Health authorities in China say 142 deaths from the new coronavirus were confirmed on Saturday, mostly in Hubei Province. That brought the death toll in mainland China to 1,665.

The authorities said 2,009 new infections were confirmed, including ones detected through clinical diagnosis. The total number of those infected in mainland China has risen to 68,500.

Health officials in Hubei Province, the epicenter of the outbreak, say that 1,957 patients in the province are in critical condition.

Chinese health authorities say it takes a long time for people to be admitted to hospitals after becoming ill, so many of them are already in serious condition when they are admitted.

Health authorities in Hubei have converted gyms and other facilities into nine temporary medical centers to house patients with mild symptoms. That is part of efforts to allow people with more serious symptoms to receive treatment at hospitals.

The Chinese government is scrambling to improve the medical system in the coronavirus-hit province of Hubei and to prepare for an expected mass movement of people across the country after the Lunar New Year holiday.

The death toll from the virus has reached 1,523 in mainland China. More than 66,000 people have been confirmed infected there.

Hubei has recorded over 54,000 cases of infection. The surging number of cases has overwhelmed the province's medical system, leading to an increase in the figure of seriously ill patients.

The government has sent more than 25,000 medical workers from across the nation to Hubei to ease the situation.

Companies and schools around China, excluding Hubei, are scheduled to reopen sometime from later this month through next month. More than 300 million people are expected to travel from their hometowns to cities.

Authorities have ordered all people returning to Beijing to place themselves under self-quarantine at home for two weeks. The capital has confirmed 375 patients.

Meanwhile, state-run media on Saturday reported the detailed content of remarks by President Xi Jinping at a meeting of Communist Party leaders on February 3.

The outlets say President Xi ordered on January 7 that the spread of the virus must be contained. That was before the government started taking significant measures against the outbreak.

Analysts say the party leadership is hoping to deflect accusations that it was slow in responding to the situation.

The US State Department has chartered two airplanes to evacuate hundreds of American citizens on a quarantined cruise ship anchored off the Japanese city of Yokohama.

The US Embassy in Tokyo says the two planes will arrive in Japan on Sunday evening.

The American passengers and crew on the Diamond Princess will leave the ship and fly back to the United States as soon as preparations are complete.

Four hundred sixteen of the approximately 2,600 passengers are Americans, second only in number to the Japanese passengers. There are also 12 US crewmembers onboard.
Japanese authorities say more than 280 passengers on the ship have been confirmed to be infected.

According to an email the US Embassy sent to the American passengers and crew onboard, those who decide to return to the US will have to remain in quarantine for an additional 14 days.

Meanwhile, another private-sector ferry has joined Japan's Self-Defense Forces in efforts to provide support for people onboard the Diamond Princess.

The ferry serves as a second base for about 150 SDF personnel engaged in such tasks as disinfecting the interior of the cruise ship.

Japan's Defense Ministry is also calling up medical reservists to give support to those who come out of quarantine.

An American passenger from the Westerdam cruise ship now docked in Cambodia has been confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus. The vessel had been turned away by five governments.

The 83-year-old woman left the vessel at the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville on Friday and flew to Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur.

A quarantine check she received at the Malaysian airport raised suspicions that she may be infected with the virus. She later tested positive for the virus. But she is reportedly in stable condition.

Cambodian health officials earlier said they had confirmed no cases of infection after checking 20 Westerdam passengers who complained of poor health.

The cruise ship left Hong Kong on February 1, carrying more than 2,200 passengers and crew. It was refused a port call by Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Guam, and Thailand due to fears that some of the passengers may be infected with the virus.

The ship arrived in the Cambodian port on Thursday. Disembarkation began on the following day.

The operator of the Westerdam says 236 passengers and more than 700 crew are still onboard the vessel.

North Korean state media has reported that Kim Jong Un has observed the birthday of his late father, in its first report on the country's leader in 21 days.

Korean Central Television said on Sunday that Kim visited the mausoleum of Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang earlier in the day to mark the late leader's 78th birthday.

The report comes as North Korea has suspended flights and trains to and from China to block the spread of the new coronavirus.

North Korea's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, reported on Saturday that the country has not confirmed any cases of the virus.

But the paper on Sunday urged people to remain vigilant. It said some people seem unconcerned, thinking the virus will not enter the country because all its borders have been sealed.

Analysts believe Kim is in charge of measures against the spread of the coronavirus.

A manufacturer of alcohol antiseptic solutions in China has been unable to increase production to meet surging demand due to a shortage of employees.

Japanese sanitation product manufacturer Saraya's branch in Shanghai has received three to five times the usual number of orders since the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

The firm says only one-third of the usual workforce is at its factory that ships alcohol antiseptic products to the Chinese market.

It says many employees have not been able to return from their Lunar New Year holiday trips because of travel bans, and that temporary workers are also scarce.

The workers at the factory have been working without holidays since January, but they are managing to operate only one of the five production lines.

The production has slowed also due to a delay in the delivery of containers and labels.

Saraya Shanghai Biotech president, Takafumi Inazu, said the factory is operating at an estimated 30 to 40 percent of its capacity. He said the operation is expected to return to normal in late February to early March.

Many other Shanghai branches of Japanese companies also have difficulties in resuming normal operation, with many employees forced to remain at home.

Toyota Motor has decided to resume production in stages at three of its four factories in China. Their operations have been suspended due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

The automaker will restart factories in Guangzhou and Changchun on Monday and a plant in Tianjin on Tuesday. The firm says it will ensure the safety of employees.

The resumption will come about two weeks later than Toyota's initial plan to restart the factories by February 4 after the Lunar New Year holiday.

But the company says output levels at those factories will, for the time being, remain at roughly half of the figures before the suspension.

The company adds it will further delay the restart of a factory in Chengdu to February 24 or later.

Thirty-one civilians were killed in Yemen on Saturday in retaliatory air strikes carried out by the Saudi-led coalition.

Yemeni government forces backed by Saudi Arabia and other countries have been fighting Iran-aligned Houthi insurgents for nearly five years.

The United Nations says the airstrikes hit the northern province of Al-Jawf.

Anti-government forces say they used a surface-to-air missile to shoot down a Saudi fighter jet on Friday.

The United Nations said it was "shocking" that after five years of conflict the warring parties are still failing to uphold their responsibility to protect civilians under international humanitarian law.

Nearly 20,000 civilians are believed to have been killed or injured in the civil war.

Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have been negotiating behind closed doors to end the war. But the fighting in Yemen has intensified since mid-January, especially in northern regions.

Elementary and junior high school students took part in the junior division race, while participants with disabilities took part in the "para" division race.

Many spectators cheered, as participants skied through the course that is surrounded by buildings.

One of elementary school participants said she enjoyed the rare opportunity to ski in the middle of Sapporo. She said she was encouraged by the cheering crowd.
