Israel's intensified military strikes on the Gaza Strip have so far resulted in 17,700 deaths, according to the Palestinian health authority.

Israel Defense Forces pounded various locations, including the southern city of Khan Younis from land, sea and air. The military says that Yahya Sinwar, Hamas' leader in Gaza, is likely hiding in the area.

As the civilian death toll continues to rise, the IDF have posted images on social media. They claim that the images show attacks by Hamas coming from a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, or UNRWA.

They also posted a video that they say shows a rifle being found in a stuffed animal in the school.

The Israeli military says that Hamas fighters are using children's toys to conceal weapons, deliberately putting children in Gaza at risk.

An IDF spokesperson issued an order in Arabic on Saturday telling residents of some areas in Khan Younis to evacuate.

The Reuters news agency reported that the areas include parts of the city center that had not previously been subject to such orders.

The US government has approved the emergency sale of tank ammunition to Israel worth around 106 million dollars. It comes as concerns mount about the high number of civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip as Israel steps up its military operations there.

The State Department announced the sale on Saturday.

The department bypassed the normal congressional review for foreign military sales. It said Secretary of State Antony Blinken had determined "an emergency exists" requiring the immediate sale because of national security interests.

The administration of President Joe Biden says it has been urging Israel to protect civilians in Gaza.

But many have died under Israeli bombardment, and even some politicians in Biden's Democratic Party are calling for more scrutiny of arms sales to Israel.

Japanese Major League Baseball superstar Ohtani Shohei has announced on Instagram that he has reached an agreement to join the Los Angeles Dodgers.

His agent's office said he was offered a 10-year, 700-million-dollar contract. US media reports said this is the largest contract in sports history.

In 2023, Ohtani's sixth season, he leads the American League with 44 homeruns.

As a pitcher he has earned 10 wins to become the first-ever MLB player to earn double-digit wins and home runs for two consecutive seasons.

Ohtani won the Most Valuable Player Award in the American League in 2021 and 2023. He is the first player in MLB history to win the title by unanimous vote more than once.

By joining the Dodgers, Ohtani is sure to seek further success that has evaded him so far -- that is, to play and win the World Series.

An international commission managing fisheries in the western and central Pacific Ocean has decided to increase the annual quota for large bluefin tuna next season.

The agreement was reached at an annual meeting of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission. The meeting was held in the Cook Islands from last Monday through Saturday.

The commission discussed how to manage the regional stocks of high-end bluefin tuna, which is a popular sushi topping.

Japan's Fisheries Agency says the meeting unanimously agreed to special measures for next season proposed by Japan and other member nations.

The agreement called for expanding the quota for large bluefin weighing 30 kilograms or more, while decreasing that for smaller fish weighing less than 30 kilograms.

The agency says that with the agreement, it now plans to increase the quota for the government-managed off-shore bluefin catch, using round haul nets and drift nets, by more than 400 tons from this season to 4,820 tons next season.

The agency plans to formally decide on the figure as early as next week. This will be the first increase in two years.

The agency also plans to propose at the next year's meeting to regularly expand the quotas on the grounds that bluefin stocks in the region have been recovering.

Japan's Environment Minister Ito Shintaro has announced support measures for developing countries to help them reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Ito attended the ministerial meeting of the COP28 UN climate change conference in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday.

Prior to the meeting, Ito noted all countries must unite to address the climate crisis, but each country faces different challenges. He said Japan hopes to provide technological, economic and financial support to resolve the difficulties.

The minister told the meeting that Japan will help developing nations in Asia draw up emissions reduction targets by using data from a new greenhouse gas observation satellite it plans to launch next year.

He also announced a public-private partnership for the development of early warning systems mainly in the Asia-Pacific region. It aims to help developing nations deal with disasters related to climate change.

The announcement comes as some environmental groups have criticized Japan for not doing enough to address climate change.

Japan is the only member of the Group of Seven nations not participating in the Powering Past Coal Alliance, which aims for a transition from coal-fired power generation.

Key words : foreign ministry condemned

Ukraine's foreign ministry has condemned Russia's plans to hold presidential elections in regions it has unilaterally declared to have annexed.

Voting is scheduled for March next year. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his candidacy for reelection on Friday.

The Putin administration says it plans to hold presidential polls in Crimea in southern Ukraine, and in four regions in the east and south. Russia unilaterally declared last year it had annexed Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry on Saturday issued a statement saying, "Holding Russian elections on Ukrainian territories grossly violates" international law, and that such polls would be "null and void."

The statement called on the international community to "resolutely condemn Russia's intention to hold presidential elections in the occupied Ukrainian territories, and to impose sanctions on those involved in their organization and conduct."

Meanwhile, a survey by a Russian independent research organization suggests support for peace talks in the country has reached its highest level.

The Levada Center released the results of its latest survey on military operations in Ukraine on Friday.

Asked if it is necessary to continue military actions or proceed to negotiations, 57 percent of respondents chose negotiations.

That was the same result as in a survey conducted in October last year, shortly after the announcement of partial mobilization of military reservists.

The ratio of respondents who chose "continuing military actions" was 36 percent.

The Putin administration has designated the Levada Center a foreign agent, but it continues to conduct independent research and analysis, despite the pressure.
