US President Donald Trump tweeted on Saturday that the United States has targeted 52 Iranian sites that it would strike if Iran attacks Americans or US assets.

Trump said that Iran "is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets" in response to the US drone strike that killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in Iraq.

Trump said the targets represent the 52 Americans who were held hostage after being seized at the US embassy in Tehran in 1979.

He said some of the targets are at "a very high level and important to Iran and the Iranian culture." He added that the US wants no more threats and that Iran will be hit very fast and very hard.

Britain says it will escort UK-flagged ships through the Strait of Hormuz after the United States killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in an airstrike.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said in a statement on Saturday that he had ordered two naval vessels to prepare for escort duties for ships through the major oil shipping route.

Wallace said he had spoken to US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and urged all parties to engage to de-escalate the situation.

He said that US forces in Iraq have been repeatedly attacked by Iran during the last few months and that Soleimani headed the operations.

Wallace added that under international law the United States is entitled to defend itself against those posing an imminent threat to its citizens.

British naval vessels last year escorted UK ships through the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian commandos seized a British-flagged tanker in the strait.

Tokyo prosecutors have issued a statement criticizing former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn for leaving Japan without permission.

The deputy head of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office, Takahiro Saito, released the statement Sunday, taking a rare step to criticize a criminal suspect.

Ghosn secretly left Japan and went to Lebanon a week ago while he was out on bail and banned from traveling abroad.

The statement says Ghosn's escape without going through legitimate procedures is in defiance of the Japanese legal system and could constitute a crime.

It criticizes Ghosn for breaching his pledge to appear in the court. It says he only tried to escape from the penalty that would be imposed by his own crimes and that such an act can never be justified.

The prosecutors appear to be trying to counter Ghosn's announcement after the escape. He said he would no longer be held hostage by a rigged Japanese justice system in which guilt is presumed and basic human rights are denied.

The statement says Japan's legal system guarantees all defendants the right to a prompt, open and fair trial.

It says the prosecutors have been taking legal procedures in order to carry out a fair and appropriate criminal trial. It says it was clear that Ghosn's rights were fully guaranteed.

Lebanese lawyers have filed a request to a court that former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn should be prosecuted for visiting Israel, which is prohibited by law in Lebanon.

Ghosn fled Japan and arrived in Lebanon secretly on Monday. He was out on bail in Japan and banned from leaving the country.

The former Nissan chief said that he would explain the situation at a news conference soon.

The Lebanese lawyers say Ghosn entered an enemy country and violated the law while he was chairman of Nissan.

Lebanon has been in conflict with Israel over regional issues, including Palestine. It forbids its citizens from visiting Israel or doing business there.

The lawyers say the authorities have detained many people who had contacts with Israel for security reasons.

One of the lawyers, Hassan Bazzi, told NHK that Ghosn should be treated the same as any others who committed a crime. He added that neither a politician nor a celebrity should be above the law.

Widespread corruption among politicians and businessmen has been criticized in Lebanon.

Ghosn, being a successful businessman, is hailed as a hero in the country but some say he should not be treated any differently because of his wealth.

China has replaced the head of its liaison office in Hong Kong amid continuing anti-government protests in the territory.

Beijing said on Saturday that it removed Wang Zhimin from the post of director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Wang was in the position for only about two years. Hong Kong media quote experts as saying his unusually short stint indicates China's top leaders were dissatisfied with the analysis by the liaison office of the months-long protests in the territory.

Wang had consistently expressed his support for the Hong Kong government during the protests. He accompanied Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam in her meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing last month.

Wang was succeeded by Luo Huining, who was the Communist Party chief in Shanxi and Qinghai provinces.

Analysts say China's top leadership is hoping that Luo, a veteran politician, will boost cooperation between Beijing and the Hong Kong government.

The auction bell at Tokyo's wholesale food market in Toyosu rang for the first time this year on Sunday. A wholesalers' representative said he hopes for a prosperous year with many blue fin tuna up for auction.

The lively auction began shortly after 5:00 a.m.

A 276-kilogram blue fin tuna caught in Japan's northern prefecture of Aomori fetched 193 million yen, or about 1.8 million dollars. It was the second highest price in history following one recorded last year.

The successful bidder was the head of a sushi restaurant chain headquartered in Tsukiji, Tokyo.

President of the chain Kiyoshi Kimura said it was expensive but he is glad to get it because it is the first new year auction in the new era, Reiwa.

He added that now his restaurants can serve the best tuna to customers.

Karate enthusiasts in western Japan have braved the cold for an annual mid-winter practice in a river.

The group in the city of Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, holds the training every year around this time.

About 30 people, aged between 5 and 77, slowly entered the Kumano River as a cold wind blew.

The participants stood up in the water and repeated thrusts and other techniques accompanied by shouts. They then pledged to work hard in the year of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

A girl in the sixth grade of elementary school said she felt uplifted, and that she hopes she will win matches in a national competition.

A 36-year-old man said this was his first mid-winter exercise and that he tried to keep up with the younger members. He added that he now feels great.
