A senior US military official has warned of the fast pace of North Korea's weapons development. He says the country has conducted 67 missiles tests under its current leader Kim Jong Un.

The Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General John Hyten, referred to the threat from Pyongyang during a speech on Friday in Washington. He is the second-ranked uniformed officer in the US military.

Hyten said North Korea conducted nine missile tests under its first leader Kim Il Sung, and 22 under his successor Kim Jong Il. He said the figure increased to 67 under the current leader.

He said," North Korea has been building new missiles, new capabilities, new weapons as fast as anybody on the planet".
He said he is fully confident US missile defense systems can handle any North Korean missile threat.

Kim has suggested Pyongyang will introduce a new strategic weapon in the near future, as denuclearization talks between Washington and Pyongyang remain stalled.

Japan and South Korea are working with the US in keeping a close eye on North Korea.

The United States is pressing South Korea to shoulder more of the cost of hosting US troops in the country.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Mark Esper made the appeal in a joint commentary in Friday's edition of the Wall Street Journal.

Negotiations over the issue have been deadlocked, as Seoul is reluctant to accept Washington's demand that it pay a larger share of defense costs this year.

Pompeo and Esper wrote that South Korea covers less than one-third of costs related to hosting US forces. They said the situation constitutes a far larger burden for the American taxpayer than meets the eye.

The Secretaries say South Korea should contribute more to its defense, as a global economic powerhouse and an equal partner in keeping peace on the Korean Peninsula.

They wrote that by accepting a greater burden, South Korea can ensure the alliance remains the linchpin of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula, in Northeast Asia and across the world.

Meanwhile, Tokyo and Washington are expected to begin full-scale talks later this year on payments by Japan for the hosting of US troops.

The Trump administration is also expected to push Japan to pay more for its US bases and other military costs.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Myanmar for talks with the country's top officials, including de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

On Friday, he arrived in the capital Naypyidaw, where he was greeted by President Win Myint.

Xi's two-day visit marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Myanmar's government says Xi discussed strengthening bilateral ties in separate talks with State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and the president.

China wants to build an economic corridor through Myanmar, linking inland China with the Indian Ocean, as part of Beijing's Belt and Road initiative.

In an article sent to Myanmar newspapers ahead of his visit, Xi said China wants to build a community with closer ties and a shared future with Myanmar.

On Saturday, Xi is scheduled to attend a meeting of representatives from both governments aiming for agreements on infrastructure projects.

US President Donald Trump has added two well-known attorneys to his legal team to help defend him in his Senate impeachment trial, which starts in earnest next week.

The White House named the members of the legal team on Friday. They include former independent counsel Ken Starr and prominent lawyer Alan Dershowitz.

Starr investigated former president Bill Clinton and helped to pave the way for his 1998 impeachment.

Dershowitz was part of the team that helped to get American football superstar and actor O.J. Simpson acquitted of murder charges in a highly-publicized trial in the 1990s.

Trump has been charged with abusing his power by pressuring Ukraine for personal political gain, and obstructing Congress by attempting to prevent an investigation into his conduct.

With Republicans holding a majority in the Senate, the president is widely expected to be acquitted.

But because the impeachment trial is taking place in the same year as a presidential election, Trump appears eager to have a strong legal team that can prove his innocence to the voting public.

A long-running joke that orange juice flows like water in western Japan's Ehime Prefecture has come true.

Two faucets serving up the fruit juice have been set up at an orange festival that started in a department store in the city of Matsuyama on Saturday.

The joke that orange juice comes out of faucets in the prefecture started outside Ehime Prefecture, which is known as one of Japan's largest producers of oranges and other citrus fruit.

Families and other visitors took the opportunity to serve themselves a glass of fresh orange juice free of charge.

A woman in her 30s said she was surprised to see faucets producing orange juice and at no cost.

The event will run through Sunday.
