Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force says it recently held a joint exercise with the navies of the United States, Australia and Canada in the East China Sea.

The MSDF says the three-day drill that started on Saturday involved five vessels, including Japanese and US destroyers.

The vessels reportedly held tactical practice by linking their communications systems to share information. The MSDF released photos of the five vessels navigating together.

The four countries held joint exercises in 2019 and 2022 in the Pacific and the South China Sea, but this was their first drill in the East China Sea.

The MSDF says the joint exercise enhanced cooperation among the four countries with the aim of realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific, apparently with China's increasing maritime activities in mind.

A US guided-missile destroyer took part in the drill after passing through the Taiwan Strait on Saturday.

The US military says a Chinese destroyer sailed across the bow of the US vessel while it was conducting a routine transit through the strait along with a Canadian vessel, coming as close as about 140 meters.

China's defense ministry says the air forces of China and Russia conducted their sixth joint aerial strategic patrol over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea on Tuesday.

The ministry said in a statement that the patrol was carried out in accordance with the China-Russia annual military cooperation schedule. It did not reveal the types of aircraft or the specific airspace in which they flew.

Last November, the defense ministries of the two countries said their strategic bombers held joint patrols over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea.

In March, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to conduct joint patrols and military drills on a regular basis.
They also agreed that the two countries would boost military exchanges and cooperation.

The South Korean military's Joint Chiefs of Staff said four Chinese and four Russian military planes flew over the Sea of Japan and entered South Korea's air defense identification zone south of the Korean Peninsula for about 2 hours from around noon Tuesday. It added that they did not violate South Korea's airspace.

The military said it identified the planes before they entered the defense identification zone, and that it had deployed fighter jets in preparation for potential accidental situations.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said the planes may have included bombers. The agency also said South Korea issued warnings about the flights, and that China responded on a hotline that they were a regular exercise.

A business forum has been held in Tokyo to mark 50 years of relations between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The Japanese government organized the event on Tuesday.

The main focus of the discussions was on creating new business opportunities by boosting start-ups in ASEAN countries.

Participants also discussed ways for Japanese entrepreneurs to establish start-ups in the region, and how to strengthen cooperation with economic organizations there.

In 2009, China became ASEAN's largest trading partner, overtaking Japan. South Korea has also increased its presence through soft power, such as music and TV dramas.

Japan is now looking to cultivate new channels with young business leaders in ASEAN countries, rather than just relying on traditional partnerships in manufacturing businesses such as the automobile industry.

Yohanes Lukiman, a senior official of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, stressed the importance of person-to-person exchanges.

He said that "meeting like-minded people who have the same goals and philosophy" can be a starting point for building and accelerating economic diplomacy between Japan and ASEAN.

A special summit meeting is planned between Japanese and ASEAN leaders in December.
