Japan, the United States, Australia and India have delivered the first batch of coronavirus vaccines under their Quad framework to Cambodia.

The 325,000 doses were made in India and handed over on Tuesday at a ceremony in Phnom Penh attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and representatives from the four countries.

Indian Ambassador to Cambodia Devyani Khobragade said the Quad members will fulfill their responsibility by providing vaccines to their partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

Hun Sen expressed his appreciation for the vaccines.

The Quad was formed with the aim of bringing about a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The four nations agreed at their summit in March 2021 that they will cooperate in financing and producing vaccines for developing countries.

The Quad members are believed to be trying to counter China, which is looking to boost its influence in the Indo-Pacific region through so-called vaccine diplomacy.

The Japanese government plans to speed up arrangements for a summit of the Quad framework made up of Japan, the United States, Australia and India.

This comes after US President Joe Biden told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their online summit on Monday that he is looking forward to meeting the Indian leader in Japan around May 24.

In addition to a Quad summit, the government wants to set up one-on-one talks between Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Biden.

Officials also hope to materialize a meeting between the president and families of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.

Separately, arrangements are underway for New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to come to Japan for talks with Kishida this month.

Kishida may visit Southeast Asia and Europe during the holiday period from late April.

Possible destinations include Indonesia and Thailand, chairs of the Group of 20 and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum this year respectively.

Kishida hopes to reaffirm international unity against Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and call for cooperation in realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The US Navy has disclosed that one of its nuclear-powered aircraft carriers is conducting a joint drill with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force in the Sea of Japan.

The 7th Fleet told NHK on Tuesday that the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is conducting "routine bilateral operations."

The fleet said the operations are to reassure "allies and partners of the US commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific," adding that "our training enhances the credibility of conventional deterrence."

In March, the Navy conducted an exercise involving carrier-based aircraft from the Abraham Lincoln in the Yellow Sea, west of the Korean Peninsula, after a series of North Korean ballistic missile launches.

North Korea is believed to be trying to raise public morale ahead of what would have been the 110th birthday of the country's founder Kim Il Sung on Friday.

Analysts are warning that Pyongyang could launch more ballistic missiles or carry out its seventh nuclear test.

The war in Ukraine is sending the price of raw materials soaring and Japanese companies are feeling the pinch.
The producer price index rose again in March, continuing a months-long trend.

The Bank of Japan says the cost of goods traded among companies was up 9.5 percent from a year earlier. That makes it 13 straight months the year-on-year figure has increased. In February, it hit a pace not seen in more than 40 years.

The Russian attacks on Ukraine have stoked fears about the crude-oil supply, which has triggered a rise in the prices of petroleum products and electric power.

The producer price index includes 109 food and drink categories, and 70 are more expensive than a year ago.

One such category is imported chicken. Japan gets a majority of its imported poultry from Brazil, but producers there are enjoying a surge in demand as European countries look for alternatives to Ukrainian chicken.
