Japan's health ministry has confirmed that a woman infected with the new coronavirus has died. She was in her 80s and lived in Kanagawa prefecture, located just outside Tokyo. Her death marks the first virus-related death in the country.

Health minister Katsunobu Kato said: "She exhibited symptoms on January 22 and was admitted to a hospital in Kanagawa on February 1. She was declared dead today. After that, tests confirmed that she had contracted the new coronavirus."

The health ministry added that the woman reportedly never traveled abroad.

Her son-in-law, who is a taxi driver, was also found to be infected with the virus.

Health ministry officials say the man says he didn't visit the Chinese provinces of Hubei or Zhejiang during the two weeks before he began exhibiting symptoms. They also say he denies driving any foreign customers during this period.

Another new case in Japan is a doctor in his 50s. He works at a hospital in western Japan.

A man in his 20s, who lives just outside Tokyo has also been infected.

Health ministry officials are still investigating how they contracted the virus.

Japan's health minister Katsunobu Kato says his ministry is working to identify the infection routes of the new coronavirus after the first virus-related death in the country on Thursday.

Kato told reporters on Friday that people must be concerned about becoming infected.

He appealed to the elderly and those with chronic health problems to call consultation hotlines if they have symptoms such as coughing and fever. He said callers who are suspected of having the virus will be referred to medical institutions.

Asked if he believes person-to-person infections are taking place in Japan, Kato replied that ministry officials have no evidence to change their current assessment that there is no epidemic.

But he said that they cannot rule out the possibility of the virus spreading further, and they are making preparations to treat patients in the event of an epidemic.

Kato added that the ministry plans to send experts from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases to a hospital in Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan. A doctor and a patient at the hospital have been confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus.

Officials of Japan's Okinawa Prefecture say they've confirmed an infection of the new coronavirus, the first such case in the Kyushu region including Okinawa.

The officials said on Friday that a female taxi driver in her 60s tested positive for the virus.

They say she very likely had contact with passengers of the cruise ship Diamond Princess, which called at Naha Port on February 1.

The ship later went to Yokohama Port, but has been quarantined there because of an onboard viral outbreak.

The case in Okinawa was detected after the prefecture checked the health of about 200 people who may have had contact with passengers.

The driver had a cough and was tested for the virus after a doctor suspected she had pneumonia.

Japan's health ministry says some elderly passengers on the Diamond Princess have disembarked from the quarantined cruise ship, after testing negative for the new coronavirus.

Eleven people left the ship on Friday afternoon. They later arrived at a government-designated facility in Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo.

The health ministry decided on Thursday to allow passengers aged 80 or older to disembark, if they either had chronic illnesses or were staying in windowless cabins. The individuals were only permitted to leave if they tested negative for the virus.

The elderly people will be asked to serve the remainder of their quarantine period at the government facility. The quarantine period will end on Wednesday.

The health ministry says 218 people on the Diamond Princess have contracted the coronavirus. They are being brought on shore for medical treatment.

There are 3,400 people still on board. They have been placed under quarantine. The passengers are mostly confined to their cabins.

Chinese health authorities have pledged to step up efforts to protect medical personnel from the new coronavirus as the number of infected cases of these staff is rising.

The National Health Commission said on Friday that the death toll from the infection has risen to 1,380. It also says the overall number of infected cases in the country has reached 63,851.

The figure grew by 5,090 on Thursday alone. They included people who showed pneumonia-like symptoms when X-rayed but have not been confirmed by a virus test to be infected.

The vice-minister of the commission, Zeng Yixin, said 1,716 of the infected people are medical personnel and six of them have died.

More than 80 percent of these cases are reported in Hubei Province, where the outbreak originated.

Zeng said the commission will take measures to minimize infections inside medical institutions.

The commission announced that the government will earmark about 80 billion yuan, or roughly 12 billion dollars, to contain the outbreak.

Japan's Nissan Motor is temporarily halting output at its largest factory in the country as the coronavirus outbreak roils global supply chains.

The Fukuoka plant in southwestern Japan makes SUVs for export and other passenger cars. It accounts for nearly half the automaker's domestic production.

But company officials say they cannot get some parts from China due to the coronavirus.

A worker clocking off at the factory after a night-shift told NHK, "I hope things will calm down soon." Another factory worker said: "There's no sign of an end to this situation. I am worried how long it will last."

The firm says it will suspend production at the plant on February 17 and 24. It will also shorten operations by two hours a day from the 18 to the 21.

Relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea have strongly urged the Japanese government to take measures to repatriate their loved ones as soon as possible.

The relatives, including Shigeo Iizuka and Akihiro Arimoto, met Prime Minister Shunzo Abe and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga on Friday.

Shigeo Iizuka is the head of the relatives' group, and Akihiro Arimoto is the father of abductee Keiko Arimoto.

Abe offered his condolences to Arimoto whose wife died on February 3. Abe said they had fought together to bring back the abductees since he served as a secretary to his father, the former Foreign Minister Shintaro Abe.

Abe said after the death of Keiko's mother, he has renewed his wish to make every effort to bring back the abductees as soon as possible. He also said many family members have passed away.

Abe said that coordination with other countries is vital but the abductee issue is basically Japan's problem. He also said that he will do everything, including the realization of a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

After the meeting, Iizuka said the relatives will closely follow the government's moves.
