Canada, Britain and the United States suspect that Iran shot down the Ukrainian passenger jet that crashed on Wednesday. Iran denies the allegation.

The Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 with nearly 180 people on board crashed shortly after taking off from an airport in Tehran. All the passengers and crew were killed.

The Ukrainian government says 82 Iranians and 63 Canadians were on the plane. The other people on board were from Ukraine, Sweden, Afghanistan, Germany and Britain.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday that the evidence indicates the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. He said the jet may have been downed unintentionally.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement that there is a body of information that the flight was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, and it may have been unintentional.

US President Donald Trump said he didn't think the airplane had a mechanical problem, and "somebody could have made a mistake."

US government officials reportedly say US satellites detected two surface-to-air missiles that were launched shortly before the plane exploded, and it may have been downed accidentally by an Iranian air-defense system.

The plane crashed about four hours after the Iranian missile attacks on bases hosting the US military in Iraq.

A senior Iranian aviation official told state-run TV that it is inconceivable that missiles were fired in the area where the jet went down as the air space is used by many international and domestic flights.

The official said the airliner would have broken into pieces if it had been hit by a missile, but the pilots tried to return to the airport when the plane caught fire. The official also said an aircraft at that altitude would not activate an air defense system.

The official added that Iran is ready to invite investigators from Western nations.

US President Donald Trump has told his supporters that he saved American lives by ordering the killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.

Trump was speaking on Thursday at a campaign rally in Ohio, a key battleground state in this year's presidential election.

Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq last Friday. Trump said he ordered the operation because the general was plotting to attack the US.

Trump said Soleimani was a "bad guy" and a "bloodthirsty terror," but that he is no longer a terror because he is dead.

Trump also described his own actions against Iran as "anti-Benghazi."

He was referring to a deadly attack on a US consulate in the Libyan city in 2012. The Democratic administration of President Barack Obama was criticized for its bungled response to the incident.

Trump is apparently trying to highlight differences between himself and Democrats to expand his support.

His speech was briefly interrupted by commotion caused by an antiwar protester.

The foreign ministers of Japan and Indonesia have agreed to expedite preparations to hold a joint meeting of their foreign and defense ministers soon this year.

The ministers expressed serious concerns over increased Chinese activity in the South China Sea, and confirmed close cooperation in protecting maritime security.

They also agreed to launch a framework for dialogue on Indonesia's development of railways, ports and other infrastructure, and training of personnel for industrial development. Japan agreed to offer support in these areas.

Motegi said at a joint news conference that Japan hopes to deepen cooperation with Indonesia, to further strengthen the two countries' strategic partnership.

NHK has learned that Japanese investigators have asked for Interpol's cooperation in arresting the wife of former Nissan Motor Chairman Carlos Ghosn.

Ghosn has been indicted in Japan in relation to alleged financial misconduct. He skipped bail and illegally left Japan for Lebanon late last year.

On Tuesday, prosecutors obtained an arrest warrant for his wife, Carole Ghosn, on suspicion of perjury.

They suspect she may have destroyed evidence in connection with her husband's case.

Sources told NHK that prosecutors in Tokyo asked Interpol to issue a notice for Ghosn's wife.

She is also currently in Lebanon, and the prosecutors' move is aimed at restricting her activities.

Meanwhile, prosecutors reportedly sought a court injunction on Wednesday to seize a PC used by the former Nissan chairman. Ghosn's lawyers had refused to submit it to prosecutors.

Attention is focused on how the court will respond. Defense lawyers are legally permitted to refuse such a seizure in order to protect their clients' privacy.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has praised the preparations for the marathon and race walk events that will be held in Sapporo City, northern Japan, for the 2020 Summer Games.

Bach was speaking to reporters on Thursday at the IOC headquarters in Switzerland.

The IOC proposed moving the marathon and race walk events to the city in Hokkaido Prefecture to avoid the extreme summer heat in the Japanese capital.

Japan's Olympics organizing committee, the Sapporo city government and relevant organizations are now preparing to host the two events.

Bach said they could see the experience that Sapporo has in organizing marathons and other big events. He thanked the Sapporo mayor for the city's "very effective and positive approach."

Bach also referred to Sapporo's bid to host the Winter Games in 2030. The city gave up its bid to host the 2026 Winter Games after a powerful quake. He said there is no doubt that Sapporo could organize an excellent Olympic Winter Games.

Thousands of people have taken part in an early morning race at a shrine in western Japan to become this year's "luckiest man."

The race is held on the morning of January 10 every year at Nishinomiya Shrine in Hyogo Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to Ebisu, the god of prosperity.

About 5,000 people were waiting outside the shrine before dawn on Friday. When the gate opened to the sound of drums at 6 a.m., they dashed to the main hall, roughly 230 meters away, to become the first "luckiest man" of the Reiwa era.

This year's winner is 33-year-old Yusuke Kurogi, a high school physical education teacher from Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.

The runners who came second and third were also crowned "lucky men."

The winner said he was surprised by his achievement. He added that he is looking forward to a successful year and hopes to share his good luck with other people.
