Officials of China's National Health Commission say 108 more people died from the new coronavirus on Monday, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 1,016.

Some deaths were reported outside the most seriously affected province of Hubei, including the cities of Beijing and Tianjin. It's the first time the death toll has exceeded 100 in a single day.

Chinese health authorities also say 2,478 more people were confirmed infected on Monday, bringing the total number of patients in China to 42,638.

The Communist Party Committee in Hubei announced on Tuesday that the province's two top health authority officials have been dismissed.

No reasons were given, but the officials are believed to have been held responsible for the spread of the coronavirus.

Authorities in the city of Wuhan in Hubei say they have banned people with fevers from seeking treatment at medical institutions outside of districts where they live.

They also say they will step up controls of residential communities.

More than 1,500 people were confirmed infected in Wuhan on Monday alone. The city is working to curb the spread of the virus by restricting people's movements as much as possible.

China's President Xi Jinping has stressed the need to prevent large-scale layoffs amid concerns about the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on his country's economy.

Business activities resumed on Monday in Beijing, Shanghai and other parts of the country after a hiatus of about half a month. But things appear to be relatively slow, as people are asked to work from home.

China's state-run broadcaster CCTV reported that Xi on Monday visited a medical institution in Beijing where coronavirus patients are being treated.

Wearing a surgical mask, Xi reportedly talked to medical staff and discussed the response with government officials.

The Chinese leader called for thorough anti-infection measures and stressed the need to minimize the outbreak's impact on the economy.

He said the government will promote the resumption of business activities and that financial support is necessary for hard-hit companies.

The move is seen as part of efforts by Xi to reassure companies and workers in China amid fears of the economic impact from the coronavirus outbreak.

The head of the World Health Organization has warned that the recent coronavirus cases in Europe could turn out to be a "bigger fire."

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva on Monday that the overall pattern has not changed. He said 99 percent of the reported cases are in China.

He also said that in recent days there were cases of human-to-human transmission from people with no travel history to China. Some of those cases were reportedly in France and Britain.

Ghebreyesus added, "The detection of this small number of cases could be the spark that becomes a bigger fire."

The director-general stated further that the WHO will continue working with all countries to prevent and detect new coronavirus cases.

An advance team of international experts arrived in China to investigate the coronavirus outbreak on Monday. The team is led by the WHO.

WHO officials said the advance team will share information about the virus and the country's medical system with Chinese authorities. The team will start its investigation as soon as possible.

Japanese health officials are retesting people who returned home on board the first government-chartered flight from Wuhan for the new coronavirus.

The first charter flight brought 206 Japanese people from the virus-hit Chinese city on January 29.

Since then, many of the expatriates who tested negative for the virus and exhibited no symptoms have stayed in accommodations near Tokyo arranged by the government.

The health ministry began to test all of the people again on Tuesday when a maximum 12.5-day incubation period of the virus determined by the World Health Organization ends.

The evacuees will likely be allowed to go home as early as Wednesday if their tests come back negative.

Those repatriated on subsequent chartered planes will likely follow the same procedures as the first group.

Japan has confirmed two more cases of infection with the new coronavirus. The patients are both Japanese nationals who were among those evacuated on government-chartered flights from the Chinese city of Wuhan late last month.

One of them is a male resident of Wuhan in his 50s. He returned to Japan on the first chartered flight on January 29.

The other is a resident of Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo. The man, who is in his 40s, was repatriated on the second chartered flight on January 30.

The results of the tests they had right after returning home were negative. But they later exhibited symptoms, including fever, and were confirmed infected in subsequent tests.

The government has also arranged two other chartered flights for evacuations from China's inland province of Hubei.

The latest cases have brought the total number of confirmed infections among those repatriated on the four chartered flights to 12.

The country's Ministry of Health and Welfare issued the advisory on Tuesday. It urges people to minimize travel to Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Taiwan.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry is also calling on its citizens to leave China's inland province of Hubei and refrain from travels to any part of China. The number of infections is spiking in Hubei, including the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak.

Thailand's government says it will not allow passengers to disembark from the cruise ship Westerdam, citing concerns over a possible spread of the new coronavirus.

The announcement was made on Tuesday after the American operator of the Westerdam said the ship will enter a port in eastern Thailand on Thursday to let its passengers off.

The Thai government said it will offer food, water, and other supplies to the vessel, if necessary.

The ship left Hong Kong on February 1, carrying more than 2,000 people. It was later denied entry to several ports, including in Taiwan and Japan's Okinawa.

The Japanese government last week decided to deny entry to the Westerdam, saying that one of its passengers was suspected of being infected with the coronavirus.
