Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the Japan-US alliance is an immovable pillar for protecting world peace.

On January 19, 1960, the revised Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security was signed by Abe's grandfather, Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, and US President Dwight Eisenhower.

The pact obligates the United States to protect Japan while allowing the US military to have bases in Japan.

Abe spoke at a commemorative event to mark the pact's 60th anniversary in Tokyo on Sunday. He called the treaty an immovable pillar that safeguards peace and secures prosperity.

He pledged to further strengthen and deepen the alliance in both outer space and cyberspace, and said the pact should survive for the next 100 years.

The commander of the US Forces in Japan, Lieutenant General Kevin Schneider, said the importance of the alliance is growing stronger every day as the security environment in the region is evolving rapidly.

Eisenhower's granddaughter, Mary, said the courage and foresight of Kishi and Eisenhower have been passed on for 60 years, and she hopes bilateral relations will develop further.

US President Donald Trump has called the Japan-US treaty of mutual cooperation and security essential. January 19 marks 60 years since the revised pact was signed.

Trump said in a statement that over the past 60 years "the rock-solid alliance between our two great nations has been essential to peace, security, and prosperity for the United States, Japan, the Indo-Pacific region and the entire world."

He also said that, "As the security environment continues to evolve and new challenges arise, it is essential that our alliance further strengthen and deepen."

Trump added he was confident that Japan's contributions to the mutual security will continue to grow and that the alliance will continue to thrive.

US Department of State Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus also said Washington will urge Tokyo to contribute more to the cost of keeping US forces in Japan.

She discussed the equality of burden-sharing in an interview with NHK on Friday.

Authorities in the Chinese city of Wuhan say the total number of people infected with the new coronavirus linked to a pneumonia outbreak in the city is now 62.

Health officials in the inland city announced on Sunday that they had confirmed 17 new cases of the disease. Two people have died, eight remain seriously ill, while 19 have already recovered and left hospital.

The news comes as millions of Chinese people are preparing to travel during the week-long Lunar New Year holidays, which begin on January 24. Airport and train officials have beefed up their scrutiny by using devices designed to measure the temperature of travelers.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post newspaper reported that at least three suspected infections with the virus have been found in mainland China outside Wuhan. The paper said two suspected cases were reported in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, and one in Shanghai. It said the three people involved were treated at hospitals.

If the reported infections are confirmed, they would be the first cases of the disease in the mainland outside Wuhan.

Japan announced the first infection with the new coronavirus on Thursday. A man of Chinese nationality living in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo, was confirmed to have been infected after returning from a visit to Wuhan. Thailand has confirmed that two women Chinese tourists from Wuhan were infected.

A Chinese woman has sparked outrage on social media by posting photos of herself and a friend with a luxury car in the grounds of Beijing's Forbidden City.

The UNESCO World Heritage site was used as a palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The museum houses more than 1.8 million items and is one of the Chinese capital's leading tourist attractions.

Vehicles are banned, and visitors need to make reservations to enter the site.

The two women were apparently given permission to drive the SUV into the grounds when the museum was closed.

The photos were posted on the social media platform Weibo. Some users wrote that the palace is not a parking lot for the privileged and they can't stop being angry.

The Chinese authorities closed the women's Weibo accounts and have deleted the critical comments.

Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan will stop using their "Royal Highness" titles beginning this spring.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Saturday that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be working members of the royal family. They will cease to receive public funds.

Earlier this month, the couple expressed their wishes to stop being senior members of the family.

It is said that they will continue supporting various charity organizations as individuals with permission from Queen Elizabeth, upholding her values.

The Queen said in her statement that following many months of conversations and discussions, she is pleased that the family have found a "constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family."

She continued to say that "Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family."

Then she added that her whole family's hope is that the agreement allows them to "start building a happy and peaceful new life."

A week has passed since the major eruption of the Philippines' Taal volcano. Authorities in the country continue to urge people to be on the alert.

The volcano on Luzon Island, located about 60 kilometers from the capital, Manila, erupted on January 12. It sent smoke to a height of 15,000 meters and spewed volcanic ash that blanketed the region. The eruption is believed to have been a steam blast.

The authorities are instructing people within 14 kilometers from the volcano to evacuate. They said some 70,000 people have so far left their homes.

The Philippines Agriculture Department said crops, including rice and maize, have been damaged. It added that the monetary damage has reached about 60 million dollars.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said on Saturday that the smoke height had fallen to about 800 meters, but volcanic activity and earthquakes are continuing. The institute warned of further eruptions and maintained the alert level at the second highest level, 4.

Japan's defense minister has decided to hold a meeting with defense chiefs from Pacific island nations in connection with China's growing maritime presence in the region.

The ministry is to invite officials, including the defense ministers of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Tonga, to the conference in Tokyo in April. Invitations are expected to extend to representatives of the United States, Australia, and France.

It is the first time for the Defense Ministry to host an international conference of multiple nations' ministers.

Participants will likely discuss security issues toward achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific region amid China's maritime activities in the East China Sea and elsewhere. They are also expected to talk about cooperation between the countries in the event of natural disasters.

Japan will start issuing passports featuring art by ukiyoe master Katsushika Hokusai for people applying as early as February.

The new passport has 24 landscapes from the "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" series from the 19th century. The prints serve as background for the visa pages used for entry and exit stamps. The design of the front page remains the same.

The Foreign Ministry decided to redesign the passport four years ago. It wanted to incorporate the latest anti-forgery techniques as the country prepares to host the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The ministry says the complicated design will not only strengthen counterfeit-prevention measures but also help to introduce Japanese culture.
