Japan's government has decided to help Ukraine remove rubble, landmines and unexploded bombs as part of additional aid to the nation and its neighboring countries.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio announced last month that Japan would give 100 million dollars in additional emergency humanitarian aid. The government on Tuesday decided on how this aid would be spent.

Japan will try to secure safe passage of evacuees from Ukraine and provide food, daily necessities, medicine and other relief supplies. These goods will be provided through the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, other international groups and Japanese nongovernmental organizations.

Japan will answer to Ukraine's growing needs to dispose of rubble, landmines and dud explosives. It will also help to restore agricultural production by distributing seeds and through other means.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu told reporters on Tuesday that Japan will continue to support the people of Ukraine and stand by them by working with G7 member countries and the rest of the global community.

Japan's government has banned the export of luxury goods to Russia. The move is to pressure oligarchs -- wealthy tycoons who are close to President Vladimir Putin.

The ban took effect from Tuesday. It applies to 19 items, including cars worth over 6 million yen or about 49,000 dollars, and motorcycles valued at more than 600,000 yen or about 4,900 dollars. High-end whiskey and watches worth over 40,000 yen or about 330 dollars are also on the list.

Japan already bans in principle Russia-bound exports of about 300 items. These include products that can be converted to military use and general-purpose semiconductor chips.

Items used for humanitarian purposes are exempted.

Japanese automaker Honda Motor says it will collaborate with General Motors to develop a series of affordable electric vehicles.

Honda announced on Tuesday that it will expand its tie-up with GM, with the aim of putting new EVs on the worldwide market in 2027, starting in North America.

Vehicles will be designed so they can be produced at either Honda or GM plants. The firms hope this will allow them to turn out millions of units, cutting costs and lowering the sticker price.

The companies will also explore collaboration in the field of advanced battery technology. The EVs will be powered by batteries developed by GM.

Honda president and CEO Mibe Toshihiro said, "Honda and GM will build on our successful technology collaboration to help achieve a dramatic expansion in the sales of electric vehicles."

The move comes after an announcement by Honda last month that it will also collaborate on EVs with Sony Group.
