An atomic bomb museum in Hiroshima has reset its clock showing the number of days that have passed since the last nuclear test took place. The move was taken to protest the two subcritical nuclear tests that the United States conducted last year.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in the western Japanese city reset the "peace clock" on Wednesday evening from 499 days to 209 days.

The US National Nuclear Security Administration told NHK on Wednesday that the tests were carried out at a test site in Nevada on June 22 and September 16. Subcritical tests do not produce nuclear explosions.

The earlier figure, 499 days, refers to the subcritical test the US carried out in November 2020.

The museum's director, Takigawa Takuo, told reporters on Thursday that it's very regrettable that the US carried out the subcritical tests when the world is concerned about the risks of using nuclear weapons.

He said the museum's mission is to let the world know the reality of atomic bombing. He said he hopes there will be no more nuclear tests.

Hiroshima suffered the world's first atomic bombing in 1945.

Myanmar is in a holiday period before the start of the new year on the local calendar next Sunday. But there is no much festivity in the air, as tensions grow between the military and armed pro-democracy groups.

Normally, the New Year holiday period is the happiest time of the year in Myanmar. People sing and dance on the streets and splash water on each other to wash away the unhappiness of the past year.

The military, who took power in a coup in February 2021, has been organizing New Year celebrations across the country. They have broadcast them on state-run media, in a campaign that aims to show normalcy has returned to the country.

Some citizens who have been protesting against military rule are calling on people not to take part in the events.

Armed pro-democracy groups have detonated explosives at some of the sites for New Year events being planned by the military. They have also attacked military facilities.

The streets of the country's largest city, Yangon, were mostly deserted on Thursday, with armed soldiers and police officers patrolling to maintain tight security.

A local human rights group says that as of Wednesday, a total of 1,750 people had been killed in military crackdowns since the coup on February 1 last year.

The United Nations says about 600,000 people have either fled Myanmar or been displaced within the country.

Singapore's governing party has picked Finance Minister Lawrence Wong as the leader of its fourth generation team, paving the way for him to become the next prime minister.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced the selection in a statement on Thursday.

The statement says an "overwhelming majority" of those consulted, including ministers, supported Wong as the leader of the 4G team of the People's Action Party. It says the views of Lee and the two Senior Ministers were not sought.

Lee's statement says the result was endorsed by all government MPs in a party caucus. It adds the decision on succession is "crucial" for Singapore because "it will ensure the continuity and stability of leadership."

Wong is now widely tipped to become Singapore's fourth prime minister in a general election to be held by 2025. The People's Action Party has ruled the country since its independence in 1965.

Wong has helped manage anti-coronavirus measures as a co-chair of the government's multi-ministry taskforce. He assumed the post of finance minister in May last year.
