Health authorities in China are reporting an additional 109 fatalities, taking the total number of deaths past 2,300. The number of infections now exceeds 76,000. Most have been in Hubei province where the outbreak began.

Chinese officials say the virus is spreading in several prisons in Hubei, Zhejiang and Shandong Provinces.
They say more than 500 inmates and guards have been infected.

The World Health Organization says there is no established treatment for the disease. But it's waiting for the results of two clinical trials, including a combination of antiviral drugs used to treat HIV.

Results are expected in three weeks. And Chinese officials say clinical trials using a candidate vaccine could begin in late April.

In South Korea, authorities have designated the southern city of Daegu a "special care zone."

The total number of cases in the country now exceeds 340.

Officials say more than half of the patients have been confirmed in Daegu.

Most of them reportedly attended the same church as a woman who had earlier tested positive. They've termed it a "super-spreading event".

The virus has now spread to more than two dozen countries and territories. Italian media are reporting the first death there -- a 78-year-old man in the northern part of the country. They say he had no record of travel to China.

China's ruling communist party says efforts to contain the coronavirus outbreak are producing results, but that the country is yet to reach a turning point.

China Central Television says on Friday, President Xi Jinping chaired a meeting of the party's decision-making body, which agreed the situation in Hubei Province, and particularly the city of Wuhan, remains severe and complex.

Authorities in Wuhan said on Friday that they will restyle hotels and factories to create an extra 19 makeshift hospitals.

The facilities, which will be ready by Tuesday, will be used to quarantine people with mild symptoms.

Wuhan already has 13 such makeshift hospitals. Officials say the extra facilities will mean the city has space to hospitalize 30,000 patients.

Democratic candidates in the US presidential race held rallies on the eve of the party's caucuses in the western state of Nevada. On the same day, President Trump also campaigned in the state.

The third state's selection process to become the Democratic Party nominee in 2020 is scheduled for Saturday.

Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who gained attention by coming out on top in the first contest in Iowa, called on supporters to unite to remove President Trump from office.

Senator Elizabeth Warren hosted Julian Castro, a former Democratic contender who dropped out of the race. He has close ties with Hispanic communities which are said to make up about 30 percent of Nevada's population.

Former vice president Joe Biden appeared at a labor union gathering and appealed to the party's traditional base.

Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders, who leads in the Nevada polls, has already started campaigning in California for the crucial March 3 "Super Tuesday" set of primaries and caucuses.

Nevada has a diverse population compared to Iowa and New Hampshire. A strong showing with minority voters could be a determining factor in the race.

President Trump also rallied in Nevada on Friday. He said Democrats are talking about social security but jibed "they can't count votes," referring to the confusion with vote counting in Iowa.

The US government has announced that it is preparing to sign a peace agreement with the Taliban.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Friday that US negotiators came to an understanding with the Taliban on a significant and nationwide reduction in violence across Afghanistan.

He said upon successful implementation the US will be ready to sign the peace agreement on February 29.

The Taliban also said in a statement that following lengthy negotiations, the two sides agreed to sign the accord on February 29.

US President Donald Trump has vowed to end what is called "the longest war in US history."

The US suspended peace talks with the Taliban following a car bomb attack in Kabul in September last year that killed a US soldier.

As there are reportedly different factions in the Taliban, it remains to be seen whether the violence reduction agreement will be fully implemented.
