US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Beijing for two days of meetings with senior Chinese officials. He is the highest-ranking Biden administration official to visit China since ties between the two countries took a downturn earlier this year.

Blinken arrived in Beijing on Sunday morning. Details of his schedule have not been revealed, but he is expected to hold talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang later in the day.

Items expected to be discussed include bilateral ties, Taiwan, and the conflict in Ukraine.

Ahead of his departure, Blinken said the US government wants to establish open and empowered communications with China.
Washington wants to promote dialogue at various levels to prevent unintended events from developing into conflicts.

Observers say China is expected to reiterate its basic stance that Taiwan is a part of its territory. Beijing is alarmed by Washington's deeper engagement in Taiwan despite its pledge to maintain the One-China policy.

Blinken was initially set to travel to China in February, but that trip was postponed after an alleged Chinese spy balloon flew over US territory.

He is also expected to meet with Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi. It is believed that arrangements are underway for Blinken to meet with President Xi Jinping.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with seven African leaders in St. Petersburg on Saturday. He used the opportunity to justify the invasion of Ukraine, and indicate his intention to boost ties with African nations.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Senegalese President Macky Sall were among the leaders.

Putin told them that he welcomes the "balanced stance" of African nations on the Ukraine crisis. He also said the situation shouldn't cause African countries to suffer.

Earlier this month, the Russian president said his country is considering withdrawing from a grain export deal reached with Ukraine. He also said Russia might deliver grain free of charge to African nations.

South African President Ramaphosa said the delegation wants to deliver a clear message that the war needs to end. He noted that prices of energy and fertilizer are soaring in Africa.

The delegation had met earlier on Friday with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

Transport ministers from the Group of Seven nations have agreed to work together toward de-carbonization in the transportation sector by promoting sustainable aviation fuel.

The ministers wrapped up their two-day meeting in the central Japanese city of Shima on Sunday.

They released a joint statement pledging to make a coordinated effort in promoting the use of sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, which is made from plants and waste oil.

The ministers hope to cut greenhouse gas emissions to less than half of the levels generated by conventional jet fuel.

On Saturday, the ministers also discussed with their Ukrainian counterpart ways to restore the war-torn nation.

The statement confirms that the G7 will work together to help rebuild transportation infrastructure in the country.

The ministers say that they will consider setting up a working-level meeting to strengthen supply chains after the Russian invasion caused disruptions on a global scale.

US President Joe Biden has held his first campaign rally since he announced in April that he will seek a second term in the 2024 presidential election.

About 2,000 labor union members gathered for Saturday's event in Pennsylvania, where Biden was born.

Biden said he is "proud to be the most pro-union president in American history."

He said, "It's about building an economy literally, not figuratively, from the bottom up and the middle out, not the top down." He added, "Because when the middle class does well, everybody does well."

Pennsylvania is an important swing state, where workers' votes are said to be key.

Some Americans have concerns about Biden's age as he will turn 81 in November. But there have been no moves within the Democratic Party so far to nominate other candidates.

The Republican Party has 11 candidates who are seeking the GOP's presidential nomination. They include former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is seen as Trump's biggest rival.

With his 23rd home run of the season, Ohtani tops both leagues for home runs.

But the Angels lost the game by 10-9 with a walk-off single by a rookie with the Royals.

Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa says his country is willing to help emerging and developing nations combat climate change. Those nations are collectively known as the Global South.

Hayashi accompanied ambassadors from nine countries on a trip to an offshore wind farm in the northern Japanese prefecture of Akita on Saturday. Envoys from India, South Africa and Mexico were among the participants.

Commercial operations have begun at two wind farms in Akita. A representative of the company that operates them said two farms can generate enough electricity to power more than 130,000 ordinary households.

Hayashi spoke to reporters afterwards. He referred to climate change as a "climate crisis" that is a challenge to all humankind. He said countries need to try to achieve the same goals by utilizing a range of technologies and energy sources.

The minister said Japan wants to help the Global South and other nations switch to other forms of energy. He added that Tokyo wants to help the countries make the transition in a way that does not undermine their economies.
