Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has told US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that he will strive to bolster the deterrence capabilities of the bilateral alliance.

Kishida and Austin talked for about 30 minutes in Tokyo on Thursday.

Kishida said North Korea on Wednesday went ahead with the launch of a purported military reconnaissance satellite using ballistic missile technology.

He said the regional security situation is worsening due to the North's nuclear and missile development programs.

He said he will aim to ensure peace and stability in the region by strengthening the Japan-US alliance's deterrence and response capabilities.

Austin responded that the leaders of the Group of Seven countries underscored the shared commitment to strengthening the rules-based international order in the Hiroshima summit in May.

He said Japan's updating of the national security and defense strategies is an important step toward that goal, adding that Japan's decision to boost defense spending and invest in counterstrike capabilities will strengthen deterrence.

Austin said that the United States will fully support Japan's efforts.

South Korea's defense ministry says it has successfully tested a homegrown missile interceptor capable of taking out a high-altitude ballistic missile, amid the growing security threats from North Korea.

The ministry announced on Thursday that the successful test with the Long-range Surface-to-Air Missile, or L-SAM, took place on Tuesday. South Korea has conducted four L-SAM interception tests since November. Three of them have been successful, including the latest one.

South Korea regards the L-SAM interceptor as a pillar of its three-pronged deterrence system of preemptive strikes, shooting down incoming missiles, and retaliation.

South Korea says the L-SAM interceptor is capable of shooting down an incoming ballistic missile at altitudes of 50 to 60 kilometers. US Patriot missiles hit targets at altitudes of 40 kilometers or lower.

Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup inspected Tuesday's interception test. He said the L-SAM's capability will not only improve the capabilities to respond to North Korean missile threats, but also contribute greatly to strengthening the missile defense capability of the South Korea-US alliance.

The ministry plans to complete the L-SAM development by next year, with a planned deployment date set in the late 2020s.

Representatives from the US and Taiwan have signed the first deal under what they call the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade. The ceremony took place on Thursday in Arlington, Virginia.

The agreement streamlines border procedures, allowing American businesses to deliver their products "easier, faster and cheaper." Small and medium-sized companies from both sides will get support with financing, opening up trade and investment opportunities.

Chinese leaders have repeatedly opposed the initiative as a violation of the "one-China" principle.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said at a news conference in Beijing on Thursday that the US should not sign agreements with Taiwan that "imply sovereignty." She added that the US should not send "any wrong signal to the separatist forces for Taiwan independence in the name of economy and trade."

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen is hoping to build on this deal. She wants agreements in other trade areas, including agriculture, digital trade and labor standards, completed by the end of the year.
