China accused the US Navy of violating its sovereignty during a South China Sea maneuver the US said was routine and in international waters.

China's Southern Theater Command said Monday that the USS Gabrielle Giffords illegally entered waters around the Second Thomas Shoal of the Spratly Islands without China's permission. China and the Philippines both claim territory near the shoal.

The command spokesperson accused the US of deliberately disrupting the situation in the South China Sea, seriously violating China's sovereignty and security, and undermining regional peace and stability.

The US Navy's 7th Fleet spokesperson told NHK that the "USS Gabrielle Giffords was conducting routine operations in international waters in the South China Sea, consistent with international law. Every day the US 7th Fleet operates in the South China Sea, as they have for decades."

The fleet spokesperson also said, "We will not be deterred from continuing to work alongside our allies and partners in support of our shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific."

In their summit in November, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to resume bilateral talks between defense ministers.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has spoken about his country's falling birthrate at a nationwide meeting of mothers.

The country's state-run television reported on Tuesday that the National Congress of Mothers was convened on Sunday and Monday for the first time in 11 years.

Kim delivered a speech in which he reportedly said it is patriotic to bear and raise many children.

The state-run broadcaster also aired a video of Kim wiping away tears as he listened to a speech by a senior official on the role of mothers.

South Korea's Unification Ministry says the North's total fertility rate -- the average number of children born to a woman in her lifetime -- will be 1.79 this year.

This figure is much lower than in other countries with similar income levels.

South Korean media suggests the North is alarmed over the possibility of a further decline in the country's birthrate.

Fake videos are taking over social media when news breaks, especially when disaster strikes. That's what happened recently after a massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia and a string of earthquakes in the Philippines.

After the 2,885-meter-high Marapi volcano in Indonesia's West Sumatra province erupted on Sunday, killing at least 11 hikers, video clips of eruptions unrelated to the actual event spread on social media.

On X, formerly Twitter, video of a pillar of fire exploding from the sea has been posted on multiple accounts, claiming it's from Sunday's eruption. On one account alone, it has racked up more than 1.2 million views. But it turned out the video had nothing to do with the actual eruption. It's believed to be CG footage shown on video-sharing app TikTok around September.
