KDDI mobile services include au, and its brands, UQ mobile and povo.

The company has issued an apology to users for the inconvenience. It says it does not know when services will resume.

The scorching temperatures that have gripped wide areas of Japan all week are set to continue on Saturday. Authorities are urging people to take precautions against heat stroke.

The Meteorological Agency says the mercury will likely reach 38 degrees in the cities of Kyoto and Maebashi, and 35 degrees in central Tokyo and Osaka.

The agency says the mercury on Friday topped 40 degrees in six locations across Gunma, Saitama, Gifu and other prefectures. Daytime highs of 38.4 degrees were seen in Osaka and Nagoya.

Some elderly people have died of suspected heatstroke, and the number of people admitted to hospital has surged.

Researchers say an area of southwestern Japan is one step closer to selection as the part of the world that best defines our current unit of geological time.

Beppu Bay in Oita Prefecture is one of 12 sites being considered as the Global Stratotype Section and Point for Anthropocene, the unofficial period when human activity started impacting the environment.

A key indicator of the period could be plutonium, which has been used as a mid-20th-century time-marker in various geological archives.

Researchers from the University of Tokyo and Ehime University say sedimentary records from Beppu Bay show a clear increase in the radioactive element from 1950. They say it peaked during the 1960s, and then declined after nuclear tests were restricted.

The group is led by Professor Yokoyama Yusuke of the University of Tokyo. He says he hopes assigning a specific location to Anthropocene will deepen discussions on how people and nature can coexist as the effects of climate change grow more severe.

North Korea has hit back at the Group of Seven nations following their condemnation of Pyongyang's repeated ballistic missile launches at a summit that ended on Tuesday.

The director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Department of International Organizations on Saturday issued a statement through the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

It came after G7 leaders said in a communique that they "strongly condemn" Pyongyang's "continued, unlawful testing of ballistic missiles." They demanded that the North "abandon its unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs."

The director-general called the G7 a small group of interests including the United States and Japan, and said North Korea has the right to protect its sovereignty from threats by the United States, which is the world's largest nuclear power and the destroyer of international peace and security.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has expressed confidence that historical issues with Japan can be resolved by working together for the two countries' future.

Yoon spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday as he returned home from Spain where he attended the NATO summit and other meetings. It was his first overseas trip as the country's president.

Referring to the relationship between South Korea and Japan, Yoon said historical issues and issues about the two countries' future should all be placed on one table and resolved together.

He said that if Tokyo and Seoul work together for the future, historical issues can be resolved.

Relations have soured over wartime labor and other issues.

Yoon noted that North Korea's nuclear and missile development, as well as the situation in Ukraine, were high on the NATO summit agenda.

He said NATO leaders indicated the need for hardline responses and ways to control tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Yoon said the most impressive event during his visit to Spain was a three-way summit with Japan and the United States that was held for the first time in about five years.

He said he agreed with Japanese and US leaders in principle that it would be desirable to resume trilateral military and security cooperation in order to respond to the North Korean nuclear issue.

The US Defense Department says it will provide 820 million dollars in additional security assistance for Ukraine.

Officials on Friday announced the military aid, which US President Joe Biden had revealed the previous day.

The aid package includes two National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems, known as NASAMS; ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS; four counter-artillery radar units; and up to 150,000 rounds of artillery ammunition.

CNN reports that the NASAMS system is the same one that protects Washington.

The Defense Department says the United States has now committed approximately 6.9 billion dollars in security assistance to Ukraine since the start of Russia's military invasion in late February.

The figure is larger than the 5.9 billion dollars of Ukraine's own military spending in 2021, estimated by Sweden's Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the additional US assistance in a video released on Friday.

He said the powerful NASAMS system will significantly strengthen Ukraine's air defenses. He added that his country is negotiating for other new weapons from its partners.

Meanwhile Zelenskyy said Russian missile strikes hit a nine-story residential building and a recreation center in the southern region of Odesa early on Friday, killing 21 people including a 12-year-old boy.

He denounced the attacks as "deliberate, purposeful Russian terror," and "not some mistakes or an accidental strike".

UNESCO has listed the Ukrainian culture of cooking borscht, a beetroot-based soup, as an intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.

Officials said on Friday that the dish is under threat due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. They fast-tracked the application process, which was initially scheduled for next year.

Borscht is cooked in all regions of Ukraine, but it is also consumed in Russia and other former Soviet states.

UNESCO says the listing does not imply exclusivity nor ownership of the heritage.
