Search and rescue efforts continue on Sunday, four days after a US Osprey military aircraft crashed into the sea off Yakushima Island in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima.

Eight personnel were on board when the Osprey went down on Wednesday. One of them has been confirmed dead, while seven others remain unaccounted for.

The US Air Force says the crewmember confirmed dead has been identified as 24-year-old Staff Sergeant Jacob Galliher, who was stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa.

What appears to be part of the wreckage of the aircraft was retrieved by fishers in waters off the island and stored in a warehouse in the town of Yakushima.

On Sunday morning, US personnel were seen visiting the warehouse, wrapping up the stored items and loading them onto a truck before heading to Yakushima Airport.

The US Air Force also said the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is taking part in the search for the missing crewmembers. Carrier-based aircraft and drones as well as divers are being used in the operation.

The Air Force says in a statement, "Our joint force and Japanese allies stand united in our determination to bring our air commandos home."

Meanwhile, as part of the search operation, two US Ospreys arrived at the airport on Amami Island in Kagoshima Prefecture on Sunday morning.
The regional bureau of Japan's Defense Ministry says those Ospreys are deployed at US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

The two Ospreys took off at around 10:50 a.m., after spending about an hour and 20 minutes at the airport, then headed eastward.

North Korea says a new unit to operate the reconnaissance satellite launched last month began its mission on Saturday.

The ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said on Sunday the mission had been tasked to the reconnaissance satellite operation office at the Pyongyang General Control Centre of the National Aerospace Technology Administration, or NATA.

The paper said information gathered by the satellite will be offered to "major units" responsible for war deterrence, and to the General Reconnaissance Bureau of the Korean People's Army.

Pyongyang said earlier the satellite had taken images on a trial basis of the White House and the Pentagon, as well as US Kadena Air Base in Japan's southwestern prefecture of Okinawa, and US bases in South Korea and Guam.

North Korea's defense ministry was quoted as saying it expects the country's war deterrence to assume a "more perfect military posture."

Observers say the satellite is part of Pyongyang's efforts to beef up monitoring of moves by Japan, the United States and South Korea.

North Korea's Foreign Ministry has responded angrily to the coordinated sanctions imposed by Japan, the United States, South Korea and Australia over its launch of a reconnaissance satellite.

It issued a statement from its spokesperson on the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Saturday night.

The statement said that "it will apply countermeasures to individuals, institutions and organizations of the US and its vassal forces."

The four countries have imposed sanctions on senior officials of North Korea's National Aerospace Technology Administration, which launched the satellite, and other organizations.

Pyongyang said that "the US and its servants" who are "keen to deprive sovereign states of their legitimate rights" should be the object of sanctions.

The statement further emphasized that North Korea will apply countermeasures to defend the sovereignty and interests of the state, according to the law of the country.

Pyongyang has made comments against Japan, the US and South Korea, which condemned the launch of the spy satellite.

Now by citing individuals and organizations which it could target, North Korea shows clearly where it stands against those countries.

A man stabbed a passerby to death and injured two others in central Paris on Saturday. Police have arrested a 26-year-old French citizen.

Reuters news agency and other media say the assailant stabbed a German tourist with a knife and used a hammer to attack the two other people near the Eiffel Tower.

The French interior ministry and other authorities said the man had been under surveillance as a person influenced by extremist Islamic ideology. They said he had shouted "God is great" in Arabic before being arrested.

The suspect reportedly told investigators he could not stand Muslims being killed in Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories.

Authorities are investigating the attack as an act of terrorism. They are trying to determine the suspect's motives.

Israel's military says it has hit more than 400 targets in the Gaza Strip in one day after resuming its offensive against Hamas. Health authorities in Gaza say more than 200 people have died and 589 others have been wounded.

The Israeli military resumed its operations against Hamas on Friday morning after a pause in fighting had expired.

It said in a social media post on Saturday morning that it struck some 400 targets. The military said they included a Hamas stronghold in the northern city of Beit Lahia, which it attacked from the air and on the ground with tanks.

Israel also said it conducted air strikes on more than 50 targets in the southern city of Khan Yunis.

An Arabic-speaking spokesperson for the Israeli military urged people to evacuate if they are in zones designated for evacuation as shown on a map of Gaza released on social media.

Footage taken in Gaza on Saturday morning shows rising pillars of black smoke.

Qatar-based satellite TV new service Al Jazeera said there were fierce air strikes in Gaza from Friday night through Saturday morning.

Many people fled northern Gaza for the southern part of the enclave after Israel launched an offensive in October.

There is growing concern about the possibility of more casualties in southern Gaza if Israeli forces continue their attacks in the region.

Hamas's armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, said on social media that it fired rockets toward the Israeli town of Sderot and Israel's largest business hub of Tel Aviv in retaliation for Israeli attacks on civilians.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said in a social media post on Friday that Israeli forces were preventing the entry of aid through the Rafah border crossing. It said Israeli forces informed all organizations and entities operating there that the entry of aid trucks from Egypt to Gaza is prohibited from Friday until further notice.

There is growing concern that a delay in the transport of aid supplies into Gaza could cause the humanitarian situation there to further deteriorate.

World leaders attending the United Nations COP28 climate conference in the United Arab Emirates are pledging to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The two-day high-level meetings wrapped up in Dubai on Saturday with speeches by leaders from about 140 countries and regions.

They took part in discussions on ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The UAE, which holds the COP 28 presidency, has announced that more than 110 governments agreed to a pledge to triple renewable energy, and double the global rate of energy efficiency by 2030.

The UAE's COP28 Director-General Ambassador, Majid Al Suwaidi, noted at a news conference that the participants agreed on the first day of discussions on rules to operate the "loss and damage" fund.

He said the countries have already delivered a lot, but this is just the beginning.

In discussions over emissions reductions, leaders from European and island nations stressed the need to phase out the use of fossil fuel, but there has been no substantial progress.

As there are differences among governments, further discussions are needed on how to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Japan's meteorological authorities have lifted a tsunami advisory for all coastal areas. The advisory had been issued after a strong earthquake hit the Philippines' Mindanao Island on Saturday night.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the quake struck off Mindanao at around 10:30 p.m. local time. It registered a magnitude of 7.7.

The agency is still calling for caution, as water levels may continue to fluctuate for some time.

Authorities in The Philippines say a 64-centimeter tsunami and various smaller waves were observed at locations around northern and eastern Mindanao.

Tremors with magnitudes of 5 to 6 are ongoing. Power has been knocked out, and some residents are reportedly staying in public evacuation centers.

There have been no reports of injuries or major damage so far.

Dozens of Akita Inu dogs were paraded along a road in Tokyo's Shibuya ward to celebrate 100 years since the birth of Hachiko -- a male Akita that became famous for its loyalty.

Hachiko was born in 1923 and lived with his owner in Shibuya. The canine used to wait for its master to return from work each day at Shibuya Station even after he died.

On Saturday, about 40 Akita dogs and their owners from around the country gathered in Shibuya for an event organized by the Akita Inu Preservation Society based in Odate City, Akita Prefecture. The city was the birthplace of Hachiko.

The dogs and their owners set out for a walk at around 2 p.m. along a one-kilometer route between the Shibuya ward office and Shibuya Station.

They walked for around one hour, attracting a crowd of people who wanted to get a glimpse of the dogs and take their photos.

Although a little nervous at first, the canines gradually warmed to the crowd and some even did tricks.

A man who came from Gunma Prefecture with his 2-year-old Akita said that he loves his dog which he said is fiercely loyalty. He said everyone agreed that his dog was cute and that the gathering will make for a good memory.

An admirer of the Akita breed said that she felt comforted when she first touched the dogs' fluffy hair and that she will show her friends the video she took of the dog parade.
