Ukrainian forces are continuing to hold their ground in the southeast port city of Mariupol. Now, they say the Russians are trying to bomb the city into surrender.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Oleksandr Motuzyanyk said the Russian occupiers continue to carry out airstrikes, and land forces are trying to capture the port. He said the Russians have deployed additional troop divisions but still have not been able to take control of the city.

Ukrainian fighters are making their stand inside a large steel-making compound. Motuzyanyk denied claims that Russian troops have taken over the area.

Russian forces have also been stepping up attacks on the capital, Kyiv. Officials in Moscow say a missile strike took out a facility for making anti-aircraft systems. They say the strikes are a response to attacks on Russian territory.

Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said air defense systems near Chernihiv shot down a Ukrainian helicopter which attacked residents of the peaceful village of Klimovo in the Bryansk region. He said seven people were injured in the attack.

However, Ukrainian officials deny the accusation.

Russian and Ukrainian officials have told conflicting stories of how the Russian warship Moskva sank in the Black Sea. The Russians say it sank after ammunition caught fire during a storm, while the Ukrainians contend that their missiles caused serious damage. Now, US analysts say they believe Ukrainian forces are responsible.

A defense department official told NHK that it appears two Neptune anti-ship missiles hit the cruiser, which was the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

Other US officials say the sinking will have a symbolic impact. However, it is unlikely to have a major influence on the fighting, as Russia's navy has played only a minor role in the invasion.

A university in a prefecture north of Tokyo is planning to accept Ukrainian students and researchers whose works have been interrupted by the Russian invasion.

It was announced at a news conference on Friday that Gunma University will provide a place to stay while they resume their academic activities there.

The university will make use of national and local assistance to help students and researchers get established in Japan. It is also seeking donations from the public.

The university will put up a notice on the website and Facebook page of the Ukrainian embassy in Japan to recruit applicants. It anticipates accepting several people.

The support period will run until the end of March next year but may be extended depending on the situation in Ukraine.

The university is also planning to work with the University of Warsaw in Poland, which is hosting many Ukrainian students who fled their country.

It plans to provide online lectures for them for free.

The President of Gunma University Ishizaki Yasuki said the institution wants to accept the maximum possible number as it is part of its responsibility as a national university in the international community.

North Korea's state media says mass celebrations took place on Friday to mark the 110th birthday of Kim Il Sung, the country's founder and the late grandfather of its current leader Kim Jong Un.

State-run Korean Central Television on Saturday morning aired footage of a national meeting and a public procession that took place in a square in central Pyongyang the day before with Kim Jong Un in attendance.

Ri Il Hwan, secretary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, addressed the rally and praised the achievements of Kim Jong Un.

Ri said the younger Kim inherited the economic and national defense building achievements of his grandfather and has made North Korea the most powerful country in the world despite hostile circumstances.

The rally was followed by a parade involving thousands of civilians, who held up placards with such slogans as "single-hearted unity" and "self-reliant recovery."

Kim Jong Un, who was watching the parade from a balcony dressed in civilian clothes, waved to the crowds and smiled.

The United States and South Korea are scheduled to start a joint military drill on Monday, which will most likely draw ire of Pyongyang. With the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People's Army approaching, South Korea and other countries are on high alert as they believe Pyongyang may conduct its seventh nuclear test.

A defendant in the trial over the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people has offered his first apology to victims in court.

32-year-old Salah Abdeslam is believed to be the sole survivor among the Islamic State militants who carried out the attacks. They stormed a concert hall, restaurants and other locations in and around the French capital.

Abdeslam is among 20 defendants charged with terrorism or conspiracy to commit the violence.

He told the court on Friday that the story of November 13 was ''written with the blood of the victims'' and he was part of it.

Abdeslam said he wished to express his condolences and offer an apology to all the victims. He shed tears, saying he would ask them for forgiveness.

His attitude contrasted with his provocative approach when his trial began in September. When the chief judge asked him his occupation, he said he was an Islamic State soldier.

A relative of one victim told local media that it is significant that the defendant asked for forgiveness and it needs to be considered.

But bereaved families and others on the victims' side expressed skepticism about his sincerity. One of their lawyers said the defendant shed tears just for his own sake.

In court on Wednesday, Abdeslam testified that he had planned to carry out a suicide bomb attack at a cafe in northern Paris. But he said he could not do so when he saw people enjoying themselves at the cafe.

The Japanese government will extend the dispatch of a liaison team to the southern prefecture of Okinawa beyond Saturday in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus infections there.

Okinawa is the only prefecture to have reported more than 600 new cases per 100,000 people in the past week. Its occupancy rate of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients is also rising.

As of Thursday, the percentage of people in Okinawa who had received their third vaccine shots stood at just 35 percent, well below the nationwide figure of 47 percent.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio decided an extended dispatch would help to better resolve local issues. He will also appoint an official in charge of vaccination to the liaison team.

The government believes the situation in Okinawa does not require quasi-emergency restrictions to be put in place immediately.

It plans to encourage vaccinations and expand testing in cooperation with local municipalities in a bid to avert a further rise in cases ahead of a string of spring holidays from late April to early May.
