeastern side of the river controlled by Russia, and about 10,000 residents there are in need of rescue and support.
Tolokonnikov said that over the past three days, Russia has hindered the evacuation of residents and volunteer relief efforts, and even drinking water cannot be delivered.
He said landmines that Russian forces planted are believed to have drifted to the urban area, and the flooding will likely have a lasting adverse effect on agriculture.
Tolokonnikov noted that water levels in the upstream areas have also come down, reducing groundwater and causing many fish to die.
He said the regional government plans to use construction machinery provided by Japan for reconstruction efforts, and added that more will be needed in the future.
Tolokonnikov expressed hope for more technological assistance from Japan.
