The World Health Organization's Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing on Tuesday. They are believed to have discussed how to control the coronavirus outbreak, which has sickened more than 4,500 and killed over 100 people in China.

Chinese health authorities announced on Tuesday that deaths caused by the new strain of coronavirus have increased to 106, mostly in Hubei Province.

The Foreign Ministry said Tedros offered to provide necessary assistance to China, and Wang promised transparency in working with the WHO and others.

The WHO announced last Thursday that the outbreak does not constitute a public health emergency of international concern.

But the organization will review its assessment following Tedros' visit.

Chinese authorities have imposed a nationwide ban on wildlife trade until the coronavirus outbreak subsides.

Chinese experts detected a new type of coronavirus in samples taken from a market in the central city of Wuhan.

The market has a number of stores that sell wild animals, which are suspected of being the source of the virus.

Authorities issued a statement on Sunday strictly prohibiting wildlife trade at marketplaces, supermarkets, restaurants and elsewhere across the nation. The statement warns that violators will be punished in accordance with the law.

A Chinese health expert has warned that even people who show only mild symptoms of the new coronavirus are capable of spreading it.

Li Xingwang, a member of the Chinese government's team of medical experts, told reporters on Tuesday that initially, many patients showed symptoms such as fever, lethargy and coughing, with some developing breathing problems and respiratory failure.

He said there are now more patients with mild symptoms such as low fever and slight coughing who show no signs of pneumonia.

Li added that people with only mild symptoms, as well as those who are infected but have not yet developed symptoms, are capable of spreading the virus. He says this has hampered efforts to prevent and control infections.

At the same news conference, Jiao Yahui of the National Health Commission revealed that two hospitals now under construction in Wuhan are scheduled to be completed on February 2 and 5.

She said the two hospitals can accommodate a total of 2,000 to 2,300 in-patients.

Jiao also revealed that a team of 4,130 doctors and nurses are already in Hubei Province, and that an additional 1,800 are to arrive in Wuhan on Tuesday.

Japan's government has added pneumonia caused by a new strain of coronavirus to its list of designated infectious diseases.

The Cabinet approved an ordinance on Tuesday giving the illness the designation under the country's infectious disease and quarantine laws.

The designation will allow the compulsory hospitalization of people who are infected with the virus.

Prefectural governors will be authorized to advise such people to be admitted to specified medical institutions which are equipped to handle infections. Those who don't follow the advice will be forcibly hospitalized.

Authorities will also be able to instruct patients to take a leave of absence from work for a certain period. All medical costs will be covered by public funds.

Under the quarantine law, officials at airports and seaports will become able to instruct those suspected of infection to undergo tests and medical examinations.
Anyone who refuses can be penalized.

The ordinance is expected to go into effect on February 7, but officials say the government will cover hospitalization costs before that.

This is the fifth time Japan has invoked the designation. It's the first since the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, in 2014.

A maker of face masks in central Japan is boosting its production of high-end masks amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The mesh product maker Clever in Aichi Prefecture has been flooded with orders for the face masks since late last week.

The maker says the eight-layer masks it has been making for the last seven years filter out viruses, including the new coronavirus, and the tiny airborne pollutants known as PM 2.5. They also have a deodorizing effect.

The masks sell for more than 120 dollars, but the company says they remain effective even after being washed as many as 100 times.

It says it has increased output fivefold, but 50 masks a day is the maximum production rate, as they are made completely by hand.

Customers currently have to wait one to two weeks. The maker says its clients include people in Wuhan.

President Eri Ishibashi says she was surprised at the surge in orders. She says she hopes to deliver the masks to their worried customers as soon as possible.

The US Navy has sailed a warship through disputed waters in the South China Sea to challenge China's unilateral claim of sovereignty in the area.

The Navy's Seventh Fleet told NHK that the USS Montgomery conducted what it calls a freedom of navigation operation on Saturday where the Spratly Islands are located.

The Philippines, Vietnam, three other countries and Taiwan claim sovereignty over the islands.

The US Department of Defense is on the alert against China's military build-up in the area. China has deployed anti-ship missiles and electronic jammers there.

Seventh Fleet spokesperson Joseph Keiley said, "The United States will fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows, regardless of the location of excessive maritime claims."

The last time the US military revealed that it conducted such an operation was in November.

It is stepping up the pace of warship deployments to the South China Sea. It has also deployed navy drones in Guam to better monitor Chinese troops.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has reportedly rejected a request from US President Donald Trump to hold phone talks on his peace plan.

Turkey's government-affiliated Anadolu news agency reported Abbas' response on Monday, citing a senior official of the Palestinian autonomous authority.

The report says Trump made the request a few days ago, asking to discuss the Middle East peace plan he is expected to announce on Tuesday.

Relations between Palestine and the Trump administration broke down about two years ago when Washington unilaterally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, despite strong objection from Palestinians.

The Palestinians are expected to react angrily to the US peace plan and call for protests if it turns out to be in favor of Israel.

The US military has confirmed that one of its aircraft has crashed in southeastern Afghanistan, but denied the involvement of the Taliban.

A spokesperson for US troops in Afghanistan said in a statement on Monday that a Bombardier E-11A aircraft crashed in the Ghazni province earlier in the day.

The US military uses the aircraft to relay communication between troops in mountainous areas where radio waves are difficult to reach.

The number of casualties was not immediately clear, although US media reported there were several people on board.

A Taliban spokesperson told NHK that the group's fighters strategically targeted the US military aircraft and brought it down.

However, the US military disputed the claim, saying that "while the cause of crash is under investigation, there are no indications the crash was caused by enemy fire."

Japan's movie box-office revenue hit a record high last year.

The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan said on Tuesday that theaters took in 261.1 billion yen, or about 2.4 billion dollars, in 2019. That's up about 17 percent from the previous year.

The previous high was about 2.2 billion dollars in 2016.

The highest-grossing film was a Japanese animated film, "Weathering With You," by director Makoto Shinkai, at about 128 million dollars.

Another animated film, "Frozen II", came in second at about 116 million dollars.

The third was "Aladdin," a live-action remake of a Disney animated film, at about 111 million dollars.

The association attributed the increase to the success of animated films and sequels of popular movies.
